Variety reports that 26 new episodes of Futurama will be produced by 20th Century Fox TV and aired on Comedy Central in mid-2010. Recall that the animated sitcom originally ran on FOX from 1999 to 2003 and released four direct-to-DVD movies between 2007 and 2009. Three of those movies were edited into individual episodes and aired on Comedy Central; the fourth will presumably air later this year.
I simply love Futurama. I can sit down and watch the original 72 episodes over and over and over again. The humor feels fresh each and every time. So I should be thrilled that another 26 episodes are on their way. But truth be told I’m not sure how excited to get. I’ve only seen the first three direct-to-DVD movies in their edited forms on Comedy Central. They were good but not great.
Perhaps that can be chalked up to the longer length of the movies, though, and new half-hour episodes will be just as hilarious as the old ones. The article points out that the episodes may first air on a broadcast network (FOX, anyone?) before they hit Comedy Central. Either way we won’t be seeing them before summer 2010, it seems.

I’m hoping that they’ll release a collected version of the four films. I’ve only gotten the first two (and therefore seen the first two), but am definitely interested in seeing the lot of them.
Very happy to hear they’re bringing the show itself back!

Yes, but I hope they’re able to capture the spirit of the original show. I’ve only seen one of the four movies, and I felt it fell a bit flat.
Maybe I’m just jaded by the return of Family Guy – which hasn’t been as good as it was pre-cancellation.
