The following review contains spoilers for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles through the current episode, “The Good Wound,” originally broadcast February 13, 2009.

Terminator is back after a long hiatus, and they’ve decided to give us a bit of a risky return.  While it seems to be much more of a setup of the rest of the season than anything else, it can also be considered one of the most daring episodes of the series so far.

Dollhouse a Disappointment

February 14th, 2009

The following review contains spoilers for the premiere of Dollhouse, originally broadcast February 13th, 2009.

I won’t be reviewing Dollhouse on a regular basis.  I’m not even sure I’ll be watching again next week.  But I will discuss the premiere episode, shown last night on FOX.  The short version: It wasn’t very good.  The long version:  It wasn’t very good and I don’t think it will be getting any better.  What was supposed to be the debut of a “high concept” drama felt more like an overworked cliche filled with familiar story lines and wooden characters.

How I Got These Scars No. 18

February 14th, 2009

When Pocket Books released ‘Star Trek 101’ last fall, I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that it didn’t receive the kind of wide release a new Star Wars guide does. After all, Star Trek hasn’t enjoyed the kind of widespread interest that Star Wars has in more than a decade. When the last update of the ‘Star Trek Encyclopedia’ was published, ‘Deep Space Nine’ had just ended and ‘Voyager’ still had two seasons to go, ‘Enterprise’ hadn’t been conceived yet, and ‘Nemesis’ had not yet concluded Picard’s adventures on the silver screen. ‘101’ represents that rare entity that acknowledges today the complete experience in the filmed Star Trek canon. For a great many years now, “canon” has been a dirty word.

Fringe 1×14 “Ability” review

February 14th, 2009

The following review contains spoilers through the episode “Ability,” originally broadcast 2/10/09.

As a fan of the series, it’s quite gratifying to see new episodes build on the strengths of what’s come before, not just push the show along but actively make it better and better each week. I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but “Ability” pushes the game that much further, another milestone and once again an essential episode, and perhaps, the most important episode to date, and it’s the one which will hopefully confirm for those viewers who’ve been wondering if they’re really fans, or whether, finally, this is a course they will not pursue.

The following review contains spoilers for LOST through the current episode, “This Place Is Death” originally broadcast February 11th, 2009.

Death.  Life.  New faces.  Old faces.  Connections made from season one to season five.  Brand new revelations.  Groups coming together and falling apart.  Destiny avoided and destiny confirmed.  “This Place Is Death” had everything you could want in an episode of LOST, and it made the episode one of my favorites of all time.

The following review contains spoilers for Heroes through the current episode, “Trust and Blood” originally broadcast February 9th, 2009.

There were times during this episode when I found myself questioning why I continue watching Heroes. Every time it looks like the show is going to turn a corner and stop disappointing it goes and disappoints in all new ways. At the end of last week’s episode (“A Clear and Present Danger,” the Volume Four opener), Nathan has rounded up and perhaps a dozen people with abilities, including his own brother (Peter) and daughter (Claire). In “Trust and Blood,” Nathan is forced to deal with the fallout that occurs when a plane filled with these “heroes” crashes.

Smallville – 8×14 – Requiem

February 10th, 2009

The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the current episode, “Requiem,” originally broadcast February 6th, 2009.

Well, what do you know? “Requiem” ended up being a fairly strong episode. For reasons that have nothing to do with Smallville, and everything to do with the name, “Requiem,” I wasn’t hopeful. Still, we seemingly wrapped up a few loose ends and managed take a few steps for our characters. Steps that shouldn’t, in theory, be retractable. Read the rest of this entry »

The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Slow Burn,” originally broadcast February 6th, 2009.

This was a solid episode, one that I very much enjoyed despite figuring out how it was going to end after about twenty minutes. The Ghost of the Week was played by Gretchen Egolf. You might remember her from NBC’s Journeyman; she played Katie Vassar, the wife of Dan Vasser (played by Kevin McKidd), a man who suddenly finds himself traveling back in time. Ah, that was a great show. I still miss it.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Sex and Violence,” originally broadcast February 5th, 2009.

For an episode involving exotic dancers, a hot doctor and a twist I didn’t see coming, “Sex and Violence” was ultimately a disappointment due to a trite ending. Up until the final few minutes it was actually great episode with an intriguing Monster of the Week. I was even able to forget that it had almost nothing to do with the 66 Seals. There was a minor subplot involving Dean’s suspicions of Sam but it never went anywhere.
