Summary

The episode opens one hour before the final events of "Precipice". While Gaeta makes certain that the insurgents gets news of the would be executions, Anders and his team slowly make their way towards the rendezvous point. As the executions are about to take place Tyrol sweeps Cally out of the line of fire and the centurions are mowed down. As Anders team is attacked a contingent of marines brought that Boomer brought along destroys the attacking Cylons.

As the detainees are rescued they are elated to hear that the resistance has made contact with Galactica and a rescue operation is planned.

Baltar is still a prison in his office and is forced to watch as the Cylons debate what to do about humanity, one of them suggesting destroying the entire city with a nuclear weapon.

D'Anna Biers (or at least the same model of Cylon) is in the meantime plagued by troublesome dreams and pays a visit to a human soothsayer. After what seems to be much gibberish she tells Biers that the child of two peoples lives. Biers realizes that this means that the child of Boomer and Helo is still alive, and she becomes determined to find it.

As the resistance learns of Ellen Tigh's cooperation with the Cylons, Starbuck seems to have become complacent in her life with little Kacey and Leoben.

Aboard Galactica Apollo and Adama finally apologize to each other as Adama prepares to ride off to battle. The beleaguered son pleads his father not to go through with what he believes to be a suicide mission. They pledge to see each other again in eighteen hours at the rendezvous point.

Boomer begins her mission, which is to recover the launch keys for all of the colonial ships. As she makes her way into the Cylon base, Biers, who tells Boomer that her child is still alive, confront her. Boomer cripples Biers, by shooting her in the kneecaps, claiming that Adama would never lie to her.

As the insurgents prepare a massive attack to coordinate with the arrival of Galactica Roslin tells Anders that Maya and her baby, Hera, are to be protected at all costs. On Galactica, Adama tells his crew that if they succeed history will remember them as heroes. The order to "Prepare for combat jump" is given.

Review

Usually when a show does a two-part episode the first half is quite spectacular and the second somewhat of a letdown. Not this episode. Not even close. Part one was good, maybe a little muddled, but good and entertaining. Part two was… bloody spectacular. Looking back on the series as a whole and having watched the episode a couple of times now, it's my favorite from the entire run. It's nothing short of amazing.

Part one started off on the wrong foot, while it wasn't bad to start an hour before the end of "Precipice" there were unnecessary changes. While the teaser showed Cally running away through the woods while shots were being fired, the episode had he standing in the way of the shots, running in a rock quarry. She is knocked down by Tyrol before any shots are fired. Why was this changed? It was unnecessary and detracts from the impact almost immediately.

Also in Part One. So the Cylons have just now decided to start looking for Hera? It just seems a convenient plot device used to plant seeds of doubt in Galactica Boomer. They've had the human race under their thumb for four months. The child has been "dead" over a year. They didn't try and look when they first got there? It just seems odd to me.

And, you are going to tell me that out of the thousands of refugees that have just landed on Galactica the one that happens to be standing right next to Starbuck is the real mother of the child? Those are some funky odds if you ask me.

Now for the good. "Adama's Atmo FTL Jump". Wow. Wowwow. Wow wow wowwee wow wow. That was bloody awesome. That has to be one of the most awesome maneuvers/special effects scenes on a science fiction show. My jaw dropped. The gravitas is almost unmatched.

The final scene between Saul and Ellen Tigh is also appropriately heart-wrenching. Ellen, who has been a despicable character almost since her introduction comes across as sympathetic and sorrowful, and it makes the viewer sad to see her go.

The destruction of the Pegasus was also handled very well. While I was initially surprised to see it stick around so long, it was actually almost painful to watch get destroyed. But it was a spectacular scene.

The episode does a tremendous job of getting the show back into space, where it belongs, while also setting up future character arcs and plotlines that are sure to continue throughout the season, and perhaps the show's entire run.
