It looks like the Futurama will-they-sign-a-new-deal-or-won’t-they drama has finally come to a close. According to The Toronto Star the original voice cast and 20th Century Fox TV have signed a brand spanking new contract that will see the likes of John DiMaggio, Billy West and Katey Sagal returning to the roles of Fry, Leela, Bender and others. Actually, the article notes that only two members of the cast have signed but suggests rest likely will before “the end of the day.”

HYGOTS No. 42

July 31st, 2009

A few weeks ago, I wrote a review for the latest X-Men film, which for brevity’s sake we’re going to call, simply, ‘Wolverine,’ and in its I touched on the earlier three films, which I generally consider to be some of the best superhero films to have been made. I imagine I might have a higher opinion of them if Marvel Comics could bother to live up to the hype that persists in the publishing world, which has, more than anything, bolstered the modern success of the House of Ideas.

It’s new comic book day! Dozens of new books will be hitting the racks today. Head over to Previews to see the list of new comics and then hit the comments to share which books are on your pull list this week.

The other day I read at TrekMovie that the first act of the first episode of fan series Starship Farragut: The Animated Episodes is now available online. I think I remember reading about this fan production when it was first announced. I haven’t watched the first act yet but I was impressed with the trailer, although some of the voices had a strange echo sound. Reading the TrekMovie article got me to thinking about fan films, fan series and fan productions in general. How many are really worth watching?

Third time’s the charm. That’s the saying, right? Well, I wouldn’t say that’s the case with Warehouse 13. The third episode wasn’t much better than the first two but then again it wasn’t much worse. I am more invested in Artie’s storyline, the one about strange power spikes and attempts to hack into Warehouse 13. Apparently things will come to a head in tomorrow’s episode. The character of Leena continues to simply take up space on the screen. At least there was a smattering of humor and some groping.

I didn’t attend Comic-Con International: San Diego 2009 but I read all about it on the Internet. That’s almost like being there, right? No, probably not. Still, I discuss some of the videos I watched and some of the things I read about over the past four days. And I’ll review Captain America #601 (A Very Special Issue).

This movie, also known as Gojira vs. Mosura, was released in 1992. It was the fourth entry in the “Heisei” series of Godzilla movies and the 19th Godzilla movie overall. As the title implies, it saw Godzilla pitted against Mothra. The plot involves a meteor, an Indiana Jones-type character, his ex-wife, their daughter, the Cosmos (a pair of tiny priestesses), a mysterious island, a giant egg and, of course, Mothra (in both his larval and adult forms). It wasn’t a great movie but it was enjoyable and much better than the previous Godzilla movie I reviewed for Lower Decks (Son of Godzilla).

While reporting the premiere date for Syfy’s Caprica (Friday, January 22nd, 2010 from 9-11PM), The Live Feed quoted Battlestar Galactica actor Edward James Olmos as saying, about Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica telefilm:

“I guarantee this will not be the last movie on ‘Battlestar Galactica,’” he said. “It’s going to be so successful it will rock their pants off.”

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan supposedly tells the story of the television series from the point of view of the humanoid Cylons (the skinjobs). So I imagine the next movie will be from the point of view of the Centurions, filled with two hours of clomping around on their metal feet, shooting things with their arm cannons, whipping out their nasty claws and glaring at things with their red eye.

Remember when you were excited about new Battlestar Galactica episodes and/or telefilms? I can’t. It’s been that long.

According to this CBS press release, there will be a panel discussion of the upcoming comic book miniseries based on Jericho at Comic-Con International tonight. The press release includes the following tidbits:

The debut of the comic book series – Jericho: Season 3: Civil War — will pick up where the television program left off, answering many questions for its passionate fans. The first issue of the comic book is scheduled for an October release and will be a six issue miniseries from DDP and the show’s original creators and producers.

There will be 500 copies of a special black and white mini-comic for sale at $5 a pop. If anyone at Comic-Con drops by this panel and has any news to pass along, please hit the comments.

According to a press release posted at its official website, syndicated action/adventure series Legend of the Seeker will return for its second season the weekend of Saturday, November 7th, 2009. Actress Tabrett Bethell will be a series regular, reprising her character of Cara the Mord’Sith from the Season One finale (read my review of “Reckoning” here). And Charisma Carpenter will have a guest spot in the premiere.

Is anyone else excited? Tabrett Bethell will add an interesting dynamic to the series. As I’ve mentioned time and time again, I became a big fan of Legend of the Seeker about halfway through the first season when the show turned a corner and became lots of fun. Of course, I’ve never read any of the Terry Goodkind novels the series is based on, and that probably makes things easier. So bring on Season Two!
