Yes! The return of Super NBC Announcer Man with a nifty recap of last week's episode. And now, a new episode begins.

In New York City, Peter and that mysterious invisible British fellow (whose name is apparently Claude) walk down a crowded sidewalk. Claude is stealing things left and right as the two chat. Peter needs to learn how to handle all the powers he is absorbing or else he just might explode. The first lesson: can Peter retain an ability when not in the vicinity the person from whom that power originates? The lesson starts with Claude snatching a purse from a woman, handing it to Peter, and running off. Peter is soon visible again.

Poor Niki, unable to convince the psychologist that Jessica is dangerous. She is cuffed and a Taser is readily available on the table. Plus, there is a metronome clacking away, back and forth, black and forth. The psychologist tells Niki to focus and they begin to talk about Niki's childhood. Apparently, Jessica could play the piano rather well. And then Jessica is free.

In Odessa, we see Mr. Bennett discover a living, breathing Sylar all over again. He gets slammed against the wall, his horn-rimmed glasses falling off his face. Sylar pulls something out off the back of his head, takes Mr. Bennett's wallet and then leaves, turning the lights off with a twitch. Sylar teases Mr. Bennett, showing him his own driver's license, complete with home address. Mr. Bennett pounds on the glass separating him from Sylar, yelling at the top of his lungs. With another twitch of his hand, Sylar unlocks the door and steps out into light, leaving Mr. Bennett locked in his own prison.

Isaac answers a knock at his door. It is Simone, who returns his keys. She asks to see his new paintings and pulls a tarp off a canvas before Isaac can stop her. It is a view of the city, destroyed, from the viewpoint of her father's building. Simone needs Isaac to find Peter but every time Isaac tries to paint Peter, nothing shows up. But Isaac knows Peter will be responsible for the destruction of New York City and he will do whatever it takes to stop him (and keep Simone safe). As Simone walks away, Isaac asks her to keep the keys. She picks up them up and walks out.

Claire tries to convince her mother to let her (and Zach) skip school to go to the aquarium to see the manatees. In reality, however, they are off to Kermit to find Claire's birth mother. The deception has to be perfect: nobody can know.

In Long Island, Hiro's father takes a look at the painting Hiro was carrying. He is an angry man, notes Ando, a man who does not like waffles and a man who wants his only son to return to the family business. Papa Nakamura wants Hiro to return to Japan and promises to make his son an executive vice president. Hiro's destiny, according to Papa Nakamura, is to replace his father as head of the company. But Hiro knows he has another destiny. The painting will get him Takezo Kensei's sword and the sword will stop the destruction of New York City.

In disgust, Papa Hiro rips the canvas apart.

A pair of guards burst into the room where Niki and the psychiatrist were having their little chat. The room has been turned upside down. Niki is sprawled on the floor, the table is knocked over, and the psychiatrist is covered with nasty Taser burns. Niki begs to be taken back to her cell and one of the guards (the one with the broken nose) is more than happy to oblige. He hits her over the head with his nightstick.

Claude laughs at Peter's close call with the police but Peter knows Nathan will be upset the police know who he is. However, Claude knows that Peter has to cut his connections with his family in order to fully realize his abilities. Claude hates people. But Peter likes Simone. So, Peter and Claude head off to spy on Simone.

His eyes that crazy shade of white (mother of pearl, perhaps), Isaac paints madly. The finished painting is a taxi cab, seen from above. He looks at another canvas and is disturbed by whatever it is he sees.

Speaking of canvases, Hiro and Ando look over the pieces of the painting. Hiro's sister Kimiko asks their father to let him have a shot at talking to the black sheep of the family. Hiro apologizes for bringing shame to the family but insists that the family does not need him. But there are problems at Yamagoto and some of the stockholders are upset that Papa Nakamura cannot control his own son. Hiro must give up his dream of saving the world in order to save his family.

Ando tells Hiro that returning to Japan might be a good idea. His powers are gone and they have no way of getting the sword. Maybe Hiro's sister was right. She is smart, after all. Hiro smiles widely. His sister is smart, yes she is.

Claire and Zach find the home of Meredith Gordon (Claire's birth mother) in a trailer park. Not exactly what Claire was hoping for. Seeing that his friend is worried, Zach more or less abandons her, so that she will have to talk to her birth mother. Haltingly, Claire knocks on the door. It opens and the two embrace.

Mr. Muggles finds Sylar in Claire's room and the two are introduced. Mrs. Bennett calls for her dog, having only just returned home. Sylar picks up the dog and heads downstairs. Mrs. Bennett’s arms are full with grocery bags and she is shocked to find Sylar standing in her kitchen. But Sylar, that sly dog, charms the pants of Mrs. Bennett, explaining that he was delivering something for Mr. Bennett and saw the dog out in the street. Mrs. Bennett believes the whole spiel.

(after a commercial break)

Mrs. Bennett brings Sylar a drink and wonders who left the door open for Mr. Muggles. Sylar manages to work Claire into the conversation and gets himself an invitation to dinner. It is the least Mrs. Bennett can do, after all. She plans on calling her husband right away to let him know they will have dinner guests.

A bruised and bloodied Mr. Bennett stares out the window of his little cell.

Meredith and Claire stare at each other for an awkward moment before Meredith breaks the silence. She thinks her daughter is so beautiful and regrets missing so much of Claire's life. But Meredith was certain nothing could have survived the fire so she never considered the fact that her daughter was out there somewhere. She offers Claire a drink and begins talking about her own life. But the lovely Kodak moment is interrupted by Claire's phone. It is her mother, checking up on her. Meredith seems let down knowing that Claire has not told her parents where she really is. And then Claire announces she knows how she survived the fire.

She picks up a large kitchen knife and slices her forearm. It bleeds but good and then quickly heals. Claire begs Meredith to say something. With a smile, Meredith holds out her hand and it bursts into flame. Like mother, like daughter.

Back at the homestead, Mrs. Bennett works on dinner while she chats with Sylar about Claire. But the relationship sours when Mrs. Bennett notices that Sylar is taking quite an interest in Claire. Worried, Mrs. Bennett tries to phone her husband again but Sylar flicks the phone against a wall. When Mrs. Bennett tries to run, Sylar knocks her into a glass case against a wall. He towers over her and holds out his hand. Just then, the front door bursts open. Mrs. Bennett rushes in, gun drawn, and fires a round directly into Sylar's chest. The Haitian is right behind Mr. Bennett and rushes off after Sylar.

(after a commercial break)

Mr. Bennett comforts his distraught wife. The Haitian returns and shakes his head. Sylar must have gotten away. The Haitian kneels down and works his magic on Mrs. Bennett.

As they walk out the door together, Meredith asks Claire to stay for dinner. But Claire needs to be getting home. Before she leaves, she asks about her father. Meredith offers to explain it all next time. Zach honks the horn and taps his watch. Meredith takes off a necklace and gives it to Claire.

Simone lets herself into Isaac's studio and calls out. He is nowhere to be found. But she spies the painting of the destroyed city, only now, she is standing with Isaac. She heads to the roof and finds Isaac there. He thinks the roof has something to do with whatever is happening. Simone would just like to know how the pigeon's get up there. The painting is the future Isaac is hoping for, a future that will be destroyed because Isaac cannot stop it. But Simone knows that Isaac has his gift for a reason: she believes he can make the future, not just paint it.

The two are not alone on the roof. Claude and Peter are watching them.

After a round of bows, Hiro announces he is returning to the business. His first decision? Consolidate management. His sister is shocked that he would do something so stupid. He sarcastically asks what she would do and she rattles off a list of smart decisions. Hiro is trying to prove to his father that Kimiko is the one his father needs to run the family business. She is the one with the head for business, not Hiro. And then there is more bowing.

Niki sits dejectedly in her cell. The door opens and the guard with the broken nose tosses her a package. She is going home. Malski, Linderman's creepy goon who spoke with D.L. in an earlier episode, explains that all charges against her have been dropped due to the confession of a man on death row. Niki is desperate to stay locked up but that is not her call. She is going home.

Still on the roof, an angry and dejected Peter discusses what they just saw with Claude. Peter thinks Claude took far too much amusement and the two start arguing. Peter thinks Claude is a hermit, Peter thinks Claude knows nothing. And then Claude throws Peter off the building. He lands atop a taxi with a piece of metal impaled through his chest. But he opens his eyes, pulls himself off the roof of the taxi and manages to stay standing. Looking back up the building he realizes what just happened.

(after a commercial break)

Peter sits against the taxi until Claude shows up. He jumps to his feet and slams Claude into the side of the building. Thirty stories is a long way to fall in order to realize his abilities. But Peter did it. He saw Claire's face in his mind right before he hit the ground. Peter thinks he has ra and then he starts to lose it. So Claude punches him.

Back in his studio, Isaac paints. This time, he paints a half-invisible Peter lying against the side of a taxi. He rings up Mr. Bennett with the news and learns that Sylar is escaped. But Peter is still in the city, he thinks, just a little invisible. To Mr. Bennett, this means that an old friend (Claude) is not quite as dead as he should be.

Hiro says goodbye to his father (who still does not approve of Hiro's mission), even going as far as to give his father a big ole hug. His sister calls him insane before hugging him as well. Ando tries to get in on the hugging action but all he gets is a bow. Still, he thinks Kimiko is starting to like him.

Micah knocks on his mother's door and asks about playing Scrabble. But the woman in the room is Jessica, not Niki. Niki is stuck behind a mirror.

Claire and Zach finally make it home and confront her mother. Thanks to the Haitian, Mrs. Bennett does not remember their conversation that morning and thinks her daughter ditched school. And for some reason she has a nasty headache. Claire offers to finish dinner and her mother heads upstairs to lie down. Then she spots a piece of glass and picks it up. She catches her father's eye and gives him a bright smile.

Meredith calls up someone on the phone and announces that their daughter just found her. And Claire's daddy is none other than Nathan Petrelli. That guy really sleeps around.

Review

Things are really starting to come together for our heroes. This episode was fantastic, and not just because Jessalyn Gilsig was in it. Not just because Sulu was in it. And not just because of the shocking reveal (shocking to people like me who do not watch promos) at the end. It was fantastic because characters and the series are moving forward. Claire is moving forward, having finding her mother and learning that her mother has an ability like hers. Peter is moving forward, a little, and learning to control his abilities. Isaac is moving forward, working to save the girl he loves. And Hiro is moving forward again, after stalling for quite a while, having convinced his father to give his sister a shot at the top of the family business.

I really have to feel sorry for Mrs. Bennett. Her mind must be so full of holes from the countless times her husband has had her memory wiped. Does she realize all the time that is missing or does she just think she is forgetful? Last episode she was worried that Lyle was forgetting things. Maybe it is time for her to start worrying about herself. More importantly, she has to get rid of that annoying dog and stop being so nice to random strangers who claim to work for her husband and are creepily obsessed with her teenage daughter. To be fair, she caught on after Sylar mentioned Claire a few dozen times. And at least she tried to get away, so that is something.

I wonder why Linderman wanted Niki out of prison. She has proven helpful in the past, of course, but that does little to explain all the work he had to go to getting her cleared of the charges. And now that Niki is stuck on the wrong side of a mirror, what is going to happen to her family? Will Jessica being a good mother to Micah and a good wife to D.L.? Or will she start killing people and do all sorts of nasty things? At least she has a sexy tattoo of a strange symbol that is connected to all these people with special abilities.

Speaking of abilities, good on Peter for starting to realize his potential (I think I have used that phrase far too many times in this recap/review). Claude is an interesting character and has done wonders for Peter. Maybe throwing him off a very, very tall building was not the smartest idea, but it worked. The question of how Peter will control his abilities still remains, though. Should he become a withdrawn rock like Claude or should he remember all the people he met whose powers he absorbed? The one thing he should not do is think about the guy who will make him explode. Because that would be bad. And how often is Claude going to be around to punch him in the face?

One thing this episode proved, to me at least, is that any episode not featuring the adventures of Matt Parkman is a better episode than any episode featuring Matt Parkman. He seems so much like a character that was tacked on after the pilot had been shot. Was he in the pilot? Nope. Has he done anything important? Nope. So maybe he should run into Sylar and get his head sliced open. Also, I did not miss Mohinder.
