Thoughts on Jericho – “Fallout”
The second episode of Jericho was originally broadcast on September 27th, 2006. It dealt with the town of Jericho dealing with the impending arrival of radioactive fallout from the nuclear strike in Denver. Here are our thoughts:
- That radioactive fallout looked like one mean mother of a cloud. But if there hadn’t just been a nuclear blast, how many of us would have recognized it as a deadly incoming toxic mass? And how many of our towns would be able to organize sheltering some 5,000 people in roughly two hours?
- Robert Hawkins (Lennie James) continues to know just a little too much about everything. At least this time folks seem less impressed and more stunned at the depth of his knowledge. To be fair, Eric Green (Kenneth Mitchell) gives him a run for his money with that lengthy and presumably accurate description of death from radiation poisoning.
- And to show that it isn’t just the men in Jericho who know a thing or two, both Heather Lisinski (Sprague Grayden) and Emily Sullivan (Ashley Scott) prove they’re not to be underestimated. Heather knew more about fixing the generator in the hospital’s fallout shelter than anyone, but she was brushed off. And Emily formulated a wonderful plan on the fly to escape from the fake police officers.
- Why exactly did Hawkins lie about not being able to fix the radio? And who was on the other end broadcasting to him? One of his partners in undercover spydom, perhaps?
- Which teenager was more annoying: Dale Turner (Erik Knudsen) or Skylar Stevens (Candace Bailey)?
And discuss amongst yourselves.

Thanks, again, for more Jericho talk.
So, one of the reasons they found it easy enough to find shelter for that many people was probably because the vast majority of houses in Kansas have storm shelters. Those people who did just stayed in their own homes. Those that didn't or those that were too scared to stay by themselves are the ones that needed shelter.
Again, Hawkins is very well trained. It's not known by episode 2, but his background is pretty intense. And Eric's description of radiation poisoning was have been enough to convince me to get the heck out of dodge, or underground as it was.
Heather Lisinski rocks, doesn't she? First the “this is how you know your left from your right” stuff, now “get out of my way and let me fix the ventilation system”. And Emily proves blonde is NOT synonymous with dumb. She's a pretty smart cookie (except for the glaring fact that she gave up Jake for Roger).
Hawkins, at this stage, is trying to figure out who is responsible for everything. He definitely has a trust no one attitude, and who could blame him?
I don't know which teen was more annoying, just that they both were. I am leaning more toward Dale, though.

Hawkins is one of my favorite character. The Morse code he was receiving was a partial list of the 21 NUKED cities.
One of the things I like about Jericho is the little insights and spoilers that are done in Morse code

Does anyone else think Hawkins knew exactly which frequency to tune to in order to get the latest information? Or was he truly fixing the radio in the hope that someone would be broadcasting something helpful and he just had fantastic luck…
