Summary

As the new season opens a montage treats us to a glimpse of several characters’ lives. We see Starbuck living in what appears to be a nice apartment, but looking nearly catatonic. Ellen Tigh is seen in the throes of passion with someone (who is revealed to be one of the Cavil model Cylons). We then see Tigh in a prison cell, with a bandage over one eye being questioned by another Cavil model Cylon. It turns out that Ellen is sleeping with a Cylon to facilitate Tigh’s release. During this time Tyrol and Anders are both wiring a bomb that destroys a Cylon raider.

In Starbucks’s apartment a Leoben model Cylon is fixing dinner, giving her a healthy meal. She just sits and stares at him silently, until she asks for a knife and he comes around the table cutting her steak. After the “insurgents’” bomb goes off Loeben returns to the table only to have Starbuck stab him through the neck, and after he falls to the ground she stabs him again in the chest. He tells her he will see her again. She wipes the blood on her hand on the floor and calmly returns to the table where she begins to eat her meal, daintily dabbing her mouth with the napkin.

A meeting of the high command Cylons has some believing that violence is the only way to keep the humans under control while Caprica Six and Boomer still insist it is contrary to the reason they left the humans alive. They are having this discussion in front of Baltar who has become a prisoner of his own office.

We then cut to former President Roslin who is writing in a journal about the past four months spent under Cylon occupation. She talks about the resistance and that while they may seem inconsequential sometimes the boost in morale is terrific. She says that the insurgents have an informer inside the government that is passing down important information.

Tigh then goes to meet for Tyrol and Anders for the first time since he has been released. He congratulates them on the bomb the set off during his release and Tyrol brings out the information the inside source has given them. The New Caprica Police, a squad of humans that is going to be charged with taking care of security is about to graduate, and President Baltar will be at the ceremony. Considering all the New Caprica Police and Baltar to be traitors Tigh decides this will be their next target. They are also monitoring for a Raptor that Tigh and Tyrol believe is in orbit awaiting a signal from them.

A new model of Leoben returns home, telling Starbuck that this will continue as long as it has to, despite the fact that she has killed him 5 times. He says he merely wants what is best for her and that despite what she may think he loves her and that God means for them to be together.

On Galactica the Viper pilots are running some military training and Adama insists they stay in space to practice for the 17th run in a row. A still pudgy Apollo hears the order and goes to confront his father after one of the vipers is damaged and they have to return to dock. Apollo says that the pilots are not doing well because they have been out in space too long. Adama tells Apollo that is they can’t run the mission alone there is no way that they can do it in battle. He then accuses his son of being to soft, mentally and physically. When Apollo returns home his new wife, Dualla tells him the same thing, that he has lost his edge, that he was a soldier that needed a war.

During a Pyramid game Tigh and Tyrol talk about the ethics of war, and Tyrol believes that Tigh is beginning to cross a line. Duck, one of Galactica’s Viper pilots has volunteered for a suicide bombing of the New Caprica Police graduation. Anders asks Duck if he intends to go through with it, and he does.

On Galactica Admiral Adama shares a moment with Boomer, who has become his closest friend on the ship. No longer able to relate to his son, Adama confides and trusts in Boomer, who wants to know if Adama feels guilty for leaving the planet’s population behind.

As the insurgents manage to contact the raptor that Adama has posted above New Caprica President Baltar decides that he will not be attending the graduation. Gaeta, now an aid to the President, is also the insurgents’ secret informer and rushes out to tell Tyrol and Tigh that Baltar will not be at the ceremony.

With the new found connection to Galactica Tigh tells Tyrol to call off the bombing only if they find out that Baltar will not be at the ceremony. Gaeta attempts to get them the information in time, but Duck manages to crash and successfully bomb the ceremony.

End “Occupation”

After Duck’s bombing of the New Caprica Police the Cylon occupation force begins a crackdown n on human security. Roslin is being held in a detention center and President Baltar confronts her, asking her to help him condemn the suicide bombings. While Roslin does not agree with Tigh’s tactics she refuses to work with him.

Meanwhile the New Caprica Police prepare to go on their first assignment, with Jammer as one of their leaders. While Tyrol, Tigh and Anders wait for their newest communiqué from Galactica the police raid the camps taking Cally with them.

As Galactica prepares to go on the offensive Apollo tells his father that it may just be better to leave New Caprica behind and start fresh with the 2,000 humans that are still with the fleet.

While Starbuck sits in her apartment Leoben returns with a surprise. Apparently while Starbuck was in “The Farm” one of her ovaries was harvested, and a human/ Cylon child was born. Leoben has brought KC to meet her mother, and Starbuck wants nothing to do with her.

Jammer asks “Galactica Boomer” if there is anything she can do to help Cally, and she visits the later in her cell. Boomer says she is happy for Cally and Tyrol. However, the only thing Cally wants from Boomer is to be released.

When Roslin tries to talk Tigh down from launching any more suicide attacks he refuses, and soon another bombing occurs. Gaeta is also trying to get information about Cally for Tyrol. Tyrol tells Jammer that all collaborators like Gaeta will be made examples of when the war is over.

The Cylon government is growing weary of the attacks. Almost all of their “ruling” council decides that an execution of everyone in the detention cells and will be undertaken. They force Baltar’s cooperation by killing “Caprica Six” right in front of him. Baltar has become a prison of his own office and nearly refuses and only complies because he will be killed by one of the Cylons if he doesn’t.

In Starbuck apartment KC is running around doing little kid things are Starbuck seems genuinely disgusted by her. When Starbuck goes to the bathroom to collect herself she hears a thud. KC has fallen down the stairs and hurt herself.

Among the new detainees are Roslin and Tom Zarek who are being rounded into the trucks when Gaeta finds out about the order that Baltar has signed.

Ellen Tigh is again sleeping with the Cavil Cylon as he praises her prowess. She said it was her prowess that helped release her husband, but Cavil has other ideas. The Cylons know that Tigh is the leader of the resistance and demand that Ellen bring them some useful information or else Colonel Tigh will be brought back to detention and come out missing more than an eye.

On Galactica Boomer is being reinstated into the fleet. While some still have misgivings about having a Cylon amongst them both Adama and Helo feel that she is trustworthy and up to the challenge.

Ellen comes in when Tigh, Tyrol and Anders are having a meeting about the most important meeting the insurgency will ever have (convenient, no?). When Ellen is burning the written information she hides part of it under her shirt to give to Cavil.

The truckloads of detainees are stopped and Cavil insists that they get out and stretch their legs.

In the hospital Starbuck and Leoben watch over KC. Starbuck prays and squeezes Leoben’s hand as KC opens her eyes.

Anders is leading a group of insurgents through the forest when they meet with a landed raptor, being commanded by Boomer. Then, they are ambushed. The Cylons are using the information that Ellen gave them.

In the mass of detainees Jammer finds Cally and cuts her bonds loose and tells her to run. As Cally moves through the forest centurions march over the hills and aim at the prisoners. Zarek pushes Roslin behind him as we only hear the shots as the episode fades to black.

Review

I loved it. I loved every single moment that was onscreen. The performances were all spectacular and the tension was well paced throughout. Some people complained about last season’s finale, but these two episodes showed what type of tremendous story telling became available.

There are a few things that I do feel the need to comment on.

I’m really glad I decided to watch “The Resistance” (the 10 webisodes aired over the last month). It really helped to understand where Duck and Jammer were coming from. While it is explained in the episodes it was much more poignant to know the backstories a little bit better. Especially with Jammer. I’m still scratching my head as to why Duck went on a mission for Tigh when blamed him for his wife’s death.

I loved the dramatic shift of Starbuck. The first scene she is in in “Occupation” shows how much animosity she still holds towards the Cylons and that she is still just as rough around the edges as ever. So it became a little strange in “Precipice” to see her maternal instincts come out. She’s either got a plan going on or she is completely losing it.

This seems like a strange thing to notice, but this episode features the best centurion special effects on the show to date. It’s still not perfect, but not jarring or painful to look at like in the previous seasons.

I still think that James Callis still represents the most consistently amazing performances on the show. I was really surprised that he took a stand against signing the execution order as long as he did. He’s a prisoner of his office, totally expendable to both sides, still alive mostly from luck (against the insurgents) and the fact that “Caprica Six” and “Galactica Boomer” insisted on working with the government.

I’m going to steer away from political commentary here, but I’ve always liked Michael Hogan’s Colonel Tigh. I still do. He’s the gruff and tumble soldier. He’s not evil, but too willing to cross some lines. His monologue at the beginning of “Precipice” was nothing short of amazing. Kudos Mr. Hogan.

The irony of Tyrol trusting Jammer but hating Gaeta was not lost on me either. And for the record, I think it will be Jammer that saves the prisoners, with ordering the police to fire on the Cylons.
