Summary

Apollo sits in his ready room as Dualla gives him a list of the duties he will have to perform with the civilian fleet. Apollo says that he doesn't know if he can just stay behind and that his father is stronger man than he. Dualla tells her husband that he will do what needs to be done because he is and Adama.

Anders tells Tigh that his wife betrayed the resistance, and that she would have ruined all chances of the humans getting off the planet had the marines not been there. Tigh understands what must be done. He sits with his wife, who confesses her sins to him. She drinks a cup he prepared for her, and slowly she falls over, lifeless. The Colonel collapses over his wife's body, crying.

As squadrons of Vipers fly around the planet and release drones the insurgents set off bombs all across the city and rally for their evacuation. The drones the Vipers launched show up as two battlestars on the Cylon's radars. "Caprica Boomer" tells the ruling council about this new development and Baltar turns white as a sheet.

As the human forces attempt to enter the detention center they hold outside the gates as Galactica jumps into orbit. But not really into orbit. The massive ship begins to plummet towards the earth below it, launching fighters along the way. Before the ship plunges to the ground below it jumps back into orbit where it begins to battle two base stars. The fighters launched in the atmosphere start taking down sentry towers and providing cover for the land forces. As Galactica begins to hold off the two orbiting ships, two more base stars jump into orbit.

As Galactica nears its destruction Adama stands tall and tells his crew that it has been an honor to serve with them. As the last shoots are about to be fired the Pegasus arrives, tearing into and destroying one of the base stars.

As Anders and Starbuck attempt to flee Starbuck runs back after Kacey, wanting to save her child. She is cut off by Leoben, who will give up the toddler in exchange for Starbuck's confession of love. She does so, but by drawing the Cylon near she stabs him, killing him one last time before she leaves.

As the human forces make their way to the detention centers Anders manages to find and rescue his wife, Starbuck. The Cylons begin the evacuation of the planet and Biers is left behind to detonate a nuclear weapon. Gaeta prepares to assassinate Baltar, but gives the President one last chance to redeem himself, by stopping Biers.

After Galactica has jumped to safety the Pegasus continues to get pounded by the 3 remaining base stars. As Apollo orders evacuation of the ship he lingers on the bridge one last moment before leaving. Pegasus goes down in a blaze of glory, ramming one base star with the debris flying out and destroying another.

As the last of the human refugees leave Baltar find Biers amongst the rubble of the city, but she no longer wishes to bomb the area. Baltar has found the body of Maya and the child Hera, the one the Cylons have been missing for over a year.

On Galactica the crews are reunited. Father and son share a moment. Tigh and Adama give each other looks of respect. Starbuck is about to tell Anders about Kacey… when her real mother comes along and take the child back.

In Roslin's office she is told about the unknown fate of Maya and Hera. She tells her aide that, "This is bigger than us. This is life."

On Galactica Adama almost ritualistically shaves his moustache. He steps out into the corridor, greeted by the sound off hustle and bustle he hasn't heard in quite some time. Things are almost back to normal.

Review

Usually when a show does a two-part episode the first half is quite spectacular and the second somewhat of a letdown. Not this episode. Not even close. Part one was good, maybe a little muddled, but good and entertaining. Part two was… bloody spectacular. Looking back on the series as a whole and having watched the episode a couple of times now, it's my favorite from the entire run. It's nothing short of amazing.

Part one started off on the wrong foot, while it wasn't bad to start an hour before the end of "Precipice" there were unnecessary changes. While the teaser showed Cally running away through the woods while shots were being fired, the episode had he standing in the way of the shots, running in a rock quarry. She is knocked down by Tyrol before any shots are fired. Why was this changed? It was unnecessary and detracts from the impact almost immediately.

Also in Part One. So the Cylons have just now decided to start looking for Hera? It just seems a convenient plot device used to plant seeds of doubt in Galactica Boomer. They've had the human race under their thumb for four months. The child has been "dead" over a year. They didn't try and look when they first got there? It just seems odd to me.

And, you are going to tell me that out of the thousands of refugees that have just landed on Galactica the one that happens to be standing right next to Starbuck is the real mother of the child? Those are some funky odds if you ask me.

Now for the good. "Adama's Atmo FTL Jump". Wow. Wowwow. Wow wow wowwee wow wow. That was bloody awesome. That has to be one of the most awesome maneuvers/special effects scenes on a science fiction show. My jaw dropped. The gravitas is almost unmatched.

The final scene between Saul and Ellen Tigh is also appropriately heart-wrenching. Ellen, who has been a despicable character almost since her introduction comes across as sympathetic and sorrowful, and it makes the viewer sad to see her go.

The destruction of the Pegasus was also handled very well. While I was initially surprised to see it stick around so long, it was actually almost painful to watch get destroyed. But it was a spectacular scene.

The episode does a tremendous job of getting the show back into space, where it belongs, while also setting up future character arcs and plotlines that are sure to continue throughout the season, and perhaps the show's entire run.
