Before the recap begins, a quick refresher on the characters (with three recurring characters finally added):

Isaac – the druggie who can paint the future
Hiro – the businessman who can stop time
Claire – the indestructible cheerleader
Simone – the dying man's daughter
Micah – Nikki's genius son
Nathan – a politician and Peter's brother
Mohinder – the professor whose father was killed for his research
Matt – the police officer who hears voices
Mr. Bennet/Horned Rim Glasses – Claire's father, has many secrets
Ando – Hiro's partner in crime
The Haitian/Mysterious Goon – mostly mute, works for Mr. Bennett
Zach – Claire's friend
Audrey – the FBI agent working with Matt

No sign of Super NBC Announcer Man this week, only Mohinder recapping the last episode (for the most part). Poor Super NBC Announcer Man, never getting the recognition he deserves. And then the episode proper begins...

In New York City, Peter chases after a bearded man with the power of invisibility. The bearded man seems to know other people like Peter but has no interest in helping Peter find any answers. He threatens Peter and stalks off.

Niki gets an injection in her bum and passes out. She is left alone in her padded cell. The poor girl.

In Los Angeles, Matt and Janice play with Matt's ability to read thoughts. She keeps thinking things, he keeps telling her what she is thinking.

Mr. Bennett, in his "office" in Texas, looks over the latest results from tests being conducted on Sylar. They are pretty intense but Mr. Bennet tells the doctor to keep bringing Sylar back to life every time he codes (read: his heart stops).

Also in New York City, Ando argues with a parking attendant over his fee for one day's parking. He was two minutes over his allotted time and has to pay almost fifty dollars. Hiro, bless his heart, tries to turn back the clock to save his friend a few bucks but is unsuccessful. After Ando hands over the money, Hiro laments that his power is gone until he finds the sword. The two argue about sword as they walk to the car but stop suddenly when they notice a man standing next to the vehicle.

The man has a gun. Hiro and Ando turn and run but are confronted by another man who pulls up in a van, stops, gets out and glares at them. Hiro's whispered "Uh-oh" just might be an understatement.

Mohinder peers into a microscope but is interrupted by a knock at the door. It is Nathan Petrelli, who wants help finding his brother. Mohinder has been trying to contact Peter for two days. Nathan asks Mohinder if there is anything he can share vis-à-vis Peter’s situation. Mohinder shows him the list of thirty-six people Papa Suresh found with a genetic marker. Both Nathan and Peter are on it. Peter's ability is to sap up the abilities of others near him like a sponge. Nathan wonders if there is any way to stop Peter's power. Mohinder thinks there might be.

But Nathan does not want Mohinder finding or studying his brother, feeding into his paranoia. Mohinder knows that Peter is important and manages to convince Nathan to let him tag along.

Peter follows the invisible man and finds him on top of the building owned by Charles Deveraux. Peter finds it a little strange that the invisible man lives in the same building Peter used to work in. He begs for a way to control his power, he is afraid of exploding. But the invisible man just ignores everything Peter said and walks out.

Claire and Zach peer at Mr. Bennet's computer but can find nothing. Claire just does not believe that, there has to be something on the computer. But Zach is pretty sure anyone with the amount of secrets Mr. Bennet has would probably not hide anything on the family computer. Mr. Muggles begins barking and the two are quick to shut down the computer.

Mr. Bennet forgot his cell phone. Claire and Zach are able to come up with a cover story by saying they are lab partners working on a project about manatees. Mr. Bennet asks for a moment with his daughter and Claire tells Zach to wait in her room, reminding him where it is located. Claire is able to convince her father that she is disgusted by Zach, despite the fact that she remembers everything. Mr. Bennet gently suggests that she might enjoy working with Zach. They used to be friends, after all. Claire smiles.

After Mr. Bennet leaves, Claire joins Zach in her room. She decides to turn to the one person she knows can give her some real answers. She hangs a chime in her window, explaining to Zach that she was told to do so if she ever needed to get in contact with this person.

Matt tries to explain to Janice what happened to him and why he wants to track down the people responsible. Janice is just a tad bit skeptical and thinks (to her self) that he should contact the FBI. Overhearing her thoughts, Matt replies that the FBI thinks he is crazy. And he has to go in front of a review board in the morning so he heads to the bathroom to get

Hiro and Ando hide under a car and try to figure out why they are being chased. Is it the painting? Ando wants to surrender but Hiro will never give up. Unfortunately, the owner of the car they are under chooses that moment to leave the parking garage. Hiro and Ando are suddenly very, very out in the open. The van turns a corner and chases after them. Hiro manages to jump a fence but the men grab Ando.

Hiro climbs back over the fence and yells at the men. He offers himself, who is special, in trade for non-special Ando. But the men just grab Hiro and throw him in the van alongside Ando, who is shocked that his friend came back for him.

Waking up in her room, Niki finds another woman sitting on the floor with her. And her restraints are off. The woman is a psychiatrist. Niki begs to be sedated, worried that Jessica will reassert herself and do some damage. The psychiatrist tries to do her psychiatry thing, suggesting that Niki has multiple personalities. Again, Niki asks for another shot. The psychiatrist says no and leaves, taking the straight jacket with her.

D.L. talks on the phone with someone, discussing money. Micah stands in the doorway, listening. When his father hangs up, Micah asks after his lunchbox. It is in the car and the car is in the shop. Micah is not overly concerned because his father makes bad lunches. But D.L. is getting a little cranky and confronts Micah, insisting that he is doing the best he can. Micah reminds him that Niki managed to do a better job and then leaves for school.

Under the girders, Claire waits for the Haitian. He shows up and tells Claire how dangerous it was for her to contact him. She is having problems continually lying to her father and asks if the Haitian knows who her real parents are. He knows nothing about Claire's father but can tell Claire that her birth mother died in an explosion fourteen years ago. At least, that is what Mr. Bennett told the Haitian, who does not think Mr. Bennet was lying. He tells Claire to go home and forget about her real parents. He walks off, leaving Claire almost in tears.

Back at the house, Mrs. Bennett complains about the groomer doing a bad on Mr. Muggles. Mr. Bennet walks in and asks where Claire is (she is at the library doing research). But Mrs. Bennet thinks Claire is doing fine and Lyle is the one to worry about. He is getting rather absent-minded of late. Mrs. Bennet leaves and Mr. Bennet gets a call on his cell phone. Sylar is dead. He tells the doctor to prepare the body for shipping.

The doctor removes the straps from Sylar's body. That was a mistake because Sylar is still alive.

At a diner, Claire and Zach read up on an explosion that took place some fourteen years earlier in Kermit, Texas. A woman named Meredith Gordon and her baby were killed and Zach thinks that baby was Claire (who somehow survived). And maybe she has family somewhere in Kermit, Texas who knows who her father is.

The review board is not very open to Matt's report about Sylar and super-powers. One of the officers even mentally hopes that Matt will stick by his statement and get kicked out of the department. But Matt overhears this and recants his report. He is suspended from active duty for six months, pending another review, and asked to turn in his gun and badge.

He returns home and finds Janice upstairs. Those leaky pipes seem to have burst and water is everywhere. Matt asks for a wrench and crawls under the sink. It is probably time to call a plumber.

In the van, Hiro and Ando are finally able to get one of their captor's to talk. He knows all about Hiro's so-called ability and he works for someone with "real power" who wants Hiro to stop. The man offers them first-class tickets back to Tokyo. Ando is tempted but Hiro insists it is a test. He wants to meet the man's boss. The captor does not think the boss will like that.

At his apartment, Peter quickly packs a bag but pauses to look at a picture of himself and his brother. Nathan and Mohinder show up and try to convince Peter to stay. Mohinder wants to study him. But Peter wants to leave. Nathan threatens to have Peter incarcerated with a mental illness. Mohinder pulls back and Peter has a talk with his brother. He knows Nathan just wants to help him and agrees to stay and all that jazz.

But he was lying. He shoves Nathan out of the way and dashes out the door. Nathan and Mohinder are hot on his heels but when they get to the hallway, Peter is gone. And the guard Nathan had watching the door saw nothing. He notices that a window at the end of the hallway is open and assumes that Peter flew out. They all rush off to alert the airports, leaving Peter and the invisible man alone in the hallway (and invisible, obviously).

Peter and the invisible man talk things over in Peter's apartment. Despite his lack of interest in Peter during their earlier discussions, the man has decided that Peter may really be a threat. He makes vague mention of other people like Peter and then heads out to steal a cab, reminding Peter to come along.

Matt manages to stem the flow of water under the sink and gets the tap working. Janice, perched precariously on the tub, claps. Matt joins her and admits that he was suspended. He also thinks he is about to lose her marriage. She tells him that all is not lost, at least on the marriage front. They just have to trust one another. He says he can do that and they kiss. Janice asks him to read her thoughts once more. They are having a baby. Wee.

Niki wakes up in the padded cell to find D.L. walking through the wall. She is worried that he will get caught but D.L. is confident. She asks about Micah and D.L. admits he cannot take care of their son without her. He cannot take care of everything. Niki is pretty set on staying incarcerated for a long time and is counting on D.L. to take care of Micah. She tells him that Micah needs boundaries and a strong hand and orders him to leave.

On his way to school (hopefully) Micah spots an automated teller machine (ATM) outside a convenience store. He walks up to it and uses his ability (remember, he can connect with technology on a deep level) to have it dispense cash without a PIN number. With a big ole grin on his face, he takes out $500.

Claire lies on her bed looking through the phone book, talking to Zach on her cell phone. Her father knocks on the door and she quickly hangs up. Mr. Bennet comes bearing a book on manatees from a woman in accounting (who is married to a marine biologist). But Claire already has that book. Mr. Bennet sits down on the bed and asks his daughter if there is anything she wants to talk about. She admits that it might be time for her bear collection to "migrate" but that only gets her father talking about how he will always be there for her.

He walks out, leaving Claire close to tears again.

Niki sits down with the psychiatrist, explaining that she needs to be with her family and is willing to do whatever it takes. The psychiatrist wants to talk to Jessica which. After some argument, Niki laments and Jessica comes out to play.

When Micah finally comes home (maybe he was walking home from school) D.L. is furious. But he sits his son down and tells him that Niki is not coming home for a long time and that the two of them need to pull together. Micah admits he can try harder, gives his father a hug, and dumps a pile of cash out of his backpack. He has his own secret.

The van with Hiro and Ando comes to a stop and the man in the back gets out. Ando does not want to meet this boss but Hiro promises never to betray his friend. The van door opens again and Hiro is shocked to see his father standing in front of him. He gulps loudly.

Claire sits on her bed, calling everyone in the Kermit area with the last name of Gordon. This time, a woman answers the phone. Claire asks if the woman is related to Meredith Gordon. The woman seems a little shocked and asks how Claire knows about the name Meredith Gordon. Claire replies that she thinks she is Meredith's daughter. The woman explains that the child died in the fire and that Meredith only had the one child.

The screen splits as Claire explains she thinks she is Meredith's daughter, who did not die in the fire. Claire looks an awful lot like the woman on the other end of the phone, who lights a cigarette with flame that bursts from her fingers. That woman is Meredith Gordon. That woman is Claire's mother. Kodak moment, folks.

Mr. Bennet decides to take one final look at Sylar. But when he pulls back the sheet on the gurney he finds the doctor's rather mutilated body staring back at him. Suddenly, Sylar is standing next to him, very much alive. After a moment of silence, Sylar asks how Claire is doing.

Review

Ah, another week, another new episode of Heroes. This one seemed a little slow at first, with more character moments than startling revelations. Hiro and Ando's conversastion under the car in the parking garage was priceless, as was their earlier discussion about swords (see the quotes section). But it seems odd that they were able to hide from the various goons for so long before finally getting captured. And really, Hiro, is it really a good idea to be broadcasting your power to random strangers?

As for Claire, the poor girl is just about at the end of her tether. Lying to her father, frightened about what he is hiding from her, and just plain tired of her life. The only person who can possibly answer her questions is a mysterious Haitian who volunteers to wipe her memory. I wonder if the Haitian knew that Claire's birth mother had not died in the fire when he told her, or if he really believed Mr. Bennet had told him the truth. In any case, Claire and Zach are a resourceful duo and it looks like Claire has found her mom. And it looks like Claire's mother is played by Jessalyn Gilsig. Yay.

So now Micah has turned to crime, Matt and Janice are having a baby, Hiro's father is apparently some big bad boss, Sylar is alive and kicking, and Peter has found someone who might know a thing or two about his predicament. It sure seems like a lot happened in this episode, and certainly most of the characters are moving forward, but it also felt like there was a bit more filler in this episode than usual. Last week's episode, the first after the hiatus, was more like a re-introduction to the characters than a new episode, and this week's entry was only slightly better.

Still, it set up an awful lot for future episodes. And all told, it was still a pretty fantastic episode. Adding Jessalyn Gilsig is certainly a good idea. Now if only her character and Nathan's wife, played by the lovely Rena Sofer, can somehow meet and bring together two of my favorite actresses. That would be awesome.
