Summary

Before the recap begins, a quick refresher on the characters:

Niki - the woman who takes off her clothes and sees herself in the mirror
Peter - the nurse who thinks he can fly, Nathan's brother
Isaac - the druggie who can paint the future
Hiro - the businessman who can stop time
Claire - the indestructible cheerleader
Simone - the dying man's daughter
Micah - Nikki's genius son
Nathan - a politician and Peter's brother
Mohinder - the professor whose father was killed for his research
Matt – the police officer who hears voices

Matt wakes up in room bathed in a blue light. Mr. Bennett looks down at him and tells him he is fine. Matt is strapped to all sorts of strange machines and is strapped to a table. Also in the room is the mysterious man Matt saw in the bar before he passed out the other night. Mr. Bennett informs Matt that he will not be able to read thoughts as long as the mysterious man is in the room. But Matt is able to pull the name Claire from Mr. Bennett, who seems happy that Matt is progressing so well.

Mr. Bennett leaves. The mysterious man places a hand on Matt's forehead. Matt screams.

Hiro and Ando find themselves at a Las Vegas casino. Niki and Micah are also there, with the police officer who pulled them over earlier. They are taken to meet with a woman who suggests Micah waits outside. The woman tells Niki that Mr. Lendermen is willing to forgive her debt in return for a favor. They want Niki to act as insurance. Niki tells the woman she's not a whore.

In Odessa, Texas, a woman performs an autopsy on Claire. She was found naked in a river, dragged there apparently in an attempt to hide the body. The coroner removes the wooden branch from the side of Claire's head. The phone rings and the coroner walks out. Claire wakes up, takes stock of the situation, and pulls the flaps of her chest back together.

She hops off the table, pulls on a lab coat, and hides behind the open door. When the coroner walks in, Claire slips out. The door closes after her, leaving the stunned coroner alone in the room.

Isaac sits on a table next to a window, the morning light shining on his face.

Simone and Peter wake up in bed.

Ando and Hiro walk through the casino.

Mrs. Bennett and Claire's sister walk down the stairs and Mrs. Bennett calls for Claire to come to breakfast. Claire sneaks back into her house, still wearing the lab coat.

Nathan talks about the upcoming election with one of his goons. He is heading to Las Vegas to see Leberman about a campaign donation. Out of nowhere, Mohinder rushes up, calling out to Nathan. He tries to warn Nathan, telling him he is in danger. But Nathan ignores him and has his goons push Mohinder away from Nathan's car.

In Manhattan, Peter and Simone talk about what happened the night before. They talk about love and Isaac. The door buzzes. Peter climbs out of the bed to answer it. It is Nathan. He tells Peter about Mohinder's little visit. He gives his brother some money to go find his answers and to disappear. Peter is becoming a liability.

Simone has to rush off to work, to a new exhibit of Isaac's paintings. After an awkward conversation about the future of their "relationship," they decide to give it a little time.

Mr. Bennett calls Claire down for breakfast. He notices her dirty, muddy feet and asks if she was out all night. At first, she denies it, but then admits she was out with the quarterback. Mr. Bennett tells her to always be honest and that she can tell him anything. He kisses her on the forehead and leaves for work. Claire sits down on the stairs and cries.

Mohinder berates himself for his behavior in front of Nathan. Eden walks in with a package that came for while Mohinder was out. It is an urn with his father's ashes. Mohinder admits that he has not shed a single tear over his father's death. He says he has no business being in New York City and begins packing. He is going to go back to his own life and stop trying to live his father's.

But, in an awesome stroke of timing, someone knocks at the door. It is Peter, who calls through the door that he is looking for Chandra Suresh. After Eden yells back that Chandra does not live there anymore, Mohinder opens the door. Peter is holding Chandra's book and tells Mohinder that he might be one of the people Chandra wrote about, someone with an ability.

In Las Vegas, Ando succeeds brilliantly in losing all his (and Hiro's) money at the roulette table, much to Hiro's chagrin. As the ball slows down, Hiro closes his eyes and stops time. The ball floats in midair. Offering a silent prayer to the heavens, Hiro stands up and places the ball in twenty-six black, where Ando has placed his last chip. He then straightens up a glass on a waitress's tray.

When time starts again, Ando wins a bundle. Hiro feels bad about what he did, calling it cheating. But Ando wants Hiro to do it again. He reminds Hiro that Peter Parker sells pictures of Spider-Man. Hiro relents.

As Niki makes herself up in front of a mirror, she tells Tina about her black outs. She has been having violent dreams in which someone, inside her, with her, has been tearing people apart. Tina suggests that maybe Niki saw something horrible and it broke her. Micah walks in and asks his mother to play Scrabble. But Niki has to work, so Tina will play Scrabble with Micah.

Mohinder and Eden whisper about Peter in the doorway. Eden wants to follow up on Peter's ability, Mohinder is not convinced. Eden leaves and Mohinder sits down to talk with Peter, who tells him that he flew once after talking to his brother and he drew the future once after talking with Isaac. Perhaps he can only do things after being in close contact with people who actually have powers. He says he will take Mohinder to see Nathan, but then realizes Nathan is in Vegas. So he says he will take Mohinder to see Isaac.

Simone walks into Isaac's studio and the two discuss finances. Isaac needs money for painting supplies, which Simone takes to mean drugs. Isaac shows her the sketch of Simone and Peter kissing in the rain, which he insists he drew seven weeks ago. Simone still does not believe that Isaac can paint the future, but Isaac certainly does. As Simone walks out, Isaac looks down at a painting of New York City exploding that covers the floor. He tells himself he is going to be a hero.

Claire talks to Zach about what happened the night before with Brody. He tells her she should tell someone about what happened, but Claire says no. She does not have a mark on her. She tells Jackie that she cannot remember anything. When Brody sees her, he rushes off. The girl who saw Claire and Brody walk off at the bonfire stares at everyone.

In Vegas, Ando plays poker, with a little help from Hiro, who stops time and switches his cards. Niki sits at a bar, drinking. Nathan and his goon walk in, talking politics. Niki bumps into Nathan (accidentally, of course) and the two get to talking. She flirts, he flirts back.

Mohinder and Peter stand on the subway on their way to see Isaac. Mohinder is a bit skeptical about Isaac's heroin addiction and, as a scientist, skeptical about everything Peter has told him. They get to talking about Mohinder's father and Mohinder tells Peter why he believed in what his father believed in -- because he was his father's son. But Peter is convinced there is more to Mohinder than just blind devotion to his father.

Mohinder explains that, due to world events like terrorism and global disasters, everyone senses deep down that something is not right. But while his father had a romantic view of evolution, Mohinder seems slightly more pessimistic.

Isaac places a clean canvas on an easel and prepares to paint. First, he gets his painting supplies together. Then, he gets his drug supplies together. After shooting up, Isaac falls to the floor. He sees himself standing on top of Claire's high school and then sees Claire run out screaming. She stumbles on the concrete steps out.

Isaac paints Claire, with a foreboding shadow over her. His eyes are almost opaque and his is oblivious to Peter's calls from the door.

At the school, Lori (the mysterious girl who likes staring) confronts Claire. She asks what happened between Claire and Brody. Claire says nothing happened. Lori tells Claire that she, too, once went off with Brody and "nothing" happened. The two watch as Brody tries to kiss another girl in the hallway and is rebuked. He seems angry.

Hiro and Ando, wearing dapper suits, are bodily ejected from the casino. Their suitcases are tossed out after them. Ando wants to hit another casino while Hiro wants to continue their mission. A group of men, lead by a man who Ando and Hiro ripped off at the poker table, confront them in the alley. Hiro, who cannot speak English, asks Ando what is going on. Ando says he will take care of it and tells the men to back off, that his friend has powers. One of the men punches Hiro and Hiro falls to the ground.

Nathan and Niki stand in front of a large window, looking out at the desert. Nathan asks Niki if she has ever thought about soaring out over the desert. Niki replies that she once took a helicopter ride. But Nathan was talking more about actually flying. Niki seems confused, but the conversation quickly turns to Niki's relationship status. Her husband is in jail and she has a child.

Nathan tells her that he has two boys and is still married, in a happy relationship. And then he kisses Niki. She pulls away, saying she had a surprisingly great time. She thanks Nathan, says good night, and walks away. Now alone in his room, Nathan takes a drink.

Out in the hall, Niki stands in front of an elevator. She sees herself in the elevator's sliding doors; on one side is her own reflection, on the other the mystery Niki. When the elevator doors open, an arm shoots out and grabs Niki by the throat. He asks Niki what her son will think about his mother not honoring her obligations. But Niki's reply is shocking: "Niki isn't here anymore."

As the elevator doors close, the sounds of the man being brutally attacked can be heard. When the elevator doors open again, he is thrown into the hall. NotNiki places the heel of her shoe on his head and threatens to put it through if the man ever threatens "our" son again. She walks off down the hall, confident and in charge.

Nathan opens his hotel room door and finds Niki (or is it NotNiki) standing there. She walks in. They both know what is going to happen. Nathan locks the door. As Niki removes her dress and sits down on Nathan's lap, a tattoo is seen on her bare shoulder. A camera in the smoke detector on the ceiling sees it as well.

On the subway again, Mohinder balks at Peter's suggestion that they go back to see Isaac next week. He does not want to turn into someone who stalks heroin addicts. In a flash, the subway lights go out and everything freezes. Everything but Peter. He waves his hand in front of Mohinder's frozen face and looks around, shocked.

Isaac wakes up on the floor. He stares at the painting of Claire and the shadow. Still feeling the effects of the heroin, he spots another painting of her.

Claire sits on the concrete steps outside her school. Brody and his football chums walk out. Claire says she stayed late to work on banners for Spirit Week and asks for a ride home. Brody complies. She asks if he has a stick shift and then asks if she can drive.

Brody's care flies down the road. She speeds through a red light. Brody suddenly realizes that Claire knows how to drive stick shift. When Claire confronts him about what happened the other night, Brody tells her she came on to him and calls Lori a slut, saying he will call her the same thing. And he is not going to stop raping girls and, according to him, there is nothing Claire can do.

But there is. And she tells him that. And then she drives the car straight into a wall.

Mr. Bennett and the mysterious man stand over Niki and Nathan, asleep on Nathan's bed. Mr. Bennett tells the mysterious man to "just take the one" and the man walks forward.

Peter explores the frozen subway. He is very, very alone. Or at least, he is until a man who looks very much like Hiro walks up, clad in black. It is Hiro, only from the future. Future Hiro tells Peter he looks different without his scar. He has a message for Peter...

Review

Lately, I have noticed that it is becoming commonplace for television shows to end one episode on a nifty cliffhanger only to start the next episode with a recap that alters how that cliffhanger went down. It happened on Battlestar Galactica last week and tonight it happened on Heroes. At the end of last week's installment, Claire was lying lifeless on a table while gloved hands pulled the tree branch from her skull.

A moment later, her eyes filled with life again and she gasped for breath. She looked at her chest pulled open and managed to get out "Oh sh-" before the episode cut to black. In tonight's episode, we see the coroner slice Claire open and pull out the branch. Then the coroner leaves and Claire comes back to life. Only this time, she looks around and says "Oh my god."

Obviously, when not used in the context of a cliffhanger, the scene loses some of its impact. And, Claire’s curse would not be allowed in full, only when broken off by the quick cut to black does it pass the network’s standards and practices department. But it still seems wrong to leave viewers with one scene and then show the same scene again, only different.

That aside, the episode managed to pull me in, once again. I made the mistake of catching a few seconds of the preview for this episode so I knew Claire was going to plow a car into a wall, with the quarterback riding shotgun. So that was not a shock. What was a shock, however, was Niki (or as I have referred to her until today, Nikki) beating the heck out of that guy in the elevator. Although, it was not really Niki. It was NotNiki, as I have christened her. Which begs the question: which Niki was it that showed up at Nathan’s door moments later? Niki or NotNiki?

And about that tattoo on her shoulder: apparently that symbol has been seen several times in earlier episodes. I never caught it until now, but given its prominence it must be important. Does it signify Niki’s transformation into NotNiki? Can normal Niki see it? Only time will tell. And really, what exactly is her superpower? Becoming really violent does not seem heroic to me.

A momentary aside: this show, like many, has an annoying tendency to go several episodes without naming characters. As far as I know, tonight was the first time the quarterback was referred to by name (Brody). And we still do not know what the name of Mr. Bennett’s mysterious sidekick is (apparently, he is credited as Mysterious Man). This makes it really hard to write summaries when you have to refer to characters as “Mohinder’s next door neighbor” or “Niki’s redhead friend.” Thankfully, I now know both their names: Eden and Tina.

Back to the episode, it was interesting to see how Isaac actually paints the future. His eyes glaze over and he sees himself in the lives of others. Does that mean he saw himself blow up in the nuclear blast that devastated New York City? That had to hurt.

As for Peter, I guess we know what his power is. He can temporarily absorb the powers of those around him. So he should now be able to pause time and move through time, having met up with FutureHiro (another name I just came up with -- I am so smart). Speaking of which, how far in the future is FutureHiro from if he can speak perfect English? As of this episode, we know Ando can speak English but Hiro not so much.

This show is exceeding my expectations every week. And it has been picked up for a full season by NBC. So I can only hope that it continues to exceed my expectations for the rest of the season.
