HYGOTS No. 33

May 29th, 2009

I’ve written about or mentioned Harry Potter in past columns, done reviews upon release on the last few books and films (yeah, that would be in prior incarnations of this site; in fact, when Lower Decks was first incorporated from the old Section 31 in 2002, that’s when I started doing so, which will help you with the timeline), and suggested the esteem I hold J.K. Rowling’s creation in, but it’s finally come time to devote my full attention to it. This year marks the ten-year anniversary of the release of ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ (as well as ‘Chamber of Secrets’) the book that marked my noticing of the emerging saga (I wouldn’t read it until the fall of 2000, but had caught up with the first two books by the preceding winter), and the moment I noticed how invested I’d become.

Terminator Salvation is a movie that a lot of people have been waiting for since James Cameron’s original film came out in 1984.  I’m sure a lot of people watched the first three Terminator movies (and perhaps The Sarah Connor Chronicles) wishing to see more of the post-Judgment-Day world.  For those people, director McG has given you a movie that takes place almost entirely in a 2018 world where humanity is fighting a losing battle against the machines.  And for the first time in the history of the series, there isn’t a bit of time travel.

In ‘How I Got These Scars’ #30, I wrote about the ten ‘Deep Space Nine’ writers who comprised the backbone and vision for the Star Trek series that is widely considered, if not the most popular, to be the best of the five live action TV projects. In this special series, I’m going to explore the individual contributions of those writers, which continues with the man who grew into a Star Trek institution, Ronald D. Moore.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a new feature film based on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise could make its way to theaters. Buffy creator Joss Whedon hasn’t been approached and the movie won’t be a big screen version of the television series that ran from 1997 to 2003:

The new “Buffy” film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching “Star Trek.”

How can a Buffy movie be produced without Whedon, you ask?

But don’t hold that against him!

Legend of the Seeker
“Fever”
Originally Broadcast the Weekend of Saturday, May 16th, 2009

The penultimate episode of the season, “Fever” was exciting from beginning to end.  We learned at the end of last week’s episode (“Sanctuary”) that the only way for Richard to defeat Darken Rahl is to use the power of Orden. That power is split between the three Boxes of Orden (recall the events of “Bloodline”) and those three boxes have been scattered for safekeeping, with Richard’s sister Jennsen holding on to two of them.

HYGOTS No. 32

One of the things you wouldn’t really expect to encounter at this site would be mention of the sensation that has become known simply as the Twilight Saga. Stephenie Meyer’s vampire love story needs no real introduction, as it has become a phenomenon all its own, a completed series of four books and a successful first film with a second well on its way. The fans are rabid, okay.

The last of the networks has released its schedule for the 2009-2010 television season. Returning genre shows are Smallville and Supernatural. Smallville enters its ninth season, and the CW is guaranteeing there won’t be a tenth by moving it to the death slot, 8:00 p.m., Fridays. Supernatural remains in its Thursday 9:00 p.m. time slot.

What’s taking Smallville’s old 8:00 p.m. Thursday slot? The new series, Twilight Vampire Diaries, which involves vampire brothers (one good, the other not so good, naturally) who vie for the soul of a girl and her friends and family.

Getting the axe completely is Reaper.
