Summary

Before the recap begins, a quick refresher on the characters:

Niki - the woman who takes off her clothes and sees herself in the mirror
Peter - the nurse who thinks he can fly, Nathan's brother
Isaac - the druggie who can paint the future
Hiro - the businessman who can stop time
Claire - the indestructible cheerleader
Simone - the dying man's daughter
Micah - Nikki's genius son
Nathan - a politician and Peter's brother
Mohinder - the professor whose father was killed for his research
Matt – the police officer who hears voices

In New York City, Peter discusses stocks with Simone's father, who lambests Peter's financial situation. But the two seem close, able to joke over the man's impending death and share their love for one another. Peter opens a window and tells the man he can fly. He then proceeds to run towards the window, certainty written over his voice. And he flies. But it was only a dream.

He wakes up to his door buzzing and finds Simone standing outside. She is distraught; her father passed away an hour earlier. Peter takes her in his arms.

In Texas, Claire opens the front door and finds Zach standing there. He barges in and announces he has found the missing tape of Claire trying to kill herself. Although obviously happy to know where the tape is, Claire is upset that it was in Zach's house the entire time. Mrs. Bennett -- and her dog Mr. Muggles -- has to leave, so Claire is in charge of her younger brother. He finds the tape.

In Las Vegas, Niki lies motionless on the floor. Suddenly, she sucks in air and breathes Micah's name. She rushes through the house desperately looking for her son. Stopping in front of a mirror, she peers at her (solitary) reflection and asks for help.

In Los Angeles, Matt and his wife talk things over. The past few days have changed their relationship. He tries to tell his wife about his ability but stops after hearing her thoughts. She is worrying that he knows about something.

As Niki looks at herself in another mirror, someone knocks at the door. It is Texas Tina. Niki explains what happened, telling Tina she failed her son.

In Isaac's studio, Simone and Peter find Isaac gone and his paintings gone with him. Simone wanted to tell Isaac about her father and shows Peter a sketch Isaac drew months ago. She tells Peter about the day father came out of his coma, when he told her about how he flew all around the world seeing people with pain and how he saw Peter flying with him, telling him Peter would save the world. Peter insists he never had that conversation. But Simone is putting two and two together. The painting Peter needs was sold to a guy named Linderman who lives in Las Vegas.

Nathan, his wife (Heidi) and his mother talk politics in the kitchen. He is shocked that both his wife and his mother pick the same . Momma Petrelli wants Nathan to show off his family and Heidi is desperate to do anything she can to help out. She wheels herself away from the kitchen, leaving Nathan alone.

In the men's shower room at the police station, one of Matt's fellow officers can tell his friend is worrying about something. He invites Matt to join him for a beer and a game later that night and Matt agrees. The two are interrupted by a commotion in the shower room: a woman has walked in. It is the FBI agent Matt worked with earlier, who walks up to Matt and tells him Sylar has killed again and she needs him to come with her. When Matt insists he has to talk to his watch commander, the agent hands him an FBI badge and tells him everything is taken care of. All Matt has to do is change into "normal" peopl clothes.

Claire yells at her brother for leaving a mess and then discovers the tape is missing. She finds Lyle seated in front of the television watching her jump (from the first episode) and get hit by a car. She tries to explain it away as special effects but Lyle will have none of it. He grabs a staple gun and presses it against his sister's hand. Claire yelps with pain and tears the staple out, leaving two small, bloody punctures. Lyle is stunned to see all traces of the wound disappear in front of his eyes.

Lyle races out of the house with the tape, Claire hot on his heels. She yells for Zach to cut Lyle off but before either of them can get to him, Lyle locks himself in the family car. He yells for help, calling Claire a freak.

An oncologist with UCLA is the new dead guy. But there is no modus operendi (MO). Sylar's killings are random. And the body is giving off quite a bit of radiation. The only clue is a fingerprint seared to the bone. The agent wants Matt to Theodore Sprague, aka Sylar.

D.L. and Micah drive along slowly. Micah is worried about his mother and wants to go home. D.L. insists she will be fine but his son calls him a bad guy, not a hero. Heroes do not run away.

Texas Tina and Niki sit on the floor of her bedroom and Niki opens up about everything that has happened. She tells Tina that she sees another version of herself in the mirror -- calling her Jessica -- who tells wants to take over and tells her waht to do.

D.L. and Micah come across the scene of a car crash hin the middle of the street. D.L. jumps out of the car and runs to help, seeing a body in a burning car. Another car pulls up behind theirs, it is Ando and Hiro. As D.L. presses his hand through the car window and unlocks the door, Hiro promises Micah he will help. As he runs towards the car, Ando calls out a warning. A trail of flame is moving quickly towards the car. Before Hiro can react, the car explodes. But he is able to shut his eyes and stop time. He gently pushes a flaming tire headed for Ando and Micah, changing its direction, and then bodily shoves D.L. and the woman from the car out of the frozen inferno (but not before lamenting his lack of super strength).

When time resumes, Micah yells out for his father. D.L. is safe on the side of the road with the woman and Hiro. Ando flashes Hiro a thumbs up sign.

The Petrelli family are seated around a fancy table with a reporter named Oliver Denison. He asks Heidi about the accident (Nathan was driving) and if she was angry at her husband. She was angry at God. Peter shows up and is somewhat surprised to find ithe family having brunch (obviously he is not kept in the loop). Nathan takes Peter aside and tells him not to ruin the election for him. Peter wants his brother to get the painting but at the very mention of the name Linderman Nathan clams up.

Peter threatens, only half-jokingly, to fly off in front of the reporter, but instead sits down at the table with the rest of the family, much to Nathan's relief.

At the street, Hiro excitedly explains his situation to Micah, who recognizes Ando from his visit to Niki. D.L. wants to get the accident victims to the hospital but rushes off after Ando says he called the police.

Zach and Claire try to Lyle to give the tape back, although Zach's attempts are more stupid than helpful. Lyle wants to put it on YouTube (despite Zach's astute observation that YouTube is free) but an emotional appeal about family from Claire convinces him to roll down the window and hand the tape to her. Despite her brother's seeming indifference, Claire hugs him after he gets out of the car.

Matt is a bit perterbued to discover that they will not have any backup when the go after Sylar. The agent wants to make sure he does not get away with this. They enter a building and immediately smell something burning. It is not radiation. Instead, they find a bunch of photographs with faces burnt off. But there is a spike in radiation. The two hear something and pull their weapons. They enter another room and find it burnt to a crisp and irradiated. The two beat a hasty retreat.

During the brunch, Peter makes several remarks about how special his family but things turn ugly when Dennison starts questioning what happened with Nathan in Las Vegas. Peter saves the day by announcing Nathan brought him to a mental health clinic in Las Vegas where he met with a female doctor. It seems to pacify the situation.

The agent hands Matt a few anti-radiation pills. Things are not making sense with Sylar, though. Mrs. Sprague has cancer and the crispy oncologist had prescribed some meedication. Apparently, Ted Sprague went nuts after the oncologist said there was nothing he could do. The two fought and Ted killed him. When Matt and the agent tell him they have to take him in, he grabs a nurse. Matt and the agent pull their guns.

Ted wants to stay with his wife and exclaims that he has no idea what will happen if they shoot him. He might explode.

Niki calls Nathan asking for help but he turns her down and hangs up. Heidi rolls in and asks her husband if he still loves her. Nathan says yes but Heidi knows what her being in the wheelchair means for their relationship. She asks him to tell her that everything Peter explain about the clinic in Las Vegas was true, saying she will believe him. With a smile, he says it was all true and heads off to put the boys to bed. The expression on Heidi's face indicates she may not have believed him.

At the sound of a mirror shaterring, Tina rushes in to find Niki standing in front of the shattered mirror. The strange helix tattoo is on her shoulder again, indicating Mirror Niki has taken over. She tells Tina to leave. Tina insists she is only trying to help but Mirror Niki tells her to leave. Niki no longer needs her help. Tina leaves.

Back at the hospital, Audrey and Matt discuss Ted's destructive ability. Audrey applauds Matt's actions earlier in the room and suggests he try to talk to his own wife. As Audrey walks off, Matt calls his wife and leaves a message. Janice sits in front of the answering machine and listens to Matt talk about his feeling that she is not telling him something.

Nathan calls Linderman about the painting. He then goes to see his brother. Peter tells him to tell Heidi the truth about what happened in Las Vegas. Nathan explains that Heidi needs hope, not the truth about how he slept with another woman because he needed to be with someone whose very face did not make him feel guilty. He tells Peter that Linderman will not be letting the painting go. Peter tries to explain about the painting, about how they can use their abilities.

Nathan does not buy into Peter's hope. But as he leaves, he turns and tells

As Audrey watches Ted get booked, she notices a tattoo under his neck next to his shoulder.

Matt has the same tattoo on his shoulder. His buddy ffrom earlier walks up and congratules him on the Homeland Security bust. He tells Matt that the FBI agent called and pulled some strings to get him an interview with the FBI. Matt is pretty happy about that until he hears his buddy's thoughts about nailing Matt's wife. Matt turns and punches him.

In front of a sleazy motel, Micah walks up to a pay phone and places his hand on the keypad. There is an odd buzzing sound and then Micach dials his mother's cell phone. But his mother does not answer, Mirror Niki does. And Micah can tell. But Mirror Niki tells him his mother will not be back until she takes care of some things. He gives her the name of the motel he is staying at and then D.L. grabs the receiver and hangs up.

Micah insists he was just goofing around. The "Out of Order" sign on the payphone backs his story up. After getting cut off, Mirror Niki puts down the phone and picks up a pistol.

Review

First things first, the lovely Rena Sofer makes Heroes (already a fantastic television program) just a little bit better. Sure, some may compare her to a female Ted McGinley. But those eyes. Oh boy, those eyes. She really pulls off the wheelchair look well, I think. Hopefully she sticks around for a few more episodes. And maybe, just maybe, beats the odds and somehow walk again.

The lovely Rena Sofer aside this episode was packed with interesting tidbits and revelations. Micah is revealed as having a power. Claire's ability is revealed to her brother. Nathan's wife (played by the lovely Rena Sofer) reveals, somewhat obliquely, that she knows he has not been faithful to her. Simone reveals that her father had a vision of soaring through the sky with Peter before he died. Matt's wife's infidelity was revealed. And some other stuff probably happened.

Honestly, I am not sure my first reaction upon watching a video of my big sister being hit by a car would be to staple her in the hand. Even the brattiest of little brothers would probably think twice before doing something like that. The part about putting it on the Internet to make millions was more realistic, though. Poor Zach really needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. With Lyle locked in the car and Claire getting more distraught by the minute, talking about anal probes is probably not productive.

I am a little confused about what happened to Matt between the time he collapsed in the little grocery store and his first scene in this episode. Did I miss something? Was that ever addressed? No? Moving on to Matt's little tattoo. Ted had one too. That makes me think it is not just a strange birthmark but instead, perhaps, a tag given to folks abducted and mind-probed by Mr. Bennet and Mysterious Goon. Makes as much sense as anything else.

It was nice to have a meaty storyline for Matt and by extension Audrey. But Ted, the radioactive guy who apparently explodes now and again, his ability is quite obviously not a good one. Now, one could argue that any of the characters could use their abilities in a potentially negative way. But I am having a hard time coming up with a single good reason for Ted to blow himself up. Basically, this just makes me more curious about the source of these abilities.

One last thought: I think it would be interesting to see what would happen if Lyle had succeeded in putting the video on YouTube.
