Summary

Teyla and Dr. Hewston discuss Teyla's attraction to another Atlantis resident, no name is mentioned. Dr. Hewston tells Teyla that she'll have to make the first move, but Teyla says that isn't the way her people operate. It's a day of rest on Atlantis, recommended by Dr. Heightmeyer since rest days don't happen on their own. Dr. Hewston suggests that the two get some lunch. Teyla agrees, and agrees to meet Dr. Hewston after she retrieves her bantos rods from the gym. Seconds later, there's an explosion. Teyla survives the blast but is impaled with a piece of shrapnel. There's no sign of Dr. Hewston.

(three hours earlier)

Mike Branton manages to talk Dr. Weir into having lunch with him in an hour, despite her protestations that she won't get into relationships with people that work under her. Weir later goes to Teyla's quarters and begs off from having lunch with her. Teyla tells Weir that she's supposed to give Dr. Hewston lessons in bantos fighting later that afternoon, so Weir not concern herself with Teyla.

Later still, Weir runs into Dr. Beckett. She's changed out of her base uniform, which Beckett notices. He invites her to accompany him and Dr. McKay on a fishing trip to the mainland. She declines and he figures that she's got a "hot date."

Weir and Branton have lunch and end up arguing over which movie is better, Annie Hall or When Harry Met Sally, with Weir liking the former and Branton preferring the latter. He notes that any woman that likes When Harry Met Sally must think that men and women can't be friends. Weir says perhaps she does. So, asks Branton, where does that leave him? "At lunch." So, reasons Branton, if lunch is all he gets, he has somewhere he'd like to take Weir during his lunch.

They finish their lunch on a bench overlooking the ocean. Branton ends up kissing Weir when lunch is over. She kisses back, but ends up pulling away and telling Branton that she "can't do this." She tells him that a relationship would keep her from giving her job her full attention. Branton tries to convince her otherwise, but she's called to the control room where she learns that there's been an explosion near the gym. Three people are dead and many more injured. Initial indications are that it may have been a bomb.

(five hours earlier)

Sheppard and Ronon find Teyla. She's previously agreed to let Sheppard teach her golf with Ronon. She tells Sheppard that she's made plans to meet Weir for lunch instead. And the time between then and lunch? Time to do paperwork. Sheppard lets her off the hook, but not Ronon, who also remembers some paperwork he needs to do.

Sheppard and Ronon go to the makeshift driving range. Ronon thinks it's a silly game if all it entails is hitting a little ball into the water. Sheppard explains the game, but since they don't have a course, Ronon is essentially right. Sheppard starts to tell Ronon how difficult it is to develop a swing as good as his. Ronon picks up a club and smacks the ball, one-handed, far out into the ocean. Nothing to it.

Beckett shows up at the driving range. Dr. Watson, who was also using the driving range, starts to tell him about a pain he's having, but Beckett cuts him off. It's the good doctor's day off, and Dr. Cole is on duty. Watson heads off to the infirmary. Beckett invites both Ronon and Sheppard on his fishing trip with McKay, but they're perfectly happy on the driving range. After Beckett leaves, Ronon hits another ball into the ocean one-handed and tells Sheppard that it's time for a real sport. Sheppard tries the one-handed shot and doesn't fare nearly as well. He hurries off after Ronon.

In the gym, Ronon shows Sheppard a game where the object is to take your opponent's flag. Each competitor is armed with a rod and tucks his flag into the back of his pants. In round one, Ronon quickly relieves Sheppard of his flag. For round two, the game gets more difficult, you have to play one-handed. Again, Ronon quickly wins, and Sheppard takes a knee to the gut in the process. Round three is on one leg, and still using only one hand. This time, Sheppard takes an elbow to the chin. Still he keeps his flag, since he lands on it. He gets up and tells Ronon he has another idea.

Sheppard and Ronon are in Sheppard's quarters. Ronon smashes a beer can against his forehead. This is what Sheppard considers a day off, drinking beer, eating snacks and relaxing. He thinks Ronon's game is too much like his regular job. He and Ronon chat a bit. Ronon has been there a year and a half. Sheppard asks if he's dating anyone, but Ronon says he's not ready yet. Ronon asks about Sheppard. Sheppard's been married before and says he's not very good at it. Besides, he says, there's no one on the station that really interests him. Ronon tells Sheppard that he always thought Sheppard and Teyla would get together. Sheppard seems to consider that for a moment, then they hear an explosion.

Sheppard and Ronon arrive at the blast site. Beckett is already there treating the wounded. We see Teyla being hauled off to the infirmary on a stretcher. Dr. Zelenka is examining the blast site. He tells Sheppard and Ronon that witnesses report that Dr. Hewston simply exploded. There's no explosive residue, though, that would indicate that she was holding a bomb. McKay claims he's got a lead, but he's in his lab investigating it.

(fourteen hours earlier)

McKay (in his bathrobe) is in the infirmary chewing out Drs. Hewston and Watson. They were sent to catalogue one of the Ancient labs. They turned on one of the devices without knowing what it did. When they found that the device was emitting radiation, they turned it off. McKay reads them the riot act about how the devices on Atlantis could end up killing thousands of people, despite the fact that he often does exactly the same thing. Beckett gives the two researchers a tentative clean bill of health. McKay gives them both the following day off, and they remind him that they have the day off anyway due to the mandatory day of rest. McKay had forgotten that the day of rest was upon them. Beckett reminds him about their fishing trip. McKay is less than thrilled.

The next day, McKay visits Katie Brown in her lab. He's looking for an excuse to get out of fishing with Beckett, and asks her to lunch. She can't leave the lab because she's baby sitting some ferns that they believe may hold the key to curing Leukemia. He offers to bring her lunch and stay with her during her baby sitting. She agrees and he heads off to get lunch.

In the cafeteria, Beckett sees McKay getting lunch for two and assumes that McKay is packing for their trip. McKay lies that Brown laid a guilt trip on him about not spending enough time with her. Beckett lets McKay off the hook when McKay promises to go fishing with him next week. As McKay finishes his gathering, he notices Weir having lunch with Branton.

Back in Brown's lab, Brown and McKay discuss their relationship since the incident when Laura Cadmon shared, and took over, McKay's body and "forced" him to kiss her. Both agree that things were a bit awkward after that. Brown appreciates that McKay has recently been making an effort to spend more time with her. McKay says that seeing his sister so happy with her family has made him realize that he'd like to get married some day. McKay tells Brown how much he likes her. She says the same about him, which he finds "baffling." The two come close to kissing when the sound of the explosion interrupts them.

Later, in McKay's lab, McKay tells Sheppard, Ronon and Zelenka about the machine that Hewston and Watson briefly turned on. Since it was Hewston that exploded, McKay began checking into the machine. It was a weapon the Ancients were developing to fight the Wraith. It was designed to create explosive tumors in the affected Wraith's body. The project was abandoned when the Ancients found that it affected everyone around it, humans and Wraith alike. Watson was exposed, too, so they need to find him before he explodes, which could happen at any moment. And where is Dr. Watson? In the infirmary, where Dr. Beckett is preparing to treat Watson's leg for an injury sustained in the explosion.

(two hours earlier)

McKay tells Beckett that he's spending the day with Katie Brown. Beckett finds Zelenka and invites him to go fishing, but he's busy cleaning up in a chess tournament. Beckett then finds Lorne, but he's busy painting. Next up is Dr. Biro, but she talks so much when she sees him coming that he decides not to invite her. With his fishing trip effectively a bust, Beckett goes to the infirmary to catch up on paperwork. Dr. Cole is the doctor on call, but she's got a migraine, and Beckett relieves her.

Beckett is finishing up wrapping a sprained ankle when the explosion occurs. He gets a team together and rushes off to help. He ends up accompanying Teyla back to the infirmary and removes the shrapnel from her. Next up is Dr. Watson. McKay radios Beckett with the information that Watson has an explosive tumor. He tells Beckett to clear out everyone, and that Sheppard is on the way with an ordnance disposal team.

Beckett orders everyone else to leave the area, as he's called for a "Protocol Seven" for the entire level. One nurse refuses to leave, noting that he can't do the surgery by himself. Once everyone else is out, Carson locks down the infirmary. He's planning on removing the tumor. McKay and Sheppard both try to convince Beckett to get clear instead of trying to save Watson, but he won't hear of it.

Beckett manages to remove the tumor. He places it in an organ transport cooler and open access to the infirmary level. An ordnance removal team rolls an explosion-proof container toward the O.R. Beckett decides not to wait for them. He asks the nurse to close up Watson, and brings the cooler to the disposal team. He hands off the container and starts to walk away, then the tumor explodes. Beckett is caught in the fireball from the blast.

Two days later, McKay packs Beckett's belongings to be sent back to Earth. Ronon comes in while he packs and offers to help. McKay declines. McKay tells Ronon that he'll be delivering the news to Beckett's mother. He starts to talk about the things he could have done differently that might have prevented Beckett's death, like going fishing, or investigating the Ancient device earlier or not sending junior team members to catalogue the lab. Ronon tells him not to think that way, that what's done is done.

In the infirmary, Teyla convinces Sheppard to help her get to the memorial service. Dr. Watson lies in another bed, recovering. She asks Sheppard how he's doing. It hasn't hit him yet, but he's not looking forward to it when it does. Teyla "feels a great sadness."

At the memorial service, Weir officiates. As a bagpipe plays, Sheppard, McKay, Ronon, Lorne, Zelenka and Cole take Beckett's casket through the Stargate for it's return to Earth.

Later, McKay stands at the edge of Atlantis' landing port and looks out into the ocean. Beckett, or at least McKay's memory of him, walks up and asks how things went on Earth. McKay tells him that his family was wonderful, and the church was packed. He tells Beckett that things won't be the same without him, and Beckett agrees. McKay notes that it's a big universe, and maybe they'll bump into each other again some day. Beckett agrees.

McKay tells Beckett that he was the closest thing McKay had to a best friend, and that he's sorry. Beckett tells McKay that it wasn't his fault, something a best friend would say, but also the truth. McKay says his goodbyes and Beckett fades away.

Review

Well, I have mixed feelings on this one. For starters, I knew Beckett wasn't going to live to see the end of the episode before I even got a chance to watch it. I'd heard that Paul McGillion was going to be written out, and another web site featured a graphic that made it pretty clear that Sunday was going to be his final episode.

I've not been a huge fan of Dr. Beckett from the beginning, but I don't really see the point in writing him out of the show. I know, I know, there's an actress being brought in to take his place, but was there really a need to replace him? Maybe the show runners are angling for a new dynamic among the cast. It would explain Weir's new suitor and Sheppard's attitude that there's no one on the station that's particularly attractive to him, and possibly even Teyla's mystery crush and Ronon's mention of Teyla to Sheppard. It had seemed over the first few seasons of Atlantis that Weir and Sheppard would be the series permanent O'Neill/Carter relationship.

Speaking of all those match ups, love was in the air on Atlantis. It seems terribly un-Rodney like to think of someone other than himself, but he seems to have been making time for Katie Brown. Not only has Ronon not yet felt ready to find someone, he apparently never explained to anyone who he left behind on Sateda or, rather, what happened to her before he left Sateda.

One of the disconnects for me with the episode, and I'll leave you with this, was how the character that died, the one you might have expected to be the focus of the episode, was the one given the short shrift. We gained some insight into the inner feelings of Sheppard, Weir, McKay and even Ronon and Teyla, but all Beckett did for most of the episode was talk about his fishing trip with Rodney. Did he really have no life worth exploring before his death? Maybe that was the point, that he'd been taken for granted so often that he wasn't really seriously considered until his death.
