LOST 6×10 – “The Package”
March 31st, 2010
For most of the series, Jin and Sun have never really been at the center of things. Both characters have had their moments (Jin’s trip on the raft, Sun’s pregnancy, etc.), but they’ve mostly been followers instead of leaders. So while the first Sun/Jin-centric episode of the season isn’t as explosive as last week’s Richard-centric one, it doesn’t mean the story isn’t moving forward.

Would it warm your hearts to know I still haven’t exhausted some of my favorite material as fodder for this column? This week we finally reach ‘The Fifth Element,’ a film that’s been a cult phenomenon but probably still something that’s never quite gotten its due, a true visionary achievement that could still support a franchise given the opportunity. A sequel, ‘Mr. Shadow,’ has been rumored for about ten years now, and it’s not as if Luc Besson has disappeared into obscurity or anything. How about it, ready for this one?

This week, last night in fact, was the return of ‘FlashForward’ on ABC. Along with the ‘V’ remake, it’s supposed to be the network’s next best shot at recapturing the ‘Lost’ phenomenon, a sci-fi mindbender that defies expectations and redefines television. I haven’t been the most dedicated viewer, but that has nothing to do with the show so much as a crowded Thursday evening for me, but I’ve been paying enough attention to know that so far, it’s been pretty successful in its mission. Part of the allure for me, though, has been that before it was a TV series, ‘FlashForward’ was a book.
LOST – 6×8 – “Recon”
March 19th, 2010
Don’t look now, but the final season of LOST is about halfway over. In just a few weeks, we’re finally going to be at the end of the road, and I’m starting to realize that every hour I watch is one hour closer to the end. And, as far as new episodes go, we’re starting to run out.

This week’s topic is Battlestar Galactica. I must start it out by confessing I am not by nature a fan of the franchise. If I didn’t continually work at it, I would almost have no working knowledge about any of it. As it is, I watched the mini-series that heralded the reinvention back in 2003 out of curiosity, having never seen the original version, and stopped watching the new show out of diminishing interest at the end of its second season, quite content to leave it behind even as I learned its fourth season would be its last. In many ways, BSG and me are a lot like ‘Babylon 5’ and me, as chronicled in my last column. But, there are always interesting complications.

I had a most curious awakening recently. I know how common it is to stick with pretty rigid opinions in the sci-fi/fantasy community (the “genre” of both Lower Decks’ and HYGOTS’ focus), but I also know that in my own life, I seem capable of pretty radically changing my own, sometimes at the drop of a dime. When their album ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ was released a decade ago, my only opinion of the video for “Beautiful Day” was how thoroughly preening and irritating U2 lead singer Bono was, just in his dancing. I couldn’t stand the band, even though I’d flirted with being a fan five years earlier when, of all things, they’d done a song for the ‘Batman Forever’ soundtrack (“How Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me”). I was twenty years old, U2 was twenty, and beyond Batman, my closest connection was “Staring at the Sun,” another song I liked, but at the very peak of general discontent for what they’d become, synthesized, forgettable pop. Anyway, not so long after writing U2 off forever, I suddenly became one of their biggest fans, and for the last decade, I’ve remained in their camp. How is any of this relevant? Have you heard of a show called ‘Babylon 5’? Yeah, well, for me, today ‘B5’ is a little like U2.
