I’ve been watching The Twilight Zone on SCI FI Channel since 8AM this morning (there are some episodes I’ve seen upwards of five or six times — wow) and it seems as if every commercial break has at least one promotional spot for the return of Battlestar Galactica on January 16th, 2009.  Not to mention those annoying quarter-of-the-screen banners that run for a few seconds after a commercial ends.  If only there were more than two or three spots SCI FI was rotating.  I’ve seen each of them a dozen times and its getting annoying.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that this promotional push isn’t going to help Battlestar Galactica gain new viewers.  There are only two types of viewers tuning in to this marathon: 1) regular SCI FI Channel viewers who are already highly anticipating the return of Battlestar Galactica, and 2) fans of The Twilight Zone who are only watching the channel because of the marathon.  In other words, please, SCI FI, cut back on the Battlestar Galactica overdose!

Weekly Ratings Roundup
Week 14 of the 2008-2009 Television Season
Monday, December 22nd, 2008 – Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Broadcast Networks

It was a holiday week filled with specials and repeats and thus this will be another abbreviated edition of the Weekly Ratings Roundup. Just the numbers and a minimum of analysis.  A pair of Ghost Whisperer repeats on CBS performed well for the day after Christmas.  On December 25th, a repeat of Supernatural actually beat a repeat of Smallville.  Impressive?  Or were all the Smallville fans who would regularly watch a repeat out enjoying the holiday?  And if the preliminary numbers hold up, the most recent repeat of Jericho on The CW will have seen its audience increase over the previous episode.

Thoughts on Jericho – “Federal Response”

The fourth episode of Jericho was originally broadcast on October 18th, 2006. Power is suddenly restored to the town and a message from Homeland Security arrives through the telephone, on television and on the Internet telling everyone to stay put.  Unfortunately, a power surge causes fires throughout town.

We apologize for the delay in posting this latest entry in the Lost Season Four rewatch, which is now up to date after rewatching the fifth and sixth episodes of the season. Enough good things cannot be said about “The Constant,” which may well be the single best episode of Lost to date.

How I Got These Scars No. 11

December 24th, 2008

In an economy that has steadily worsened not only over the past year but for the last few if not indeed the duration of the present millennium, sustaining an interest like reading comic books on a miniscule budget seems like a financial death wish. On a basic level, you can look at the anticipation for next March’s Watchmen and the incredible success of this summer’s Iron Man and The Dark Knight for the beginnings of an explanation. While superheroes don’t often get a lot of respect, what they lack in personal relations they make up for in their ability to transcend circumstances. There was that one guy in London a few years back, but you just don’t see costumed adventurers in real life, and in an age that has systematically whittled down larger-than-life personas so that they’re more often the source of ridicule than awe, good causes as stunts or mistakes, heroes fabricated or believed in more for what they represent than what they may actually be, it just seems harder to justify what has often been dismissed as geek fandom.

The thing is, I got past all that, throughout the whole year. This will be my second annual QB 50 (the reason most of the titles will have a previous ranking number), the third time I’ve ranked my ten favorite comics of the year, and now more than ever it feels relevant, the achievements worth honoring, the creators worth lauding. It’s a tall order, calling my own awards, transporting them from one website to another, but one I feel is necessary. Sit back. This is going to be a long one. This is what 2008 was like for me.

(I was going to wait until Friday to post this, but being impatient and thinking of giving my readers this particular column as a Christmas gift, here we go.)

Lost Rewatch Delay

December 23rd, 2008

This past Sunday (December 21st) was supposed to be the day when our Lost Season Four rewatch covered episodes 4×05 and 4×06 (“The Constant” and “The Other Woman”).  Unfortunately, we’ve had to delay rewatching those episodes and will try to catch up before this coming Sunday (December 28th) when “Ji Yeon” and “Meet Kevin Johnson” are on deck.

The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Ball and Chain,” originally broadcast December 19th, 2008.

After taking a week off, Ghost Whisperer returns with a superb episode. And not just because I’m a fan of Rena Sofer (the actress who played the Ghost of the Week in this episode) or because I felt the last new episode, “Pieces of You,” was disappointing. No, “Ball and Chain” was just an excellent episode. Unlike “Pieces of You,” Jim/Sam had only a minor role in this episode, appearing in only three scenes. Although I don’t abhor this latest twist Ghost Whisperer has taken, I think “Ball and Chain” was a stronger episode because it only touched upon the Jim/Sam storyline.

Thoughts on Jericho – “Walls of Jericho”

The fourth episode of Jericho was originally broadcast on October 11th, 2006. A man named Victor is found in town, sick from radiation poisoning and warning that “they” are coming.  Meanwhile, gasoline for the generators keeping the clinic open and the bar’s satellite TV operating is running low.
