Supernatural – 4×07 – “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester”
October 31st, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester,” originally broadcast October 30th, 2008.
After two standalone episodes, one I found enjoyable but flawed (“Monster Movie”) and one I thought was excellent (“Yellow Fever”), Supernatural gets back to the latest End of the World storyline. In other words, Sam and Dean are back on the job of stopping the 66 seals from being broken, which would lead to Lucifer rising from Hell and bringing with him a host of nasty demons and other baddies. And it’s Halloween, to boot, so horrible things are sure to happen.
Smallville – 8×06 – “Prey”

The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the episode, “Prey,” originally broadcast October 23rd, 2008.
There’s a serial killer on the loose in Metropolis, and Chloe’s new friend Davis has been having blackouts? Coincidence? He’s in the clear as far as Chloe is concerned. At least for the moment.
Smallville – 8×05 – “Committed”
October 29th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the episode, “Committed,” originally broadcast October 16th, 2008.
Did you ever watch an episode of Fox’s “The Moment of Truth?” Yeah, me neither. From what I gathered through the promos, people allowed themselves to be hooked up to lie detectors and asked an assortment of potentially embarrassing questions, all for… what? Fabulous prizes? Who knows. I wasn’t willing to watch to find out. Well, someone in Metropolis decides to play the home game, only the contestants are playing for his/her life and the life of his/her fiancee.

The DVD Dungeon 10.28.08
The barrage of horror titles continue in this last week before Halloween. Of special note are new releases for the 80’s slasher classic Pieces as well as Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond. Both have been released before, and while Fulci’s film had a respectable edition from Anchor Bay, Pieces has been mostly available in crappy versions that look to have been VHS transfers. Now both films get the special treatment, and while Pieces never looked so good, don’t pass up on this edition of The Beyond just because you own a previous version. This one has plenty of new extras, including a commentary track by star Catriona MacColl. Also of note for fans of cult films is the DVD debut (aside from cheap DVD-R copies floating about) of The Curse of Bigfoot. This notorious cheapie is well known for having taken years to complete, with new footage shot to accompany that which had sat around for many years. The end result is a hodge podge of 60’s and 70’s schlock concerning Bigfoot, ancient North American mummies and monster make-up straight out of a sixth grade production of King Kong. Don’t miss it! As for TV offerings, there is not a whole lot, but this week does seem to be the week of complete series sets. Both The 4400 and Millenium get this treatment. Also, for the Misties out there, don’t forget about the 20th anniversary limited edition tin box set. Jeez, has it been twenty years already?!
Heroes – 3×07 – “Eris Quod Sum”
October 28th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Heroes through the current episode, “Eris Quod Sum,” originally broadcast October 27th, 2008.
According to the Internet the title to this episode, “Eris Quod Sum,” is Latin for “You will be that which I am” and is a maxim from Roman poet Horace. However, I have been unable to find any literary source for this quote. It seems that while the quote is often attributed to Horace, it may not be something he ever said and/or wrote. I did find one reference to a longer quotation, “es quod eram, et eris quod sum,” which can potentially be translated in Ye Olde Englishe as “For as I was, so now thow arte, and as I am, so shalte thow be.”
Fringe – 1×06 – “The Cure”
October 27th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Fringe through the current episode, “The Cure,” originally broadcast October 21, 2008.
Some of the things that’ve been simmering over the last few episodes aren’t revisited this week, but one important one that’s been neglected recently gets a big nudge, while Agent Dunham reaches a turning point in her relationship with Broyles.
Supernatural – 4×06 – “Yellow Fever”
October 26th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Yellow Fever,” originally broadcast October 23rd, 2008.
This was a tour de force episode for Jensen Ackles. From start to finish, this was his episode and he performed brilliantly. The monster of the week story was interesting but somewhat confusing. I could have done without the tired television contrivance of starting an episode with a brief scene and then flashing back to tell the rest of the story. Although it was hilarious seeing that the horrific beast Dean was running from was a tiny dog, would it have changed the episode at all to simply start at the beginning? No, not at all. And in my book, if there’s no good reason to set an episode as a flashback, it shouldn’t be done.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×04 – “Save Our Souls”
October 26th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Save Our Souls,” originally broadcast October 24th, 2008.
Although I realize we are only four episodes in, at the moment “Save Our Souls” is my favorite episode of Season Four. Everything came together to make a fantastic episode. If not for the one short scene with Eli, it may have been a perfect episode. For once, Melinda and Jim were on equal footing, in terms of both the number of scenes they were in and the amount of fact-finding they did. And to think, from the episode previews I thought it would be Speed 2: Cruise Control meets, well, Ghost Whisperer. But it was a little more than that.
