Fringe
“Unleashed”
Originally broadcast 4/14/09

The second episode since the two-month break and dramatic events of “Ability” sees not a stitch more of the series arc play out, but a few subtle character plots are moved along while Charlie Francis receives a bit more of the spotlight than he’d probably prefer. There are four more episodes left to the season, ratings seem to have leveled out to that magic number of not great but not terrible, and I would actually be content if by some quirk of fate Fox doesn’t end up renewing the show for a second season. Doubtful, but ‘Fringe’ is so peculiar that I wonder how much of its appeal is lost on the majority of the people watching it. Given that, yes I would enjoy watching it for years to come, but this particular pattern suggests even a second season would almost certainly be its final one. Why fight the inevitable? Episodes like “Unleashed” are worth rallying around, but they are also the ones those fans won’t end up understanding at all.

Heroes
“1961″
Originally Broadcast Monday, April 13th, 2009

With only three episodes left in the season this is how Heroes chooses to use one of them? With a boring episode about family anguish and the horrible events of the past? I have to say, I was disappointed. “1961″ wasn’t much of an episode. There was a lot of talking and a lot of wind and not much else. On the plus side Sylar didn’t make an appearance.

When I placed my last order with Discount Comic Book Service I was a little shocked to find my total for the month come to $38.65. That was more than $10 more than any previous month and included 15 books. That’s only three more than the previous month and yet the total price jumped $11.24. Four or five of the books had cover prices of $3.99. That’s $15 to $20 before DCBS’s discounts. Although $38 isn’t all that much money it was more than I expected.

Ghost Whisperer
“Thrilled to Death”
Originally Broadcast Friday, April 10th, 2009

Ghost Whisperer returns after a month-long hiatus and this is the episode we get? A disappointing Ghost of the Week with special guest star Hillary Duff and almost nothing to do with the newly reborn relationship between Melinda and Jim? To make matters worse, this week’s episode (April 17th) is another repeat! In a way, with the season’s lengthy, shocking storyline more or less wrapped up, things are back to normal. This was a decidedly normal episode.

HYGOTS No. 26

April 11th, 2009

I’ve already written about it once (twice, if you count the QBs last December), but this week I’m returning to Grant Morrison’s ‘Final Crisis’ from DC Comics. As a dreaded “event book,” and especially as a Crisis, it had a lot to live up to, and naturally, fans were skeptical the whole way through. Last time (HYGOTS #19) I wrote about what made ‘Final Crisis’ a “final Crisis” (a culmination of multiverse stories that actually made the multiverse not only perfectly acceptable but useful). This time, I’m going to make the case that, as DC event books go, you could hardly have asked for a more effective use of real impact, concerning involvement from the two biggest heroes the company has to offer, Superman and Batman.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
“Born to Run”
Originally Broadcast Friday, April 10th, 2009

And there it was.  I write this review with a bit of a heavy heart because I know there is a (perhaps very good) chance that I have watched the last episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  Say what you want about ratings or expectations, movies or action…this became one of my favorite shows over the course of this season.  I agreed to review it because I was the most interested, but I fell in love.  And if that was the last episode of the series, I am really going to miss it.

Just a reminder that tonight at 8pm Eastern / 7pm Central, FOX will air the season (and maybe series) finale of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  There’s still a chance that strong ratings could save the show, so I’m hoping that everyone tunes in tonight!

The premiere of Harper’s Island is currently airing on CBS (on the East Coast). This is an open discussion. Feel free to post throughout the hour. Be forewarned that spoilers are likely. Hit the comments with your thoughts.

Harper’s Island, a limited-run television series, premieres on CBS at 10:00PM ET tonight (check your local listings). The network describes the show as follows:

HARPER’S ISLAND is a 13-episode murder mystery about a group of family and friends who travel to a secluded island for a destination wedding. They’ve come to laugh… to love… and, though they don’t know it… to die. As the wedding festivities begin, friendships are tested and secrets exposed as a murderer claims victims, one by one, transforming the wedding week of fun and celebration into a terrifying struggle for survival. Henry, the boy next door, is marrying the woman of his dreams, Trish Wellington, a beautiful and wealthy heiress. But as the wedding week begins, people start dying. Every episode, someone is killed. Wedding guests and island locals, every person is a suspect. No one is safe. No one can be trusted. By the end of the 13 episodes, all questions will be answered, the killer will be revealed and only a few will survive.

The thirteenth and final episode is set to air on June 2nd, 2009. The official CBS website for Harper’s Island can be found here. Lower Decks won’t be reviewing the series but we will be trying something new: open discussions for each episode posted at 10:00PM ET every Thursday.
