Summary

The episode opens with an intense boxing match between Apollo and Helo. After a speedy burst of Starbuck flashbacks Apollo begins to make quick work of Helo.

At the same time Starbuck gets out of bed with Anders, quite gruffly. Anders says that he wants Kara and their marriage back. Starbuck wonders what will happen if she’s not ready. She leaves and heads down to the boxing ring. She looks on at the fight, smiling. Apollo is getting several shots in on Helo, but after another quick flashback he gets punched in the face and knocked down. A cut over his eye ends the match in Helo’s favor.

Apollo pulls his name out of the fighting pull, but after Starbuck puts hers in, he decides not to quit.

In the first full out flashback Apollo is on New Caprica, and he tells Dualla that he has put in for a transfer. Starbuck and Anders show up, asking if they intend to attend a groundbreaking ceremony headed by Baltar.

Also on New Caprica, Roslin finds Adama, running some dirt through his fingers. The two flirt for a few moments and we are thrust back into the present. Roslin finds Adama again, and he explains why the matches are going on. It is to prevent permanent grudges, and relieve tension amongst the crew.

Hot Dog’s name is pulled from the pool and he picks Starbuck to fight against. After some of the same flashes that Apollo had Starbuck quickly knocks him out.

Another New Caprica flashback shows Tigh and his wife at the groundbreaking celebration, with him professing how glad he is that he married her. We see Adama and Roslin again, with him smoking some plant that grows locally and Roslin planning on building a cabin by a lake.

A deck mechanic comes to the fight and Tyrol gives him some time off. Another flashback shows the chief requesting to be relieved of duty so that he and Cally may have their child on New Caprica. Adama denies it. In the present Adama steps into the ring, the crowd gets silent and then he challenges Tyrol to a fight. The bell rings and Adama quickly knocks Tyrol on his ass.

Another flashback shows Tyrol on New Caprica, trying to tell Cally that he thinks having their baby on Galactica is better. As we see Apollo watch the fight we have more jealousy-ridden flashbacks of both he and Starbuck. Even while he dances with Dualla she shifts into Starbuck. Roslin and Adama lay stoned on the ground as she asks him if this is how humanity will spend the rest of its days. She wonders if they should just enjoy the time they have.

Tyrol and Adama start exchanging hard blows, and Starbuck begins to mock Apollo, saying he’s not enough like his father. Which brings us to another flashback… Apollo brings Starbuck a drink as Dualla has left and Anders has passed out, to which Apollo says, “It’s just you and me”.

The round between Tyrol and Adama ends, and Roslin comes in and begins to coach Adama, but Adama says that he’s not going to win. On New Caprica Adama gives Tyrol and Cally permission to move to the planet. In the present Tyrol promptly takes down Adama. After Tyrol helps Adama up Adama says that one must always be ready to fight… especially when those you face are not your friends. He says that he dropped his guard once and it will not happen again.

As the spectators pack up to leave Starbuck yells at Apollo goading him, challenging him to a match. He walks away until she insults Dualla and he punches her bare handed.

During their very intense match we are treated to more flashbacks. Starbuck shows Apollo where she wants her house to be. She tells Apollo that she is not getting married. They dance around each other, in both the ring and the past. Eventually they sleep together on the ground of New Caprica. They profess their love for each other, but when Apollo awakens in the morning she is gone. When he heads back into town he finds that she has run off and married Anders. All the while they are beating the living hell out of each other in the ring…

The fight slows as they begin to remember all the good times that they have shared. They finish in a bloody embrace, seen by both Dualla and Anders.

Review

I’m not really sure what I thought about this episode. It was well acted, sure, but it was just kinda slow and plodding too. It was nice to see a lot of what happened on New Caprica however.

I will say this, the fights were very well choreographed. And the matches were pretty well put together with the matching dynamics of the story. Adama/ Tyrol was unexpected, but it worked.

So, now we know what all the Apollo and Starbuck tension was about. They did it. They whole episode lead up to it, but the suspense of it was ruined and it was pretty obvious from the beginning.

What really held the episode together for me was the flashbacks. It was nice to see a crew in an optimistic mood. It was just a couple of days ago I was commenting on how bleak and dismal the show always is. It was nice to see a slightly more upbeat episode.

But again, it was still rather plodding and predictable.

I do want to comment on Jamie Bamber’s (Apollo) performance though. He was amazing when he found out about the wedding. He looked really, truly distraught. Like someone who had really just been heartbroken.
