HYGOTS No. 41

July 24th, 2009

As late as 2006, the creators of the original ‘Stargate’ were still thinking about continuing it. This might sound odd, because on TV there’s been two series, with a third on the way, that’ve developed quite a following, who are quite convinced that the 1995 film continued already. On Tuesday, ‘Stargate: SG-1’ was commemorated with its pilot, “Children of the Gods,” released as an expanded and updated DVD. I want to have a look at that, I really do, but you see, I’m with those creators of the original ‘Stargate.’ I think the story has yet to continue.

Last week’s episode of Eureka was a bit of an improvement over the mid-season premiere, but only just. It was a Jo episode so Erica Cerra had a lot of screen time and that always helps. Carter spent the bulk of the episode trying to pass a stress test and wasn’t involved with the main storyline, which saw Jo testing a new device intended to record DNA in order to better protect the town. Or something like that. It didn’t work right and Jo was knocked out.

“He’s intelligent but inexperienced. His pattern indicates two-dimensional thinking.”

I’ve been fighting this one for years. But this is a year for change, and since ‘Star Trek’ (2009) opened the door with our first official look at Kirk’s winning performance in the Kobayashi Maru no-win scenario, I guess the timing was right to reexamine ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.’

It’s new comic book day! Dozens of new books will be hitting the racks today. Head over to Previews to see the list of new comics and then hit the comments to share which books are on your pull list this week.

With the San Diego Comic-Con coming up later this week I discuss my one and only experience with a convention. I also write about not having read Captain America: Reborn #1 despite having had it waiting for weeks. And I propose making Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Woman continuing series the third ongoing title in my sad little pull list.

In 2007 the final book in J.K. Rowling’s famous book series was released, the same year Hollywood got around to ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,’ the fifth book. That film concluded with an epic wizarding clash in the halls of the Ministry of Magic, where it was finally confirmed for all that Voldemort had returned, after ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ had resolved the entire affair. All the secrets were out, and yet the fans were still enthralled to see it play out on the big screen. With the release of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,’ a different kind of culmination comes to pass, the sixth and final film before audiences, in 2010 and 2011, have a chance to experience the conclusion all over again. Far from a slowing momentum, the odd way in which the books and films have complemented each other only further lends the symbiotic relationship along the path, to the point where the films become bigger all the time because they are and they aren’t, exactly, what came before them. They become an expression, more and more, of what makes the story of Harry Potter so great, so timeless, even as they so immediately make an extended moment of it in our own time, at the start of its impact on the culture.

ICv2 is reporting that Dynamite Entertainment has acquired the rights to publish comic books based on the various Stargate television shows (Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate: Universe). Three ongoing titles, one based on each show, are planned. The Stargate: Universe series will be a prequel while the Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis series will apparently be continuations of the television shows (Season Eleven and Season Six, respectively).

Dynamite will kick things off with a special $1 introductory comic but no release date has been announced yet. Apparently, comics based on Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis were published in the past by Avatar, with the last issue(s) coming out in July of 2007. I had no idea.

Syfy has announced its fall premiere dates; you read the official press release at the futon critic). The latest entry in the Stargate franchise, Stargate: Universe, will premiere on Friday, October 2nd with a two-hour installment running from 9-11PM ET. The following week it will settle into its regular 9-10PM time slot. It will be be followed by Sanctuary in its second season. Personally, I’m much more excited about new episodes of Sanctuary than the premiere of Stargate: Universe. Still, I’ll give it three or four episodes to impress me.

I can’t remember where exactly I watched this online. I think it was the Internet Archive but it doesn’t seem to be available anymore. It may also have been Hulu or Fancast. In any case, I don’t have a copy available so this review won’t have any images. Unfortunately, I remember enough about this monstrosity that I’m confident I can paint a pretty good representation of just how bad it is. The Horror of Party Beach isn’t quite what you’d expect from a combination of Beach Blanket Bingo and The Creature from the Black Lagoon (I’d actually like to see that) but take a bad teen movie and add a bad monster movie and you’ve got the basic idea behind The Horror of Party Beach.

Uh-oh. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox TV hasn’t been able to reach an agreement with the talented men and women who provide the voices for Futurama. Apparently they wanted ten times what they made during the production of the first run of episodes, seen on FOX between 1999 and 2003. The company seems confident they can replace the voice actors or, and this is pure conjecture, they’re confident that announcing they can replace the voice actors will help negotiations.

Either way, the new episodes announced in June are still projected to premiere on cable channel Comedy Central sometime in 2010. Will anyone want to watch Futurama without John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tress MacNeille and Katey Sagal as Fry, Leela, Bender, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Zoidberg, Hermes, Amy and Zapp Brannigan?
