Summary

Before the recap begins, a quick refresher on the characters:

Niki - the woman who takes off her clothes and sees herself in the mirror
Peter - the nurse who thinks he can fly, Nathan's brother
Isaac - the druggie who can paint the future
Hiro - the businessman who can stop time
Claire - the indestructible cheerleader
Simone - the dying man's daughter
Micah - Nikki's genius son
Nathan - a politician and Peter's brother
Mohinder - the professor whose father was killed for his research
Matt – the police officer who hears voices

The next chapter begins now.

Two weeks after the events in "Fallout," Peter lies unconscious in a hospital bed in Manhattan. His mother and Nathan are at his side. He is dreaming.

It seems Jessica has been manifesting herself in jail. Four or five guards, one with an obviously broken nose, show up at her cell to take her to meet her lawyer. Niki did the right thing turning herself in. But those poor guards…

Claire watches a news report about her school reopening after the tragic death of Jackie. Her father tells her not to worry about reporters asking her questions but Claire is more worried about her fellow students. Thankfully, she has forgotten everything that happened (or has she) and thanks her father for finding her that night. She smiles as she prepares to leave for school but the smile fades as she walks away from her father.

Mr. Bennett stands in front of the window overlooking Sylar's cell. Sylar is in sorry shape, collapsed on the floor. He has been given enough drugs to kill an elephant. Mr. Bennett wants Sylar dead for what he did to Eden but he has not be given the order to do so.

Matt and Audrey (the FBI agent) roll up in the midst of a rather spectacular raid on a building. Lots of heavily armed people. The building turns out to be Mr. Bennett’s paper company where, according to Matt, Sylar is being held. But apparently Sylar is not there. Matt tries to read Mr. Bennett's thoughts but Mysterious Goon is mysteriously in the background and Matt gets nothing.

At the Museum of Natural History in New York City, Hiro watches a video about a dinosaur. But he is preoccupied with finding the sword depicted in Isaac's paintings. His powers have gotten weaker since Charlie died and he thinks the sword will restore his power. He spies a suit of armor in a display case. He thinks he has found his

Despite being in a nasty coma Peter is still dreaming. He keeps flashing back to his vision of the future., Simone shows up with flowers and learns that Peter has persistent idiopathic fever, which Mrs. Petrelli says means the doctors have no idea what is wrong with him. However, his heart is weak and Mrs. Petrelli thinks he is going to die. Nathan thinks otherwise.

Nathan tells Simone that Peter told him he thought he was absorbing too many powers just before he collapsed. They argue about the painting Simone showed him and Nathan has finally had enough and asks Simone to take him to the artist.

D.L. is doing his best to take care of Micah but makes the mistake of putting the peanut butter in the fridge. He then notices that his son has bruises on his face and learns that the other kids are calling Niki a psycho killer. He tells Micah that they are going to make it. And then someone knocks at the door. It is a man named Malski and he is looking for something. He tells D.L. that most of the charges have been dropped thanks to Niki confessing. D.L. hands Malski a briefcase but is stunned to learn that Linderman is not letting him off the hook.

Hiro's father used to tell him stories about an ancient warrior who has a nifty display at the museum. He had a powerful sword that made him a hero. Ando notices that the symbol on the sword is a combination of characters: "Great talent" and "Godsend." Just like Hiro's power.

The FBI has finally sent someone to investigate the list Mohinder sent them. Thankfully, Mohinder was in India when some of the killings took place so he is not a suspect. The list contains the names of people with a specific genetic marker. One of the names on the list, Sarah Ellis, turns out to be Eden. And Mohinder learns that she is dead. She was pulled out of a lake. The last thing Eden said to Mohinder was that she wanted to confess something to him. He is shaken by her death.

Matt and Audrey watch as another agent talks with Mr. Bennett. Matt has been watching the building every day for the last two weeks and that really does not make the bureau look good. Audrey is going to be benched and, more importantly, she no longer believes Matt has an ability. She tells him to go home. Instead, he confronts Mr. Bennett. He promises to figure out what is going on.

At school, Claire tries to talk to Zach but he blows her off (although he does offer his condolences for Jackie's death). He asks what happened to her at homecoming and she tells him that she cannot remember. He admits that he is having problems with his memory as well. She asks if they could be friends and he responds by telling her that they would not play well with others.

According to her lawyer, the district attorney is planning on seeking the death penalty. All Niki wants to do is her time. And then Jessica is there, talking to Niki. But from what the lawyer sees, Niki is just talking to herself. He thinks she is trying to prove insanity. Jessica wants to see a shrink. Niki insists she is not crazy. But the lawyer walks out, leaving a distraught Niki sitting alone.

At the museum, Hiro and Ando are eyed by a guard. Hiro asks where the gift store is, in broken English, and the guard points the way. They stop in front of the suit of armor and discuss the ethics of stealing it. Hiro tries to use his power to stop time and fails. Ando posits that in order to steal the sword, one must first have the sword. But Hiro tries again. However, instead of stopping time, he succeeds only in slowing it down. Good enough.

He opens the case, which sets off an alarm, takes the sword and runs off. He passes a guard slowly calling for backup and stops in front of a dinosaur display to brandish the sword. Time starts up again and Ando rushes out of the museum to meet up with Hiro outside. But when Hiro pulls out the sword, it is only a wooden fake. Linderman has the real deal. A dejected Hiro decides to take the fake back.

Simone takes Nathan to Isaac's studio. Isaac surprises both of them by showing up in the studio (sans shirt, for some reason) and kisses Simone on the cheek. Nathan beats a hasty retreat and leaves the two alone. Simone thinks Isaac looks healthy and for good reason. He is clean and can paint without them. He tells Simone he still loves her. Nathan picks that moment to interject, asking about a painting of a man apparently exploding.

Isaac insists he only painted what he saw but Nathan just cannot accept that his brother is somehow connected with this or that the world can actually be connected like this. Suddenly, Hiro and Ando burst into the studio. Hiro tells Isaac that they could not get the sword because it was a fake and the original is owned by Linderman. Nathan is shocked to hear the name Linderman used. And Hiro is shocked to see the "flying man" standing in the studio.

Claire meets with Mysterious Goon underneath the rusting refinery where she tried to kill herself on videotape with Zach. She wants to talk to Peter but Mysterious Goon tells her that she is not supposed to remember Peter. Mysterious Goon tells her that the people supposedly. She begs Mysterious Goon to give Zach back his memories because she does not want to be alone. He tells her that she is not alone and that he cannot give Zach back his memories. His "gift" does not work that way. But what they can do, it is not a freak show, it is God and it deserves respect.

Hiro tells Nathan about his vision of the explosion in New York City. Nathan notices that is English is getting better. Hiro gives the credit to a girl he met in Texas. Although Nathan does not seem to want to get deeply involved in whatever is happening or going to happen, he does think he can be of some help with regard to the exploding man in the painting.

Somewhere in the Nevada desert is an old, abandoned house. Inside is a man who can do something amazing. He can create bursts of energy (fire, perhaps) with his hands.

Back in Texas, Claire brings Zach to the refinery to recreate their initial meeting. The first time, she wanted the tape for her parents. This time, knowing what she knows about her biological parents, she wants the tape for herself. After telling Zach not to freak out, Claire runs off and climbs to the top of the rusting riders. Zach yells out that the camera is ready but is shocked to see and hear Claire fall to the ground with a sickening thud.

As she tucks a bone back into her chest, she speaks to the camera. A nasty cut on her forehead heals as she talks.

At the prison, Niki talks with D.L. on the phone. She is being sent to the psych ward for evaluation. Jessica tried to break out. D.L. is kicking himself for letting her turn herself in but Niki tells him he did the right thing. D.L. hands the phone to Micah, who wants his mother to come home. Niki tries to explain that one day Micah will understand what is going on. And D.L. will take care of him. She wants him to be strong for her but Micah says that is not fair.

Things get a little hairy when Niki starts getting out of control. Or is it Jessica? She really wants to see Micah and the guards take action. She snaps a nightstick in half and seems rather shocked at herself. The guards take her down.

Mohinder returns to his apartment and finds Mr. Bennett waiting for him. He wants to talk to Mohinder about Eden, who used her ability wisely, and the people who do not use their abilities wisely. Mohinder realizes that Mr. Bennett needs his help. The list that Papa Suresh created is important. Things can and do go very, very wrong when these abilities start to manifest themselves. But Mohinder will have nothing to do with Mr. Bennett, who leaves his business card in case Mohinder changes his mind.

At home, Matt talks with his wife. She had taken out a suitcase that morning but never got around to packing it. She knows they are having marital problems and she is willing to admit that most of those problems are her fault. He wants them to come clean with one another and tries to explain about his ability. Surprisingly, she does not laugh right off the bat. But she does have a problem believing him. So he decides to prove it. He asks her to pick a number between one and a million. Now she starts laughing. But she picks a number.

At the hospital, Peter is still dreaming. He sees the abandoned street in New York City, he sees Simone running towards Isaac, and he sees everything again. But he also sees a man laughing, a man with a power. A power that Peter took and could not control. After exploding in the dream, and taking most of the city with him, Peter wakes up screaming bloody murder. When Nathan returns, he finds the bed empty and his mother in the room alone. Peter woke up and ran off, leaving his very angry mother behind.

Simone has finally accepted the fact that Isaac can paint the future after realizing that Hiro's life and times are actually included in Isaac's comic book.

Peter is on his cell phone trying to book a plane ticket to the desert. While on hold, he spots the laughing man from his dream stealing money from a wallet. He chases after the man and is attacked. The laughing man is invisible and very upset to learn that someone can see him. As the laughing man tries to choke the life out of Peter -- who is now also invisible -- they cause a nasty commotion on the sidewalk.

As Mohinder begins his closing monologue, we see find Niki in a padded room wearing a straight jacket.

Mr. Bennett stares at Sylar.

Claire and Zach are starting their friendship over again.

Hiro is ready to go get his sword.

D.L. tells Micah that Niki is going to be okay.

Niki asks God to help her. Jessica thinks she is all the help Niki needs.

Review

After six weeks without a new episode of Heroes, I guess I was really jonesing for something more spectacular than this. On the surface, not much happened to move the plot forward; aside from the reason Peter keeps seeing himself exploding. But a lot did happen in this episode. The sword that Hiro is so eager to have was used by an ancient warrior many centuries ago, meaning these incredible abilities may have manifested themselves before. Linderman is very much involved with whatever is going on. Not only does he have the sword, he apparently also has plans for D.L. and that cannot be good.

Claire wants the truth and wants it badly. This is good. She is crafty enough to pretend her memory was wiped and mature enough to try to recreate her friendship with Zach rather than just tossing herself on her bed and crying herself to sleep for the next few years. She also wants to talk with Peter, which is also good because it might mean our core group of heroes will eventually all get together -- and hopefully not on the street in New York City just before Peter goes boom.

And speaking of Peter, what exactly is he planning? Heading to the desert to hide for the next few months? What if he stumbles upon a cactus or a scorpion with a nutty ability and accidentally absorbs that ability? Not a smart idea, especially now that Nathan is finally working with Hiro, Ando and Isaac. On the other hand, Isaac and Simone might be getting chummy again and that could send Peter into a deep depression. Maybe Peter thinks that such a depression is the reason he explodes. Or maybe I am just reading way too deep into things.

In any case, Heroes is back. Yes, I felt this episode was a bit of a recap/filler episode after the hiatus. But supposedly the producers have promised to answer some of this season's questions by the time the season finale rolls around. And with a second season ordered by NBC, it is likely the producers are telling the truth.
