Summary

Before the recap begins, a quick refresher on the characters:

Niki - the woman who takes off her clothes and sees herself in the mirror
Peter - the nurse who thinks he can fly, Nathan's brother
Isaac - the druggie who can paint the future
Hiro - the businessman who can stop time
Claire - the indestructible cheerleader
Simone - the dying man's daughter
Micah - Nikki's genius son
Nathan - a politician and Peter's brother
Mohinder - the professor whose father was killed for his research
Matt – the police officer who hears voices

After another special recap by Super NBC Narration Man, the episode began.

Back home, a stilly bloody Claire asks her father if he is mad at her. Mr. Bennett gets his daughter a damp cloth and then admits he has something to tell her. He knew about her ability long before she did and he only wanted to protect her. He has even done some things he is not proud of to keep her safe. All he wanted was a normal life for his daughter. Claire realizes that Jackie died because the man thought Jackie was Claire.

Claire admits that her brother Lyle and Zach know about her ability (her mother does not). Mr. Bennett says he will talk to Lyle and asks Claire to talk to Zach.

Matt and Audrey (the FBI agent) are on the case and hot on the trail of Sylar. The clearing where Eden and Mysterious Goon captured the wounded Sylar is covered with evidence markers. One girl at the high school was killed but her skull was not removed. There was, however, an incision on her forehead that indicates Sylar was involved. However, Audrey does not believe the suspect in custody is Sylar.

Matt is popping handfuls of painkillers and Audrey calls him on it. Matt angrily replies that he is having headaches and that everything with Janice is complicated.

Nathan shows up to talk with his brother. As usual, he dropped everything to help Peter. The first thing Peter asks is why his brother destroyed the painting. Well, it showed Peter dead. And Peter realizes that he can duplicate powers from his brother, Isaac, Hiro and Claire but is still not sure if he can save the world or even New York City. As he turns away from Nathan, emotion clouding his face, he hears his brother telling him that, in fact, he cannot save the world. When he turns back around his brother is gone, replaced by Sylar. Creepy.

He wakes up.

D.L. gets shot. Inside the vehicle, Micah reacts. There is another shot. It misses D.L. and hits the car. Another shot. It punctures the front tire. Jessica tosses aside the rifle and heads across the road, determination on her face, a pistol in her hand.

Eden sits waiting for Mr. Bennett. She hands him a folder and tells him Sylar slept through the night. Mr. Bennett continues alone. Standing in front of what is presumably bulletproof glass he hits the lights and looks down on Sylar, who is sleeping in his cell. His powers, however, will not work. Mr. Bennett is interested in why Sylar has more than one ability but he also thinks Sylar is quite insane. Sylar threatens to take Claire's ability and reacts angrily when Mr. Bennett calls him Gabriel.

He turns off the lights and leaves. He talks on his cell phone to someone and then confronts Eden again. She wants to tell Sylar to kill himself despite their orders to keep him alive. Mr. Bennett seems interested but Mysterious Goon (who Eden explains is a mute) is waiting and Mr. Bennett walks off.

D.L. and Micah run through the woods, with D.L. pressing his wounded arm tight against his chest. They are doing their best to hide the direction they are heading, going as far as to backtrack in their own footsteps. Micah is sure it was not the police who shot his father; the police would have to announce themselves before opening fire. They come across a cabin and D.L. puts his hand through the door, unlocking it. He finds some rags to use as bandages and asks Micah for help.

Micah knows who shot his father but tries to convince D.L. it was Jessica, not Niki. D.L. starts to reply but then slumps over, unconscious. Micah helplessly shakes his father's body, begging him to wake up.

Audrey and Matt begin to interrogate Peter. They know he did not kill the girl. The blood found on his body was his own but he has no injuries. Audrey has Matt try to read Peter's thoughts and manages to get the phrase "save the cheerleader" before Peter manages to duplicate Matt's ability and everything gets confusing. Peter is stunned that Claire is not being protected and Audrey and Matt realize they should go find her. Peter is left alone again.

Isaac returns to his father's apartment in New York City and finds a note from Eden welcoming him home. He gets on the phone with the authorities (FBI, maybe) after faxing them a list of names (presumably from his father's computer). Nine of the people on that list are dead already but the authorities are doing nothing.

Eden walks in on Isaac to find him sketching and sober. The drawings are not predicting the future but they are drawings. Isaac is happy to be drawing again. Eden tells him that Peter saved Claire, using his paintings, and Isaac is excited to think that the future can be changed, including the destruction of New York City.

Hiro is depressed. He could not save Charlie and he could not save the cheerleader. He is in Texas with Ando, at Claire's high school. And since they did not save the cheerleader, the world is doomed. They decide to continue forward, to find Peter Petrelli. Hiro's cell phone rings. It is Isaac, who says they need to meet.

Claire talks with Audrey while Matt watches through a one-way mirror, trying to listen in on Claire's thoughts. Mr. Bennett is sitting with his daughter. Claire tells Audrey about trying to save Jackie and then running away, leaving Jackie. Audrey asks some leading questions in the hope that Matt will hear the real answers but Claire makes no mention of Sylar having any strange abilities or of her own ability. The interview ends and everyone heads out into the hall. Matt walks up and introduces himself to Mr. Bennett, promising to do everything he can to get Sylar. Mr. Bennett and Claire leave.

Matt explains that he was unable to hear anything from Claire's mind. It was not exactly silence but more like some sort of interference. He has heard it once before when he was in the bar moments before he passed out. The two walk off. Mysterious Goon is standing behind a corner and walks off down the hallway in the opposite direction.

Jessica runs through the woods. She finds D.L.’s bloody jacket. Suddenly, Jessica is gone and Niki is back, worried about what she did. She drops the jacket and starts to run but trips and sprawls into the mud in front of a river. Looking into the river she looks up and sees Jessica standing there. The two argue, with Jessica telling Niki that she does what Niki is not strong enough to do. Micah's voice can be heard calling for his mother and either Jessica or Niki (or both) respond. But when one of them begins running again, it is definitely Jessica. And she has a pistol.

Peter is back in his regular cell when Claire and Mr. Bennett enter. Peter is overjoyed to see Claire and Mr. Bennett thanks Peter and hopes he can repay Peter for saving his daughter in the future. Peter seems to be in pain but brushes it off. Claire asks if she can have a moment with Peter and Mr. Bennett leaves the room. Claire asks how long Peter has known and Peter realizes that Claire has an unusual ability as well. She thought she was the only one. She jokes about having died but is shocked to learn that Peter had no idea he was going to heal when he jumped off the building. It was, in Peter's words, a stupid thing to do.

As Claire walks out, she turns and tells Peter he is her hero.

Jessica runs through the woods and meets up with Micah. She draws her gun and heads for the cabin but D.L. is waiting for her with a shovel. He knocks her down but she gets right back up and the two start fighting. Micah screams at them to stop and grabs Jessica's arm. She shoves him into a pile of rocks and he cries out in pain. D.L. manages to get to his feet and stumbles to Micah. Jessica stops and stares and then joins D.L. next to Micah. Only it is Niki again, not Jessica.

Claire meets up with Zach and tells her the latest gossip: everyone knows someone died at the high school and everyone knows it was Jackie. He brought the tapes and Claire quickly stomps on them. They have a Kodak Moment, with Claire telling Zach he is her best friend of all time and even including one of those friendly girl kicks to the shin. Zach apologizes for getting her to go to the prom and almost getting her killed but Claire knows he was only trying to be a friend. She has to rush off but not before making sure Zach will not talk about her ability. He promises to remain silent.

Hiro and Ando wait at a bus station. Isaac gets off the bus and is greeted by a happy Hiro, who flashes the Vulcan hand symbol. Isaac is stunned at the comic book Hiro shows him because it has not gone to the printer yet. Hiro tells Isaac about the future he saw, with the bomb going off and Isaac being dead on the floor with head cut open. Isaac tells them that the man who cuts open skulls is taken care of. Ando is happy the brain man is in custody and explains that Hiro lost a good friend.

Isaac opens his sketch book to reveal several sketches of Hiro, Charlie and Ando at the diner. He drew it two days ago. He still has the ability to draw the future. Hiro shows him the last panel in the comic book. It is the same mural that Isaac painted on the floor of his studio. He tells Hiro and Ando that recently he drew a picture of an exploding man. Hiro asks the obvious question: how do you stop an exploding man?

Claire returns home to find Lyle sitting in the kitchen alone. She asks if their father talked to him about her "thing" but Kyle has no idea what she is talking about. He never talked to their father, who was supposed to pick him up after practice, and cannot remember how he got home from school. Claire is stunned.

D.L. and Niki argue about Jessica, with Niki certain that Jessica will return to hurt Micah. When D.L. stops to help Micah, Niki disappears.

At the parking lot where D.L. was shot, Niki walks up to a police officer and asks him to arrest her for murder.

Matt and Audrey sit together at a stakeout. Audrey absentmindedly thinks that Matt can be cute and then realizes that Matt heard her say it. She tells him he cannot listen to her thoughts and tells him to call his wife so he can go back home. Matt thinks that would make him a chump and Audrey thinks not calling would make him a chump. And then they see Mr. Bennett walking out of the building they are staking out. Matt recognizes Mysterious Goon walking next to Mr. Bennett and tries with all his might to hear something, anything. All he gets is a nosebleed and one word: Sylar.

Claire stands with her hands in her pockets at her school's football field, waiting for Zach to ride up on his bike. She tells him about what happened with Kyle not being able to remember anything about Claire's ability. But Zach does not remember anything, either. In fact, the last time he remembers talking to Claire was in the sixth grade and thinks the whole conversation is a joke. Claire, shocked, realizes that "they" got to Zach already. She runs off.

Mr. Bennett walks into the room with the big window and turns on the lights, revealing Sylar sitting on his bed staring at the wall. He slides some food into Sylar's chamber and tells Sylar they are going to take him apart like one of his watches. They want to know what makes him tick.

Hiro and Ando stand behind a canvas watching Isaac. When Isaac begins thinking he cannot paint, Hiro tells him to concentrate. Isaac gets those white, glazed-over eyes and starts painting.

Mr. Bennett gets a call on his cell. It is Claire and she is distraught. She asks if her father remembers their conversation from the night before (he does) and explains that Zach and Lyle have no memory of her ability. Mr. Bennett asks where Claire is (in her room) and says he is on his way.

After hanging up, Claire notices someone standing in her room. It is Mysterious Goon. He grabs her, covering her mouth with his hand. He tells her he works for her father and was sent to make her forget, just like he was sent to make Lyle and Zach forget, and Claire's mother time and time again. But Claire needs to remember. Can she keep a secret?

Isaac, Hiro and Ando stare at Isaac's finished painting, utterly confused. They all thought Isaac could only paint the future but the canvas clearly shows Hiro fighting a very large, very angry looking green creature that looks like a T-Rex. Hiro worries he might step on a bug and change the future (playing on the famous short story about going back in time and killing a butterfly and changing the future).

Mohinder gets a call. It is Eden. She tells him she lied to him but will explain everything soon. But she has to make things right. She has to kill the man who murdered Papa Suresh. She hangs up.

Eden walks into the room with the window and turns on the light. She tells Sylar that she lived across from Papa Suresh. Sylar realizes that she knew what was going on and let it happen. In some sense, she helped him. But she is not planning on helping him now. She has a pistol with her and tells Sylar that she is going to give it to him. But then Sylar stands up and suddenly Eden is crashing through the window and Sylar's hand is around her throat. Bleeding and hurting, Eden still has a grasp on the pistol and tries to turn it towards Sylar.

He gently reminds her that it will not hurt him and then waxes poetic on stealing her power. Before he can, however, Eden turns the gun on herself and pulls the trigger, splattering herself on the shattered remnants of the window.

Once again, Nathan walks up to Peter's cell and tells him. Peter collapses. When he wakes up, he is wearing different clothing and is in New York City. But the city is abandoned. Cars sit empty, the doors wide open. Peter walks through the street. He sees a bicycle, its wheels still spinning. He sees a sign asking people to vote. Suddenly, he sees people. He sees Mohinder. He sees Matt. He sees D.L., Micah and Niki. He sees Claire running towards him, stopping and looking at him. He sees Hiro and Ando. He sees his brother. He sees Simone and then Isaac grabbing her.

And he sees his hands glowing, his body glowing. He feels himself explode. And then he is back in Texas lying on the ground, looking up at his brother. He tells Nathan that it is his entire fault and then apparently stops breathing. Nathan calls his name, slapping his face, trying to get him to respond.

Review

Sweet googley moogley! What an episode. So much happened. Poor Claire! Poor Peter! Poor Niki! Poor everyone! So much happened in this one I really have no idea where to start. The dinosaur Hiro will fight? The fact that Peter had a vision in which he blew up? The fact that Peter had a vision at all? All the characters starting to come together? Eden blowing her own head off? So much happened.

Okay, so Mohinder sent a list of names to Quantico. Which could mean he sent it to the Marines or the FBI. In any case, they ignored the list, it seems. But they should have tracked Mohinder down once it became obvious that a whole bunch of people on this list are popping up dead. That would seem like a pretty strange thing to have a random guy fax to the Marines or the FBI, eh?

Moving on. What exactly is Claire's brother's name? It sounds so very much like Lyle but could be Kyle. My closed captioning actually used both Lyle AND Kyle. Not a terribly important question, I admit. But I want to know. Maybe his name is Kyle Lyle Bennett, or Lyle Kyle Bennett. Who knows. Who cares? I will call him Lyle.

So Lyle and Zach had their memories wiped by Mysterious Goon. Lyle lost, what, half an hour? Zach lost two weeks. And Claire lost her best friend. Heartbreaking. But more importantly, Claire is starting to learn the truth about her father. And we learned that Mysterious Goon can speak and was supposed to wipe Claire's mind but for some reason thinks it is more important that she knows. What is that about?

And what is Peter's vision about? Why did he have a vision? And what are the odds that all the characters would be on that one street in New York City, huh? Come on. Totally fake. Still, the vision left us with one very important question: is Peter the cause of the explosion in New York City? Or will he die in his brother's arms in Texas and leave saving the world to Hiro and the others?

The next episode is not until January 22nd, 2007. So we have plenty of time to ponder these, and other, questions. And there are so many.
