Ando - Hiro's partner in crime
The Haitian/Mysterious Goon - mostly mute, works for Mr. Bennett

Candice - the shape shifting gal working with Thompson
Angela "Mama" Petrelli - mother of Peter and Nathan

When we last left our heroes (pun entirely intended) poor Mohinder was battered, bruised and stuck to the ceiling while Peter was getting his head sliced open by Sylar. Nathan had finally met Linderman, Hiro had been reunited with Ando and transported to a dreary future, and Mr. Bennet was in an awful lot of trouble. After a nifty recap, the first of five all-new episodes to close out the season began.

Mr. Bennet is in a cell at the Primatech Paper Company when Claire bursts in wearing her cheerleading uniform (recall she was supposedly at a cheerleading championship). But Mr. Bennet sees through the hoax: his daughter is in reality Candice, the shape shifting young woman working for Thompson. Speaking of Thompson, he shows up and offers to bring a book by. Mr. Bennet insists he has no idea where Claire is while Thompson admits that the only reason they are not trying tougher methods is friendship. Still, Mr. Bennet is on death row, waiting on an order from higher up.

At the Corinthian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nathan and Linderman wander through Linderman's art collection talking about good and evil. Linderman professes to care about the world and the only thing he wants to do is save it. For some reason he needs Nathan to do make it happen. And then Linderman reveals his own ability: he can bring dying plants back to life.

Matt wakes up to Mr. Bennet's voice. He is lying on the ground in his own cell and Mr. Bennet is telling him to bang on a pipe if he ever wants to see his wife and child again.

Nathan explains that Hiro told him he needs Linderman's sword to save the world. Linderman wants the sword back; his collection is a road map, envisioned by their artists, for a brighter future. But Nathan is not so sure. He looks at one of Isaac's paintings of a nuclear explosion. Apparently, Linderman discovered his power when he was quite young alongside others who were equally confused. Together, they did their best to make the world better. They succeeded at first, but then some folks started using their powers for selfish means.

Linderman then realized that something big had to happen, to change. And apparently a nuclear explosion in New York City (which would kill about .07% of the world's population) would give the world the hope they need. It would be a "catalyst" for good. And Nathan will be the one to rally the world. But not if he fails to get elected to Congress. Linderman then shows him another painting, this one showing Nathan in the White House. And Peter's big ole explosion will take place the day after Nathan is elected.

Nathan walks off, telling Linderman he is insane.

Back at the paper company, Mr. Bennet has Matt find a loose pipe that he can loosen. He has to hurry because the guards are on their way. Unfortunately, Matt is behind schedule and the guards show up only seconds after Matt manages to free the pipe. But he does it, and takes the guard's pass.

Peter shows up at Mohinder's apartment (this seems familiar) and calls out to his friend. Then he finds Mohinder, smashed against the ceiling. Sylar attacks, forcing Peter against a wall. He starts cutting Peter's forehead with his finger. A lock of Peter's emo-hair falls to the ground. But then Peter is able to use his telekinetic powers to toss Sylar across the room. But Sylar is not yet down for the count. Peter turns invisible so Sylar simply picks up all the broken glass on the ground and throws it about the room. One shard cuts deep into Peter and he collapses.

Mohinder, meanwhile, is able to free himself and shoves the wooden board with his father's map into Sylar. One would think Sylar would have a defense against heavy, rolling wood but it knocks him out good. Mohinder drops to his knees and takes stock of Peter's wounds.

At Mama Petrelli's home in Manhattan, Claire learns about her family. Mama Petrelli knew about Claire from the day she was born, although Peter was none the wiser and Nathan thought she had died in a fire. Claire is really not keen on going to France -- she would rather talk with Peter and Nathan -- but Mama Petrelli insists. In the future, when Claire has grown up, she can come back to the States. And it turns out Mama Petrelli has an ability as well, although she chooses not to share it with her granddaughter.

Back at Mohinder's apartment, Suresh wakes up and finds the list of folks with abilities missing, along with Mohinder and Peter. But he does find part of a magazine article talking about Isaac.

At that very moment, Isaac is having the artwork for the final issue of his comic book shipped off. He gives the deliveryman his sketchbook, saying it might be worth something one day. The deliveryman rushes off, overjoyed at the latest edition to his comic collection.

Jessica and D.L. discuss her work for Linderman. Jessica insists she did it all for Micah. But D.L. is sick of it. He wants to take Micah and leave, worried about Micah getting hurt as long as Jessica works for Linderman. Some of Linderman's goons show up, insisting she come with them. D.L. tells her she can say goodbye to

Matt is being led through the paper company by Mr. Bennet. He finds a jacket and then hides against a wall while Thompson and another man walk by, talking about moving Bennet, Matt and Ted. Mr. Bennet actually wants Matt to free Ted, although Ted is not really open to the idea.

Mohinder shows up at Mama Petrelli's house with bad news about Peter being dead. He even has the body to prove it. Mama Petrelli tells him to leave and he does. Claire comes downstairs and sees Peter's body as Mama Petrelli breaks down in tears.

Linderman's goons bring Jessica to Linderman's museum. She is a bit surprised to finally meet Linderman, who knows about the Niki/Jessica thing. Linderman needs a favor: he needs to borrow Micah. Or, rather, Micah's ability. There was a plan that needs a little work and Micah can be quite helpful. But Jessica is adamant about Micah not getting involved. However, Linderman was not asking. Jessica walks off, threatening Linderman to send whoever he wants.

With alarms blaring, Ted and Matt try to figure out what Mr. Bennet wants them to do. Ted needs to "burn bright" and somehow create an electromagnetic pulse. Unfortunately, Ted has no idea how to do that. But he gives it the old college try and succeeds. The power is out. Matt wants to go get Mr. Bennet while Ted wants to make a run for it. Matt convinces Ted that Mr. Bennet is the only one who can bring the Company down. So, the two go free Mr. Bennet.

Nathan returns home to Peter's dead body. The sorrow in his eyes is palpable. He embraces his brother, knowing Peter is not supposed to be dead per Linderman's grand plan. Mama Petrelli's plan? Hide Peter's body until after the election. But Nathan could not care less about the election. His brother is dead. Claire then walks in, saying she wants to see Peter. Mama Petrelli tells Nathan to let Claire have a moment with Peter and the two of them leave. Claire does her sad, crying girl routine and then pulls the piece of glass from the back of Peter's skull. The life returns to his eyes and he coughs rather violently.

Mama Petrelli and Nathan are shocked at what they see -- and a tear rolls down Claire's cheek -- while the first thing Peter says is "You saved my life." Claire's response? "I guess we're even now." Aw, what a touching moment complicated only by the expression on Nathan's face (the election is on!) and the dried blood still caked on Peter's face.

(After a commercial)

Nathan suggests that Peter keep the bloody shard under his pillow. Although Peter disagrees, Nathan insists he is nothing without his brother. good thing Peter cannot die thanks to Claire's regeneration. Which brings the explosion in Isaac's painting into question. Not that it matters. Peter has no plans about blowing up. He then tells Nathan to talk to Claire, to talk to his daughter. The fact that Claire, the cheerleader Peter had to save, is Nathan's daughter is a spooky coincidence and Peter is certain they need her.

Mama Petrelli then walks in and admits she knew about their abilities long before they did.

At a diner, the threesome of Mr. Bennet, Matt and Ted sit down for a meal. The Company is not going to come after them in daylight thanks to a tracking system. Mr. Bennet is certain they can get to and destroy the system which is in New York City. He even has tickets. And then the name Linderman comes up and Matt realizes that Mr. Bennet is not as high up in the Company as they thought. But they decide to go to New York City anyway.

Jessica picks Micah up early from school. Outside their house are a bunch of Linderman's goons. For some reason, Jessica has changed her mind about letting Linderman meet Micah and the two are introduced, with Linderman asking if Micah would be interested in saving the world. When Linderman and Micah drive off, Jessica turns out to be Candice! What a twist. The real Jessica then drives up in her sporty red convertible and passes Candice.

Back at Mohinder's apartment, Mohinder is talking with Thompson about Peter's death and Sylar. Of course, Thompson was not the one Mohinder called. That was Mr. Bennet (but Mr. Bennet is no longer with the Company). Thompson offers any support Mohinder might need for his research but Mohinder just wants to stop Sylar.

At his studio, Isaac finishes his latest painting when Sylar shows up. But Isaac of course, knew Sylar was coming to kill him. He is ready to face the future and readily submits to Sylar, knowing that Sylar will be stopped and killed. Sylar wants to see these paintings of the future and knocks Isaac to the ground, impaling him in the arms with paintbrushes. Isaac is in a cynical, depressing mood, talking about knowing his place and all that jazz. He has shown "them" how to kill Sylar, though, and how to stop the bomb. He is finally going to be a hero. Posthumously, of course, because Sylar moves in for the kill.

Nathan fingers Peter's brain shard and uses it to cut open a package containing the painting of him in the White House. Claire walks into the room and Nathan apologizes for the two of them not meeting earlier. He wants to be a better person and he wants to be there for his daughter. Alas, he cannot. Not with the election and Linderman's future and Peter blowing up and all that (although he only talks about the politics with Claire). An illegitimate daughter like Claire would really complicate things. So Claire needs to go to France for a week. After that, she can come home to her family. He wraps his daughter in a hug, staring at

Sylar, his hand bloody, paints his own portrait of the future, this one with a crudely drawn Sylar in the Oval Office instead of Nathan.

Five years in the future, Hiro and Ando look out at the ruins of New York City. They failed. Hiro failed. But Ando reminds him that he has the sword now and his power. They have to go back and find out what mistakes they made in the past. They have to go see Isaac, even though Isaac was dead when the bomb went off. When they show up at Isaac's studio, they find the place a mess. Strings of paper are everyone, a sort of timeline. A picture of Claire there, a clipping of New york City destroyed, an article about Nathan. They hear a noise.

It is Future Hiro. He glares at Regular Hiro, their swords drawn.

Review

So, Linderman has a super duper green thumb, eh? Not exactly the power one would expect of someone with his influence and ambition. Of course, it turns out he can apparently heal anyone and in his youth used that ability for good. Only later did he become evil, although he does not see it that way. Apparently, blowing up half of New York City's population is a good idea to Linderman. It also gives us this episode's title: half the population of New York City is apparently .07% of the world's population (I hope Linderman got his math right on this one).

Although the series has, in the past, started o ff one episode by showing the last few moments of the last episode, this was the first one I could recall where a scene from a prior episode is shown again deep into a new episode. That probably makes little sense. What I mean is, the scene where Peter walks into Mohinder's apartment was the last scene of "Parasite," the episode before the spring hiatus. That scene was shown again in this episode; only it was not the start of the episode. I thought that was a little strange.

When Mohinder showed up at Mama Petrelli's house with Peter's dead body I was pretty sure our favorite angsty hero was not actually a stiff. But the fact that he appeared to be dead does bring into question the extent of his ability. Earlier, when Peter was training with Claude, it appeared that he could call up from memory any ability he had come into contact with. Well, Peter came into contact with Claire and had used her healing ability. So what happened with the healing back at Mohinder's apartment? Does Peter have to be conscious for the powers to manifest themselves in his body?

When Claire pulls the shard of glass from his skull and Peter wakes up, I doubt anyone was surprised. And Claire was unable to revive herself while that chunk of wood was in her head during an earlier episode. She did pull the skin of her chest together after a vivisection, though, and cough out a bullet. Maybe she just does the healing thing better than Peter at this junction.

Poor Isaac. He never really got along well with the world, getting addicted to drugs and killing Simone. But if what he told Sylar is true -- the part about having told "them" (presumably Hiro, Peter and the others) how to kill Sylar and stop the bomb -- in the end Isaac may have been the most important hero of them all. He was their oracle.

Candice is really getting around. And in all sorts of shapes. First she impersonates Simone, taunting Isaac. Then she tricks Mr. Bennet into revealing what he knows (we still have no idea where Mrs. Bennet is (or Lyle, for that matter)). Then she pretends to be Claire even though it should have been obvious that Mr. Bennet would see through the rouse. And finally, she brings Micah to Linderman. She must really love what she does.

There was really not enough Hiro and Ando in this episode, although they had a nice scene at the end with the creepy timeline in Isaac's office and the encounter with Future Hiro. And finally, is it possible that Mr. Bennet, Matt and Ted are the greatest trio since the last great trio? Think of the spin-off possibilities, NBC! The Terrific Three! The Triumphant Three! The Totally-Awesome Three!
