The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “After School Special,” originally broadcast January 29th, 2009.

I don’t often get the chance to watch Supernatural “live” as they say. It’s on against The Office and 30 Rock on NBC and those are two shows I hate to miss. But last night (Thursday, January 29th, 2009) both The Office and 30 Rock were repeats while Supernatural was new. So I got to watch Supernatural in its natural habitat (9:00PM Eastern).

I was having problems with my Internet connection so I also got to sit on the couch and concentrate all my attention on Supernatural rather than multitasking. Perhaps that’s why I found myself enjoying this episode so much. Because after having some time to think I realized that “After School Special” really wasn’t a great episode.

How I Got These Scars No. 16

January 30th, 2009

In the same way some people will follow certain authors from book to book, there are directors whose new work will always intrigue me, who consistently make insightful and entertaining films. Because this is a site focused primarily on genre interests, I won’t often get to write about such names as Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Ron Howard, Frank Darabont, Richard Donner, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, Cameron Crowe, Sofia Coppola, Anthony Minghella, Woody Allen, Spike Lee, Bryan Singer, Joel Schumacher, Terry Gilliam, or James Cameron. Some of them have spent a fair amount of time engaged in movies that would be pertinent around here, and some I have followed or experienced only in increments, but some, I would gladly devote, if forced to, my life to watching. Most of them have made a favorable, lasting impression on our culture, and need no introduction or explanation. Today I’ll be talking about one more name, who for a time was an unquestioned member of the generally prestigious gathering listed above. Today, he might as well rename himself Rodney Dangerfield. But his name’s M. Night Shyamalan.

The following review contains spoilers for LOST through the current episode, “Jughead” originally broadcast January 28th, 2009.

One of the great debates in the LOST community is whether or not the whole show was planned from the beginning.  The producers claim that they knew exactly where they were going from the Pilot, and they’ve said they’ve left clues to the Endgame throughout the first season.  And whether you believe that or you think they’re making it all up, you have to agree with me on one point.

It sure is fun to see the puzzle come together.

This review contains spoilers through the episode “The No-Brainer,” originally broadcast 1/27/08.

In case it wasn’t apparent in previous reviews, I’m aware (perhaps now moreso than before) that not everyone shares my exact enthusiasm for this show. I guess it’s a good thing that I volunteered to review it! I don’t know how a skeptic would write about it episode to episode. For me, anyway, this was another good one, maybe a little light on the fringe mystery, but an excellent episode for fans of the characters, and it should be made clear that as a fan of a series, I must be a fan of the characters as well. It’s my first and most important criteria, and Fringe passed that hurdle probably in the second episode. Don’t believe me? Go back and read my review for the first episode. I’ll wait.

The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Sacrifice” originally broadcast the weekend of January 24th, 2009.

The news that Legend of the Seeker has been renewed for a second season didn’t exactly surprise me.  I wouldn’t have been surprised had it been cancelled either, though.  The good news is that after two terrible episodes back-to-back, this past weekend’s episode was actually quite good.  “Sacrifice” saw the return of the Mord’Sith (first seen in “Deena”), although technically it wasn’t a real Mord’Sith at all.  Read on to learn more.

Syndicated action-adventure series Legend of the Seeker has been renewed for a second season, according to TV Week.  So far, only Tribune Broadcasting’s television stations have cleared the series for the 2009-2010 season but more stations will add the series before long.  From the article:

“‘Legend of the Seeker,’ the No. 1 new first-run syndicated show of the 2008-09 season, has proven to be a great fit for our Tribune launch group,” Janice Marinelli, president of Disney-ABC Domestic Television, said in a statement.

“We’re enormously pleased with their confidence in this exciting new scripted hour and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership with them into ‘Seeker’s’ second season,” she said.

“We are thrilled with Disney’s commitment to this production,” Sean Compton, senior vice president of programming at Tribune Broadcasting, said in a statement.

The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Body of Water,” originally broadcast January 23rd, 2009.

I’m conflicted about how I feel about this episode. Judging from the few promos I saw for it (as a general rule I try not to watch promos but sometimes a few slip through), “Body of Water” was supposed to be a very big episode, one that answered a lot of questions. I suppose in a way it did answer a few questions, although it also raised quite a few of its own, but I just don’t feel it was an exceptional episode of Ghost Whisperer.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Criss Angel Is a Douche Bag,” originally broadcast January 22nd, 2009.

When I finished watching this episode I was left wondering what Criss Angel being a douche bag has to do with anything. I know who Criss Angel is and the word douche bag was certainly thrown around quite a bit in the episode, but I don’t get the connection between the two. Did Criss Angel do something to the author or authors of the episode? Did he somehow slight the producers of Supernatural? Or is the title of this episode a joke to be enjoyed by those in the know? I’m sure I could find the answer myself on the Internet, but where’s the fun in that?

How I Got These Scars No. 15

January 23rd, 2009

In a few short months now, assuming Fox doesn’t actually screw it up, Zack Snyder unveils his movie adaptation of the most famous graphic novel in comic book history. While I’m sure I’ll have plenty to say about the film once it’s released, for now we’ve got just the original story to talk about. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ masterwork has been hailed among the best pieces of literature from the past century, having in its lasting impact escaped the usual limits of its medium, which set a standard by which every new comic book must be judged.
