How I Got These Scars No. 20

February 27th, 2009

Everyone’s got their own personal mythology, made up of any number of things, little aspects of their past they keep that maybe they don’t understand but makes sense to keep around. One of mine is that I happen to have gone to Stephen King’s high school (had the English teacher who told him he couldn’t write) and then to his college. It wasn’t actually that big a deal, just a part of those experiences I was aware of, didn’t quite seek (certainly not the high school, for obvious reasons), but was pleased to know. Trouble was, I wasn’t much of a Stephen King fan in those days. Even in college, I read only the one book, ‘The Gunslinger.’ It wasn’t until ‘Faithful,’ his chronicle of the 2004 Red Sox season written with Stewart O’Nan that I began to feel anything of a real kinship with this spectre of my early life, and it wasn’t until ‘Lost’ that I even considered picking up ‘The Stand.’

The following review contains spoilers for LOST through the current episode, “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” originally broadcast February 25th, 2009.

I’m obviously a huge fan of LOST, and I’ve watched every episode of the series (including every one from this season) at least twice.  I know the characters inside and out; from the flashbacks to the flash-forwards.  So when I tell you that “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” might be the best episode of the entire series, I hope you take my word for it.

The following review contains spoilers for Heroes through the current episode, “Cold Wars” originally broadcast February 23rd, 2009.

Hot on the heels of “Building 26,” which wasn’t a complete waste of an episode, comes “Cold Wars” and its focus on Noah Bennett, one of Heroes most compelling characters. The bulk of the episode — the portions that focused on Noah — was exciting. Unfortunately, judging from what was revealed in this episode it looks like the rest of Volume Four: Fugitives will be little more than a retread of previous seasons.

Both The Hollywood Reporter and TV Week are reporting that The CW has renewed six shows through the 2009-2010 season, including its Thursday duo of Smallville (for a ninth season) and Supernatural (for a fifth season). No word yet on the fate of Reaper, which returns for its second season on March 3rd.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that two of Smallville’s current “showrunners,” Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin, may leave the series if The CW’s pilot for Melrose Place is picked up. Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson would remain to guide Smallville through its ninth season. The show’s creators, Al Gough and Miles Millar, left after Season Seven.

Do you think Smallville and Supernatural should each return for another season? Sound off in the comments.

The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Home” originally broadcast the weekend of February 21st, 2009.

The first new episode of Legend of the Seeker in several weeks wasn’t much of an episode.  It was, like Star Trek: The Next Generation’s much maligned “Shades of Gray,” a clip show.  There’s never a real need for a clip show but to show one halfway through a show’s first season?  That’s unnecessary.  And to make it the first episode after a three week hiatus?  That’s just cruel.  The framing device used to introduce the clips was weak but at least it was connected to one of the continuing plot lines of the series.

The following review contains spoilers for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles through the current episode, “Desert Cantos,” originally broadcast February 20, 2009.

One of the reasons that Terminator might be in trouble is because it isn’t what people think it is.  I’m sure a lot of people, myself included, thought that the show would emulate the movies.  Every week, the Connors would be running from some kind of metal monster, and the hour would be full of bullets and explosions.  Instead, the show is full of a lot more heart than you’d think, and there’s a heck of a lot of continuity.  “Desert Cantos” is exactly what I’m talking about.

How I Got These Scars No. 19

February 20th, 2009

As someone who has spent a great deal of the past four years reading comic books, and writing about them, 2009 is turning into a brand new day. Sorry, comic book reference. Suffice it to say, my comics experience is changing once again, and I cannot think of a better way for it to happen than to have Grant Morrison there with his cosmic concept of ‘Final Crisis.’

LOST – 5×06 – “316”

February 18th, 2009

The following review contains spoilers for LOST through the current episode, “316” originally broadcast February 18th, 2009.

They did it again.  It doesn’t seem to matter how many times they do it, and it doesn’t seem to matter that they’re doing it more and more often in the past couple of seasons.  No matter how many times it happens, it never ceases to amaze me.  And whether I believe it or not, I write this review of another LOST episode completely and utterly impressed.

The following review contains spoilers for Heroes through the current episode, “Building 26″ originally broadcast February 16th, 2009.

After two very disappointing episodes, “Building 26,” third episode of Volume Four: Fugitives, finally displays some promise. There are still plenty of things to complain about (Hiro, for example) but for once there are also a few things to praise. Paradoxically, very little actually happened in this episode aside from additional set up for later episodes. It’s hard to reconcile that with the feeling I had after the episode ended: cautious optimism.

The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Greek Tragedy,” originally broadcast February 13th, 2009.

After last week’s episode finally brought Melinda and Jim/Sam together, “Greek Tragedy” appeared to push them apart. As romantically frustrating as that may be, with at least seven episodes left in the season it was premature to assume that everything would work out perfectly. As for the Ghost of the Week, I liked it. And unlike last week’s episode I didn’t see the ending coming until Melinda did.
