TVGuide.com is reporting that NBC will only order 18 to 20 episodes of Heroes during the 2009-2010 season (its fourth).  According to the article: “The show’s writers have already started planning for the show’s fifth volume, which will involve a series of mysterious deaths. Or could they be murders?”

Heroes
“I Am Sylar”
Originally Broadcast April 20th, 2009

With only one episode left before Season Three of Heroes draws to a close I’m ready to call it: this wasn’t the tour de force, return to grace that the producers, the network and (especially) the fans had hoped for. Maybe Season One was just a fluke, a perfect storm of characters, actors, writing and special effects. Season Two, cut short by the Writers Strike, was a disappointment and frankly I was sure Season Three would be a vast improvement.

I wasn’t wrong but I wasn’t totally right.

Fringe
“Bad Dreams”
Originally broadcast 4/21/09

The season arc heats up again when Agent Dunham starts having dreams that’s she’s killing people, only the truth is far more complicated, and disturbing, than that. Coming off two episodes that took a break from the arc, we’re reminded of the events that took place in “Ability” in the kind of way that affirms the creative approach of the series.

It’s new comic book day! Dozens of new books will be hitting the racks today. Head over to Previews to see the list of new comics and then hit the comments to share which books are on your pull list this week.

I don’t have a routine for reading my comics. Whenever I get a new shipment from DCBS or the latest issue of Fantastic Four or Captain America from my subscription with Marvel, I stack the books on a shelf on the nightstand next to my bed. There’s no discernible order, although if I’m really behind I might organize the stack by title. Often, the stack will sit on its shelf for days before I touch it. It’s not that I don’t want to read the books (I did, after all, go to the effort and expensive of ordering them) it’s just that I don’t have the time.

HYGOTS No. 27

April 17th, 2009

After Majel Barrett Roddenberry resurrected ‘Earth: Final Conflict’ from her husband’s files into a five-year television series, she had the opportunity to rescue another concept from the ashes. Described as a space adventure featuring a sentient ship, ‘Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda’ would run from 2000 to 2005 to about the same amount of success as its predecessor, and never quite attain the level of devotion as contemporary sci-fi programming, much less Gene’s greatest creation, Star Trek. Still, it would become one of my favorite genre experiences, despite the number of changes it would endure through the years. Long-criticized as another vehicle for ‘Hercules’ star Kevin Sorbo and losing all fan cred after popular show runner Robert Hewitt Wolfe departed during the second season, ‘Andromeda’ was always more than the sum of its parts, but those parts alone were some of the most brilliantly-conceived during that era.

LOST
“Some Like It Hoth”
Originally Broadcast Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Miles Straume came onto the LOST scene 30 episodes ago, but he’s never really been given the spotlight.  The producers have teased us with his “ghost whisperer” ability, but they’ve never really taken the time to explain it to us.  But, finally, almost two full seasons later, Miles finally gets his own stage in an episode that seems to set us up for the final charge of the year.
