Huzzah! The return of Super NBC Announcer Man with a super recap of what has taken place so far and a stunning surprise: the episode is set five years in the future

In Isaac's loft in New York City, Hiro and Ando stumble upon a massive timeline of events strung through the room. They hear a noise and Hiro draws his sword. Suddenly, Future Hiro is there, with his own sword. Hiro and Ando learn that the bomb -- better known as Sylar -- blew up in New York City, despite Super Hiro thinking he had things figured out. [At this point, my NBC affiliate froze momentarily; I may have missed a startling revelation - Ed.] Future Hiro has to get Hiro and Ando back to their time so they can stop Sylar.

Using the timeline, Future Hiro points to the moment when Sylar should have died. Instead, he regenerated thanks to Claire's powers of regeneration. However, if Peter succeeded in saving the cheerleader, Sylar should never have taken her ability. Hiro explains that he cannot go back; if he uses his power he and Ando can show up anywhere, anytime. And then a bunch of goons in suits bust in and capture Hiro. Ando and Future Hiro manage to escape. The goons are led by Matt and the Haitian who are working for Homeland Security. Future Hiro is apparently a terrorist and the Haitian has a way of blocking his ability.

The only person who is powerful enough to help them is Peter. They leave for Las Vegas, courtesy of Future Hiro's ability.

(After a commercial)

In Las Vegas, Future Hiro leads Ando to Peter's girlfriend. They sit and watch a stripper named Jessica perform (yes, apparently THAT Jessica). She sees Future Hiro watching her and she slips off to talk to them (for $500). But she wants nothing to do with Future Hiro -- the war is over and they lost. She does tell Future Hiro that Bennett is probably still in Texas.

Jessica goes to the bar. Peter appears there and asks what Future Hiro wanted. Peter has a nasty scar. They watch a special "America Remembers" on television. We learn that Micah was killed in Sylar's blast. The two do some kissing and Jessica heads back to the stage. Peter takes a drink while glaring at Sylar's image on the television screen. He turns it off, apparently telekinetically.

At the Homeland Security office (or maybe the basement), Hiro is interrogated by Matt as the Haitian looks on. Matt is confused by the fact that Hiro has no memory of the various crimes he has supposedly committed over the past five years. Still, he is sure he will get Hiro to reveal all his secrets. Matt calls up President Nathan Petrelli, who is worried that Hiro might be an illusion or a trick. Matt promises he can get the job done.

In the Oval Office, President Petrelli discusses Hiro's capture with Professor Mohinder Suresh. They discuss a pact they made five years ago to eliminate the danger of people like Sylar. But they have made almost no progress in reversing. They cannot breed, they are tracked, and yet their population is increasing. There might be a potential solution -- extinction. Mohinder is aghast at the idea of genocide. But President Petrelli wants to put an end to this, despite the fact that he is one of them himself, a secret Mohinder has kept all these years.

Mohinder admits that even given decades, he could probably not reverse the mutation. Time for Plan B.

Back at Homeland Security, Matt beats on Hiro. He is certain Hiro has plans for the anniversary. Matt's phone rings. Mohinder is somewhere he probably should not be.

Mohinder is at Isaac's studio, looking over the timeline.

At the Primatech paper factory, Mr. Bennett and Hana are helping a family (whose son has an ability) to start a new life. The family leaves, and Mr. Bennett then declines to help Future Hiro and Ando. But when Ando appeals to him, bringing up the fact that Peter saved Claire's life, Mr. Bennett changes his mind. He will do what he can.

Mohinder explains the purpose of the timeline to Matt. They theorize that perhaps Hiro plans on going back in time. Mohinder remembers that Peter once told him about meeting a man on the subway who told him "Save the cheerleader, save the world."

In Midland, Texas, Claire works in a diner, with a thick Texas accent and dark brown hair. Although now her name is Sandy. She watches President Petrelli on the television, commenting to a coworker that the President looks old enough to be her father. Her coworker, Andy, is apparently her boyfriend and they apparently have plans. Andy mentions that "the creepy guy with glasses" is back. The creepy guy is Mr. Bennett, who tells Claire that she needs to leave as soon as possible. But she has no intention of leaving. She is getting married to Andy and wants a normal life. And all Mr. Bennett wants is for his daughter to be safe. They watch a report on the news about some 200+ folks with abilities being rounded up by Homeland Security, thanks to the Linderman Act.

Back at the Primatech Building, Future Hiro explains the starts of a plan: D.L. can phase them through the walls and Candice can put her shape-shifting abilities to good use. Ando wants to know what has become of him in the future but Future Hiro is reluctant. He cracks a joke about the time/space continuum and Ando is pleased to see that a glimmer of his old friend still exists. Future Hiro is about to share something important with Ando when he is suddenly tasered. Matt and a bunch of goons swarm into the room, grabbing Ando. Matt is shocked to find another Hiro and realizes that Hiro can time travel.

Then Peter shows up, turning visible and freezing time. He gets Future Hiro and Ando out of the room before time starts up again, leaving Matt and his goons alone, angry and frustrated.

(After a commercial)

Mr. Bennett returns to his office to find the place trashed. He called Matt because the two have an understanding: Mr. Bennett lets Matt know about the dangerous folks and Matt lets Mr. Bennett save the harmless ones. They both have dangerous children -- Mr. Bennett was able to take care of Janice and Matt's child. They have a touching moment and then Matt pulls a gun on Mr. Bennett and manages to pull Claire's location from his mind before killing him.

At the diner, Claire suggests elopement to Andy. It might sound crazy but the gal has her reasons. Andy agrees and goes off to gather a few things. A happy Claire offers coffee to customers before coming across Matt.

Mohinder talks to Hiro about that day when Peter was visited by someone from the future. He realizes that Hiro is trying to change the course of history and stop Sylar.

At the strip club, Peter brings Ando a blanket. Future Hiro is still unconscious. Peter tells Ando that he died during the explosion in New York City. And when Ando died, optimistic Hiro died as well. Future Hiro wants to save his friend. Then Jessica shows up, sees Ando, and turns to leave.

Mohinder and President Petrelli look over the timeline at Isaac's. If Hiro can kill Sylar, the past can be changed. Still, President Petrelli is more concerned with the present: he will lie to the American people and the world that Mohinder came up with a way to reverse the abilities. Instead, they will all be killed. And the world will unite. Mohinder promises that he can be trusted when Matt shows up to reveal that there are two Hiros. They have captured the younger one. Mohinder is charged with killing him. And Matt reveals that he found Claire.

President Petrelli thought Claire was dead. He tries to give her a hug but she pushes him away. She is livid -- he is the reason the world hates people like them. The President would rather think that they are special. In response, Claire argues that he has no right to say who is special and who is not. The President leans in close and explains that he has met an awful lot of special people in his life and has accumulated an awful lot of power. Including a woman named Candice who helped him win the presidency.

But now, all he wants to do is get rid of all the competition. Claire turns and takes a few steps before she is stopped dead in her tracks. The President points a finger at her and, with a buzz in the air, blood begins to trickle down Claire's face. President Petrelli is, in fact, President Sylar. Claire breathes his name as Sylar reveals himself. He is overjoyed, having waited an awful long time for this moment.

At the strip club, Ando plays with Future Hiro's sword. Future Hiro wakes up and learns that Peter told Ando of his fate. In another room, Jessica and Peter argue about Peter helping Future Hiro and Ando. It turns out Jessica is actually Niki who has been using the Jessica personae to mask her sorrow for the past five years. She yells at Peter, demanding to know why he has to take care of everyone. He replies that he was the one who exploded in New York City; he was the one who killed Micah. Nathan lied about Sylar exploding to protect his brother. He is issued an ultimatum by Niki/Jessica: if he walks out the door, he does not come back. He walks.

At the ruins of the bombing, President Petrelli leads a moment of silence for all those lost five years ago.

At the Homeland Security building, Mohinder pulls a syringe from his briefcase. The Haitian watches. Hiro does not seem to know exactly what is going on.

At the strip club, Jessica throws a glass at the television screen showing President Petrelli's speech.

At Homeland Security, the gang shows up. Alarms go off.

Matt and Mohinder look up.

The battle commences. Future Hiro and Peter make quick work of the guards. Upstairs, their powers will be blocked by the Haitian. And potentially Matt and a lot of goons.

Mohinder prepares to kill Hiro.

President Petrelli announces the cure.

Future Hiro steps into an elevator.

Matt readies himself for the attack.

Mohinder walks towards Hiro, the syringe in his hand.

Matt and the guards are ready to shoot on sight. The elevator door opens. It is empty.

Hiro pleads to be allowed to go back in time to stop the explosion. The Haitian holds him down. Mohinder injects the Haitian and frees Hiro, showing him the 9th Wonder comic that shows how things will go down. Future Hiro, Peter and Ando bust in through a door. Ando is overjoyed to see Hiro. Mohinder is shocked to see Peter. Future Hiro prepares to go back in time, bringing Hiro and Ando with him, when he is shot in the back by Matt. Peter shuts the door before Matt or his goons can get in, but the damage has been done.

At the ceremony, President Petrelli lights a memorial pyre. Matt calls him, explaining that the Haitian is dead and Peter is keeping him from getting to the Hiros. The President suddenly flies off, leaving the crowds stunned.

An arm reaches through the door and pulls Peter through it. It is the President, who orders Matt to get inside and finish things. Sylar reveals himself to Peter and the two face off, power erupting from their hands. As Mohinder desperately tries to keep the door shut, Ando begs Hiro to teleport them and Hiro closes his eyes.

They find themselves atop a building in New York City, overlooking the skyline in all its non-blown up glory. Hiro holds the copy of 9th Wonder that shows him killing Sylar.

Review

I was very excited about this episode before it aired; despite only catching bits and pieces from the promotional spots aired on NBC (I make a point of trying to shy away from watching promos). Very excited indeed. Oh, and it delivered. I am always hesitant when I hear that an episode will jump to the future, or show an alternate reality because the dreaded "reset button" is practically inevitable. No matter what manner of shocking and enlightening events unfold, at the end of the episode things are back where they started and the status quo is upheld. At the same time, episodes like this can be very entertaining. And "Five Years Gone" was quite entertaining.

All of the characters looked suitably older, or at least a little grizzled by age, and we learned just enough to keep us terrified at the prospect of this future coming to pass for our heroes, but not too much to make us want to see more. Obviously, the war mentioned by several characters can be taken as a parallel to the "war on terrorism" currently raging, with Homeland Security tracking down "terrorists" and all that jazz. But it reminded me more of the "Days of Future Past" storyline from the X-Men comic book from 1981. In issues #141 and #142, the reader is shown a future in which mutants are hunted down and a character from the past is charged with keeping the horrific future from happening.

Like "Days of Future Past," this episode was incredibly well-done. It was obvious that Hiro and Ando were going to somehow manage to get back to their time in order to stop Sylar. The episode, then, was more about how they would accomplish this and what they would learn of the potential future. And we learned a whole bunch. I for one was shocked to learn that President Petrelli was actually Sylar, mostly because the genocide idea seemed like something that Nathan would consider. I was a bit disappointed that we were not given a chance to see how Claire's regenerative abilities would fare against Sylar cutting into her skull.

I was also disappointed at how Matt turned out to be such a manipulative, downright evil person, willing to turn on anyone and everyone to save himself. And I was surprised the Haitian would willingly work alongside Homeland Security given how he felt about keeping Claire safe. I could have done without Jessica/Niki in this episode. It seemed like the writers wanted to show every character in the future regardless of how well they fit into the story. And Jessica/Niki did not fit into the episode at all.

All told, "Five Years Gone" was a fun romp, connecting nicely to the scene on the subway in "Hiros" when Future Hiro told Peter to save Claire's life. However, I am not sure how that scene fits into the timeline. Did Future Hiro go back in time before or after Hiro and Ando showed up? The future shown in the episode was believed to have come to pass because Sylar was able to absorb Claire's ability and regenerate after Hiro stabbed him. But Claire was still alive -- presumably because Peter got Future Hiro's message -- and Sylar never got her ability. Plus, Peter was the one who exploded. So when did Future Hiro give the message to Peter? And how did Sylar survive Hiro's stabbing without Claire's ability?

These are the questions that always arise when television shows venture into the future.

Also, seeing Stana Katic as Hana again was nifty. What an accent that gal has.
