Review
Usually when a show does a two-part episode the first
half is quite spectacular and the second somewhat of a
letdown. Not this episode. Not even close. Part one was
good, maybe a little muddled, but good and entertaining.
Part two was… bloody spectacular. Looking back on
the series as a whole and having watched the episode a
couple of times now, it's my favorite from the entire
run. It's nothing short of amazing.
Part one started off on the wrong foot, while it wasn't
bad to start an hour before the end of "Precipice" there
were unnecessary changes. While the teaser showed Cally
running away through the woods while shots were being fired,
the episode had he standing in the way of the shots, running
in a rock quarry. She is knocked down by Tyrol before any
shots are fired. Why was this changed? It was unnecessary
and detracts from the impact almost immediately.
Also in Part One. So the Cylons have just now decided
to start looking for Hera? It just seems a convenient plot
device used to plant seeds of doubt in Galactica Boomer.
They've had the human race under their thumb for
four months. The child has been "dead" over
a year. They didn't try and look when they first
got there? It just seems odd to me.
And, you are going to tell me that out of the thousands
of refugees that have just landed on Galactica the one
that happens to be standing right next to Starbuck is the
real mother of the child? Those are some funky odds if
you ask me.
Now for the good. "Adama's Atmo FTL Jump".
Wow. Wowwow. Wow wow wowwee wow wow. That was bloody awesome.
That has to be one of the most awesome maneuvers/special
effects scenes on a science fiction show. My jaw dropped.
The gravitas is almost unmatched.
The final scene between Saul and Ellen Tigh is also appropriately
heart-wrenching. Ellen, who has been a despicable character
almost since her introduction comes across as sympathetic
and sorrowful, and it makes the viewer sad to see her go.
The destruction of the Pegasus was also handled very well.
While I was initially surprised to see it stick around
so long, it was actually almost painful to watch get destroyed.
But it was a spectacular scene.
The episode does a tremendous job of getting the show
back into space, where it belongs, while also setting up
future character arcs and plotlines that are sure to continue
throughout the season, and perhaps the show's entire
run.
