Ah, once again Mohinder provides us with a nifty voiceover to kick off the first season finale, while scenes from the entire season are show,

As usual, the episode starts with the final few minutes of the previous episode. Only this time, we see just a little bit more of the story. For example, at the Kirby Plaza Building in New York City, we see Linderman shoot D.L. and D.L. kill Linderman (which took place in the previous episode) but then we see Niki drag D.L. to his feet and encourage him to phase them through a wall just as Linderman's security bursts into the room.

Likewise, at the medical complex inside the Kirby Plaza Building, we once again see Mr. Bennet shoot and kill Thompson. We see him confront Molly. We see Mohinder knock Matt to the ground and grab his gun. And then Molly, hiding under the bed, spots Matt slowly coming to his senses and calls out. Matt struggles to his feet and tells Mr. Bennet to stand down. He promised to keep Molly safe and nobody is going to hurt her.

Hiro and his father stand outside the SWORD PLACE. Hiro is worried about Ando and wants to go after him. Papa Nakamura tells him to continue with his mission. Despite a burning desire to finally live up to his father's expectations, Hiro goes after his friend.

At Isaac's loft, Sylar uses the ability he stole from the deceased painter to craft a portrait of a future battle in which he is pitted against Peter Petrelli.

At Nathan's office, his speech from the previous evening plays on the television. Mama Petrelli walks in with the news of Linderman's death, which she calls a tragedy. Still, nothing changes. Nathan -- now a congressman -- still has to bring the world together after the explosion in New York City. And he tells his mother he understands.

Niki and D.L. somehow make it to the main Kirby Plaza Building where Micah is being held captive on the 42nd floor. But D.L. can go no farther. He convinces Niki to go find their son and, after a moment's hesitation, she rushes off, promising to return.

Mohinder and Mr. Bennet drag Thompson's body out of the hallway before someone spots it. Mohinder is upset that Mr. Bennet would even consider harming Molly. But Mr. Bennet wants to safeguard his family -- especially Claire. Matt bursts in -- something is wrong with Molly -- and Mohinder rushes off. Mr. Bennet's phone rings. It is his daughter. Claire tells him that Ted was killed by Sylar. Mr. Bennet then tells Peter that Sylar has the same destructive ability that Ted had -- the same ability Peter has. Peter may be the only way to stop Sylar. Mr. Bennet plans to use Molly to find Sylar and charges Peter with keeping his daughter safe.

Peter pulls into a parking complex and finds his brother standing there. An angry Claire confronts Peter over calling Nathan, saying Nathan does not care about anyone, not even her (and she is his daughter). But Peter is scared and feels that his brother can help. He gets out of the car and tells Nathan that the bomb is Sylar. He asks for his brother's help. Nathan does not want to involve Claire in this whole mess -- and Peter hears his brother's thoughts saying that there is nothing he can do to stop the explosion. He realizes Claire was right about his brother.

Claire runs into Mama Petrelli while attempting to flee from Nathan.

After realizing that Claire is missing, Peter turns invisible to escape his brother. But Claire is nowhere to be found. Out on the street, his hands flare with Ted's nuclear energy. He struggles to control to ability before collapsing.

Mohinder has just given Molly a fresh transfusion and she is weak. But she is strong and insists she can tell them where Sylar is. Mr. Bennet brings her the map and a push-pin while Molly explains that there is one person she cannot find -- someone worse than Sylar. Whenever she thinks about him, he can see her. Mr. Bennet asks her to think about Sylar and she pushes the pin into the lower East Side. Mr. Bennet realizes it is Isaac's loft.

Mama Petrelli and Nathan walk with Claire between them. A cell phone rings -- Mr. Bennet is trying to call Peter -- and Mama Petrelli picks up. She tells Mr. Bennet that they are going to keep Claire safe. Mr. Bennet begs for a moment to say goodbye to his daughter and tells her to stay with Mama Petrelli and Nathan. She is safer with them. But once she is out of the city she should try to escape. Unfortunately, she does not know where Peter is. Mama Petrelli cuts the conversation short but not before Mr. Bennet tells his daughter he has a plan.

Back at the medical complex, Mr. Bennet tells the others they have to find Peter. But Matt is ready to go after Sylar with guns a ‘blazing, despite Mr. Bennet's warning.

On the street, Peter wakes up. Only now he is inside a greenhouse watching himself roll Mr. Deveraux -- who is quite dead -- out onto a patio. He is watching the past, watching the first time he met Simone, watching as his mother talks with Mr. Deveraux. He watches as his past self attempts to explain the importance of life and death to Simone. Really heavy stuff. His past self calls Mr. Deveraux a hero and then leaves with Simone.

Peter steps out onto the patio and overhears his mother talking with Mr. Deveraux about her children -- she calls Peter weak and explains that Nathan is the one to turn to. However, Mr. Deveraux is not certain that the bomb cannot be stopped. In any case, he will be dead before it goes off. And then, in a shocking twist, Mr. Deveraux speaks to Peter.

At Isaac's loft, Ando sneaks in the door with the sword ready. He is distracted by one of the paintings and almost slips in a pool of Isaac's blood. Sylar suddenly appears behind him, flings the sword away, and forces Ando against a window. He then picks up the 9th Wonder comic Ando dropped. As Sylar attempts to get Peter's location from Ando, Hiro teleports into the loft. Sword, fighting, teleport

Niki runs from room to room trying to find Micah. Inside one room she finds ... herself? It is Jessica, apparently, and on the ground behind her is Micah's body. Jessica taunts Niki before kicking her in the face.

Gun drawn, Matt sneaks into Isaac's loft and looks over the various paintings. He spots the pool of blood and the painting of the final confrontation between Sylar and Peter. He turns and leaves.

Mohinder tells Molly they have to leave the medical complex. Matt just called to tell him that Sylar is probably on his way. Molly pauses before informing Mohinder that Sylar is already there.

At Nathan's office, the newly-elected congressman gathers some things while Claire tries to convince him to do something about all the people who are going to die. She cannot understand how Mama Petrelli and Nathan are willing to let Peter die. They inform her that Peter will survive. Now she cannot understand how they are willing to let Peter kill millions of people and survive to remember doing it. Nathan draws Claire into an embrace, with Mama Petrelli explaining that they just want to give her a new family.

And then Claire breaks away from Nathan, gets a running start, and throws herself through a window. She falls several stories to the ground with a thud. As Mama Petrelli and Nathan look on, she gets to her feet and runs off.

As Niki and Jessica fight, Jessica continues to taunt Niki, knocking her to the ground. She stares into a piece of broken glass and sees the real Jessica staring back at her -- the Jessica who was beating the crud out of her is someone else entirely! Although Niki is not strong enough, Jesssica is, and the fake Jessica is knocked out. She reverts back to Candice and the body of Micah disappears. Niki/Jessica (which one is it!) hears Micah in another room, busts down the door, and is finally reunited with her son.

While attempting to sneak through the hallways of the medical complex, Mohinder and Molly stumble upon D.L.'s unconscious body. Although Molly worries he might be a bad guy, Mohinder stops to help. Unfortunately, the elevator is out of order, so Mohinder tells Molly to act as a lookout while he tries to find a place to hide.

Hiro and Ando materialize back in Japan. Ando is ecstatic that Hiro was able to use his ability faster than Sylar. Hiro must return to fight Sylar alone, because Ando has given him the bravery he needs to do so. Hiro hands his friend the sword and recounts what his father told him: "It is not the sword. It is the man." He picks up another sword and disappears.

Atop the roof, Peter tries to understand how he is standing and talking to Mr. Deveraux. Apparently, Peter needed to hear the truth before saving the world. And, apparently, he had the power to do so all along (he only needed to know how to do so). Mr. Deveraux explains that Peter can love unconditionally. Peter watches as his past self walks out and wheels Mr. Deveraux off the patio. Then things get a little fuzzy and he wakes up on the street with Mr. Bennet standing over him.

Because Claire is safe, Mr. Bennet promises to stay with Peter. And he will kill Peter if need be. Then Mr. Bennet reveals that his first name is Noah.

Back at the medical complex, Molly hears guards coming, Micah and Niki/Jessica run in, and somehow they all get into the elevator before the guards show up. Micah was able to get the formerly broken elevator working.

Outside, Peter and Noah scan the plaza for Sylar. There are few places to hide, Peter decides, and thus Sylar must be hiding in plain sight. Sylar chooses that moment to reveal himself and, with one finger, he tosses Noah across the plaza into a building. He collapses, dropping the gun, and moans in pain. Sylar turns to face Peter. It is on!

(After a commercial)

Sylar and Peter have a short exchange ("Haven't I killed you before?" / "Didn't take.") before Sylar begins choking Peter. Noah gets off a few shots but Sylar deflects them. Mohinder, Niki & Co. burst out of the building and Mohinder rushes to Noah's side. Sylar batters

Then Hiro materializes in front of Sylar. With a yell, he runs forward and thrusts his sword through Sylar's body. Peter tells Hiro to kill him but Sylar, in a last bit of energy, tosses Hiro against a building. Thankfully, Hiro is able to teleport away before he collides with the building, but Peter is left unable to stop himself from exploding. Claire comes running down the street, spots her father, takes his gun, and walks up to Peter, who stands in front of her and tells her to shoot him. Claire raises the gun but cannot pull the trigger despite Peter begging her to do so.

Suddenly, Nathan drops down from the sky and tells Claire there is another way after all. He pushes the gun down and turns to Peter, who suddenly realizes what his brother is considering. And he does not want his brother to die. They share a Kodak moment of brotherly love before Nathan grabs Peter and flies straight into the sky. Claire, left alone in the plaza, stares up. Her father drags himself to her side. An explosion fills the sky and Claire breaks down in tears. Sylar is still dead, thankfully, and the rest of the heroes are in varying states of disarray.

Matt seems to be dead. Nathan is most assuredly dead. Peter may or may not be able to regenerate himself. D.L. is wounded, perhaps mortally. And Mr. Bennet has a broken arm/shoulder, but, with a brace on his arm, he sits down next to Claire and tells her they are going home. This despite the fact that their house exploded. Still, he has a plan.

In the end, it turns out Sylar may not be as dead as one would hope. A trail of blood leads from where his body fell to a manhole, the cover slightly askew.

With that, Volume One comes to and end. Volume Two starts with the title card "Generations." Hiro falls from the sky onto a grassy knoll. He finds himself facing a band of Samurai warriors with swords and bows. He turns to run and spots a sole rider opposite the many warriors. Hiro is outside Kyoto in the late 1600s. And the Moon crosses in front of the sun, forming an eclipse.

Review

And thus did Season One of Heroes come to a mighty conclusion. After twenty-three episodes of anticipation, we finally learn who the "exploding man" really is: Peter. Was there any ever real doubt, though? I certainly never thought it would be Ted (even before he died) or even Sylar, evil as he may be. Sylar never seemed the mass murderer type. Still, it would have been nice to have a reason for Peter to suddenly have Ted's ability flare up. Is it triggered by anger? Did Sylar somehow flip a switch in his mind? Who knows?

I reckon everyone is glad Mr. Bennet -- or Noah -- did not kill little Molly. I think he could have done it, if he thought he had to, but it would have been a nasty thing to do. And she helped find Sylar, proving her worth. I would not be at all surprised to have her become a main character next season. Especially given the little tidbit she dropped about the solitary man she cannot find with her ability. The man who, when she tries, can see her. Creepy.

The fight between Niki and faux-Jessica/Candice was a little underwhelming. It was obvious to me that it was Candice, not Jessica, and given what we learned about Candice not being entirely evil, having her taunt Niki in such a way was hard to take. And when Niki/Jessica knocked out Candice, why did she revert back to the familiar woman we are used to? Why not the "real" Candice who is supposedly overweight?

The interaction between Hiro and Ando has always been a highlight of the show and this episode was no different. The scene back in Japan when Hiro explained that Ando gave him the bravery he needed to complete his mission was touching. And the following scene, when Ando told Hiro that folks will tell his story, was equally touching. I was worried that Ando would be killed off -- and he almost was killed by Sylar. Hiro saved the day, though. And he managed to run Sylar through with a sword without stopping time and despite the fact that Sylar should have been able to knock him aside with a finger. Strange, that.

I was glad to see Nathan show up to help his brother save the world (or at least millions of New Yorkers). It seemed as if Nathan was resigned to the fact that his brother was going to blow up. Or at least he wanted his mother to think so. Nevertheless, when he was really needed, Nathan stepped up and sacrificed himself, flying Peter into the stratosphere to explode. But did he really need to? In the past, we have seen both Claire and Peter "killed" and then brought back to life. Is there any reason to believe that, had Claire shot him in the head, Peter would be unable to regenerate? Claire took a bullet to the chest and came back fine. Mohinder could have removed the bullet from Peter's head and he should have been as good as new. I think so, anyway. But that would hardly be as dramatic.

As for the final scene -- and the teaser for Volume/Season Two of Heroes -- it was a little underwhelming. And we have never been given any indication that Hiro can travel hundreds of years into the past (or future). So to have him do so, even if he was desperately trying to keep himself from colliding with a building, was almost too much to believe. I was also expecting the Samurai warriors to be fighting a dinosaur. That would have been awesome.

All in all, a great ending to a great freshman season of a great show. I cannot wait until this fall to find out what is in store for our heroes.
