Heroes – 3×12 – “Our Father”
December 9th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Heroes through the current episode, “Our Father” originally broadcast December 8th, 2008.
The penultimate episode of Volume Three: Villains, “Our Father” finally got around to moving the story forward, somewhat, and I was left actually anticipating next week’s episode. It will conclude Volume Three and be the last new episode until February of 2009. Still, at this late date, there wasn’t much “Our Father” could do to halt the meandering way Heroes has played out during the past few months. After getting off to a strong start, Volume Three almost immediately lost its way. The best I can hope for now is an adequate wrap up and a shocking cliffhanger (one that doesn’t involve time travel in any way, shape or form) teasing Volume Four: Fugitives.

Legend of the Seeker – 1×07 – “Identity”
December 9th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Identity,” originally broadcast the weekend of December 6th, 2008.
This was the last new episode of Legend of the Seeker until January 10th, 2009 and unfortunately the series went out on a low note. “Identity” was a disappointing, cliche-ridden episode that did little to further the plot of the series or the individual stories of any of the characters. It seems as if every action-adventure show has to have an episode like this in which the main character’s body is switched with someone else. None of his close friends notice and he is trapped in the other body in some sort of terrible situation.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×09 – “Pieces of You”
December 8th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Pieces of You,” originally broadcast December 5th, 2008.
After taking a week off, Ghost Whisperer returned with an episode I found mediocre. “Pieces of You” was the first standalone episode following the trio of episodes (“Imaginary Friends & Enemies,” “Threshold” and “Heart & Soul,” broadcast November 7th through November 21st, 2008) that drastically altered the framework of the series. Unfortunately, “Pieces of You” fell flat compared to those (surprisingly) strong episodes.

Lost Season Four Rewatch: The Beginning of the End, Confirmed Dead
December 7th, 2008
Here at Lower Decks we’ve decided to start a Lost Season Four Rewatch in anticipation of the premiere of Season Five in January of 2009. There were fourteen episodes in Season Four and if two episodes are viewed every Sunday starting today (December 7th), the entire season can be seen just in time for the fifth season premiere.
Captain America #44
December 6th, 2008
This review contains spoilers for Marvel’s Captain America through the latest issue (#44), originally published November 26th, 2008 with a cover date of January 2009.
My copy of Captain America #44 finally arrived. For reasons even I don’t fully understand, I continue to subscribe to Captain America through Marvel Comics. Only a few days ago I renewed my subscription for another year. I suppose it is just easier to pay a yearly amount (and save a good chunk of change over the cover price) and not have to worry about missing an issue. Still, delays and the occasional damaged comic have made me think about switching to another avenue. But that is neither here nor there.
Forrest J Ackerman Dies at 92
December 5th, 2008
You may not recognize his name but you’ll certainly recognize the term Forrest J Ackerman created in 1954: sci-fi. Ackerman, who edited Famous Monsters of Filmland and whose collection of science fiction, fantasy and horror memorabilia once numbered 300,000 items, died yesterday at the age of 92. He was born in 1916, spoke fluent Esperanto, created Vampirella, and once signed 10,000 autographs over the course of three days. A full obituary can be found at the Los Angeles Times.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – 2×11 – “Self Made Man”
December 4th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles through the current episode, “Self Made Man,” originally broadcast December 1, 2008.
Let’s not beat around the bush: this episode of Terminator was a filler episode. It’s an episode that stands completely alone, not acknowledging main storylines or issues. Half the characters are not present, and there isn’t much effort to tie itself to the main storyline. Filler episodes are normal fare these days because television shows can’t be full throttle for an entire season. If John was narrowly escaping death every day, he’d be even crazier than he is now.
So the test of a filler episode cannot be its relevance to the show as a whole, and this episode would fail that test. Other than some minor characterization of Cameron, it doesn’t seem to figure into the main plot. The test of a filler episode is simple entertainment value. And, so, did “Self Made Man” pass the test?
