More than a month before Star Trek (2009) hits theaters, Paramount Pictures has already ordered a sequel, according to Variety.com. Returning will be producer J.J. Abrams (who also directed Star Trek (2009), writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and co-producers Damon Lindelof (who will help write the sequel) and Bryan Burk. From the Variety.com article:

“There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet,” said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC’s “Lost” who produced the upcoming “Trek” but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman’s screenplay. “But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”

As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” he said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”

In the unlikely event that the new Star Trek movie is a flop, how embarrassing will it be for Paramount, Abrahams and all involved if the sequel winds up being scrapped?

I just saw the film last night! I have been a trekkie fan since the 60′s and was VERY pleased with what was on the screen at the theaters.
Both of us who went, and my other half is in the video industry.. very critical viewer, left saying that there better be a sequel. In fact we thought that this could be the beginning of a new era of Trekkie films. I wouldn’t mind, so long as the writing stays top notch, going to new Star Trek films into my old age.

I loved the movie saw it yesterday and it was great to see a new movie with a cast that had the same chemistry as the old cast did, and it worked real well with this new movie. I hope they also get the same cast to sign back as the crew of the Enterprise.

As some one who grew up with Star Trek being my Barny, I have to say, that CAPS LOCK would not fully express my fangirlish joy. I absolutely was slightly worried that this movie would be a compleat and total flop but is blew me away. I loved how the redefined the heros of the Enterprise while sticking true to the cannon plot as much as they could. I can not wait to see a sequle!

I loved the movie, i like how by the time line being changed, which is one of the prime directives , it changes the hole history as we know it, seeing how vulcan is gone who will keep the peace in teh galaxy now. In this new reality, kirk of the future might not be dead, he may never meet soren and die with picard. There are lots of possibilities for this new star trek.

Hate to the party pooper but I for one was disappointed. The acting and story line were very weak. Special effects were the only redeeming factor. A critical factor in the success and love of the good Trek productions is that special effects are secondary, in support of the acting and story instead of vise-versa. It bothered me a lot that the movie ended with the time line disrupted — Kirk getting a medal while Spock’s home was left destroyed is not right. Closure would have been accomplished and the story line improved had the Enterprise crew pulled off some heroic effort in the last 10 minutes by going forward in time and fixing everything before it started, therefore putting the time line back as it should have been. Perhaps that’s what the sequel will be about. If so, it smacks of the “Search for Spock” sequel — been there, done that.

I watched the movie twice. It’s so amazing. this new movie is the remedy of the previous star trek movies which I think quite boring. I never thought that I would fall in love with Star Trek but I did..!!!! NOt only sequel, I wish they also considering to make the series with the same upbringing character and outline story.

  7. Fredrik Söderblom Says:

I have to agree with Larry. Special effects should come 2nd in star trek in favour of the characters and story. Too much was changed in this movie, the effects, the ending, I mean FOR GOD’S SAKE, the enterprise had like SEVEN warp cores, now I’m not an expert on the original series but as far as I know, star trek ships only have ONE warp core. ONE big one.

Nevertheless, it was an alright movie, but one thing is for certain, if the sequal doesn’t change back the timeline as it should be, Star Trek will have died, all thanks to J.J. Abrams. SO, if the sequel doesn’t fix the storyline, I’ll never call this Star Trek, I’ll call it FAKE TREK.

  8. Jim Says:

WOW! What a great movie! All those trek nerds think they own the franchise. I have to say that JJ Abrams should not listen to them. Get out of your moms basements! This was a fresh reboot to a tired old series too set in its ways. The series needed to be shaken up a bit. I can’t wait for the next installment. And for all those trekkies who hate the new movie – save some money from your job at GAMESTOP, Hollywood Video and Coffee shop jobs and go GET LAID! MWAHAHAHAH

Jim, that last sentence was out of line. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions.

  10. Anthony Green Says:

I liked the movie very much I grew up with Star Trek and if nothing I have learned that all out comes can end differently as did the 2009 version, great special effects the layout of the engineering sections of the starships being the only gripe as in all Star Trek ships prior to this movie remained true to Gene’s dream of continous progression of his ongoing vision for Star Trek, the starships did not do this unfortunately otherwise it would have exceeded his expectations for his Star Trek, lets not forget who’s idea Star Trek was and should remain but good effort never the less.

I thought this movie was great, the story the acting, and the special effects all came together in a tri-fecta of movie brilliance. As far as the storyline conflictions, like 7 warp cores, a white bridge instead of the iconic orange bridge, vulcan being destroyed, you have to as Doc. Brown put it “think fourth dimensionally” nero went back in time and showed up 15 minutes before J.T. Kirk was even born. Because of this the time line skewed into a tangent making it possible for anything to happen, because we are viewing the storyline in a completely different universe, in which an infinite number of possibilities and outcomes exist. The engineer who designed the propulsion system for the enterprise may have decided seven cores instead of one would be better, from a redudnancy standpoint it’s sound engineering. The designer who chose the color scheme for the bridge may have decided that chevy racing orange was more suited for the water pipes in main engineering than the walls of the bridge, and i think he was right. Star Trek has always had some really imaginative and deep storylines, that is why I love it and I think thats why it has been around for 44 years. So just because the prequel does not appear to add up to the sum of the rest of the star trek lore dont knock the movie, just give Mr. Abrams and his writers a chance to finish there take on the storyline, I am sure it will all add up in the end.

the first was awsome, but i hope that by making a sequel they dont just mess it up, or just make it a repeat of the first one. its going to be hard for them to develope a whole new idea without totally ruining the star trek feeling and eccense that they created…ive seen this happen before with movies, the first one is so good and makes so much money that they want to do another…and then the second one isnt nearly as good, either because it was too similar or to different[i honestly dont understand why the movie makers cant find a balance], and it flops

just look at the second “transformers” or the “narnia movies”. pure insults to the first ones.

take my advice, movie maker people, although it is very unlikely that you will read this

    and listen
