Ah, once again, the deep soothing voice of Super NBC Announcer Man offers up a fantastic recap of the last few episodes. What will happen in tonight's episode (and who will, as the title posits, do some running).

Last week we saw Mommy call Daddy. This week we see Daddy get the call. In Manhattan, Nathan is a bit surprised to get a call from Meredith, given that fourteen years have passed since her funeral. She tells him about their daughter, who was adopted and has blonde hair and is smart. Both Nathan and Meredith are aware of the timing of her call what with the election only two weeks off. Nathan offers a cool $100,000 and Meredith agrees.

At the Bennett household, Mr. Bennett walks in the front door with a sickly Mrs. Bennett. Claire learns that her mother has been having some headaches. She asks her father if the doctors know about Mrs. Bennett's memory loss. Because Mr. Muggles is not worried, Mrs. Bennett tells Claire not to worry.

Jessica, in Niki's body, covers up her tattoo with make-up as she argues with Niki (who is still trapped in a mirror, poor girl).

In L.A., Matt prepares for his first day as a bodyguard/private security.

Micah wants to fight crime as a family and Jessica/Niki sends him off to school with a laugh. As D.L. walks out he tells Jessica/Niki that an envelope is waiting for her on the table.

If he carries his gun on the job Matt can make $500 a day compared to $350.

Jessica is still working for Mr. Linderman. She makes a call and gets a job taking someone out for Linderman. She has a gun and everything.

Matt's job is to protect Malsky (that creepy lawyer).

Jessica's job is to kill Malsky. Oooh.

Hiro and Ando are back in Las Angeles with only two weeks to stop New York City from blowing up. Hiro reminds Ando that they must have hope. Ando reminds Hiro that they have to find a way into Linderman's office. As they walk through a kitchen they find a woman in a princess outfit sobbing. Ando offers help to the woman, who introduces herself as Hope.

Matt tries to make small talk with Malsky as they drive downtown but is rebuked. All Malsky wants is a bodyguard. Matt can hear Malsky thinking that Matt had better know how to handle a gun.

Mohinder tries desperately to contact everyone on his father's list. But everyone keeps hanging up on him. But he gets one message from a man named Zane Taylor. Something is happening to Zane.

Back in L.A., Hope explains that her problems stem from this guy she is dating. He hit her once. She accidentally left her money in a bag at his place after sneaking out. Ando offers to get the bag for her, which bothers Hiro because it is a distraction from the mission. Is it just a coincidence that Hope's name is, well, Hope? Ando thinks not. Hiro wanted to find hope and dagnabit, they found Hope. And Hope knows people who know Linderman. Maybe she can introduce them.

In order to get past security, Hope has Ando pretend to bring her boyfriend some room service.. The man who opens the door does not recall ordering room service but accepts it when Ando informs him it is complimentary. Ando leaves after dishing out some ice, leaving Hiro hidden inside the cart. As the boyfriend heads to the bathroom for a shower Hiro crawls out and unlocks the door to let Ando in. They start looking for the bag but instead find a rather nasty looking shotgun. Ando uses Hiro's own heroic logic in an attempt to compel his friend to keep looking for the bag. But Hiro wants to call the police.

After locking Hiro out of the room, Ando crawls under the bed and finds Hope's bag. But the boyfriend finishes his shower and exits the bathroom, leaving Ando hiding under the bed.

In Virginia Beach, Zane sits anxiously awaiting Mohinder's arrival. But it is Sylar who shows up. He introduces himself as Dr. Suresh and Zane lets him in. This does not bode well for poor Zane.

(after a commercial)

Zane offers to show Sylar his ability. He has not left his home in three weeks. Zane pulls a pot out of the kitchenette and sets it on the floor in front of Sylar, telling him to step back. Then he does his thing. Sylar looks impressed.
***

Nathan discusses his situation with his mother. If the press gets a hold of the story things will get messy. Mama Petrelli tells her son not to go see Meredith and his daughter.

Claire is sitting on her bed, holding the wind chime the Haitian gave her, when her father walks in. He asks about cutting school the other day. He has found the fake tickets on Claire's computer and grounds her. Claire gets upset and yells at her father, telling him she is not her real father. She calls Meredith and is shocked to learn that her biological father is flying down from New York. But Meredith is not sure if Claire should meet him. She is going to talk to the man and get back to her. Meredith tells Claire she loves her and hangs up.

Matt does his security guard thing and guides Malsky to the diamond store. Jessica/Niki watches as they walk past her. The jeweler knows about the guy Linderman sent to take out Malsky and thus Matt knows as well. He rushes Malsky out of the building. It turns out Malsky is no longer working with Linderman, having stolen a good two million. He offers Matt a diamond to get him out of the country and Matt overhears Jessica/Niki thinking in the elevator and raises his gun. But Jessica/Niki steps off the elevator on another floor. She is seems quite happy at the prospect of hunting down Malsky and the bodyguard.

Hiro overhears Hope on the phone discussing how she found two Chinese guys to get the suitcase for her. And then Hiro knocks into a rack of showgirl costumes. When Hiro informs her that he and Ando are Japanese, not Chinese, Hope stops playing nice. She calls him Sulu (oh, the geek love) and then punches him.

Malsky and Matt rush down many flights of stairs before Malsky has to stop, wheezing, and grab for his inhaler. Jessica/Niki is hunting them and passes a mirrored sign with Niki begging her to stop. And then Niki is standing on the stairs, arguing with Jessica. And Matt can hear both of them. He calls for backup, thinking there might be two shooters, and Jessica/Niki catches up with them. She fires off a few rounds but Malsky and Matt are able to run off. Matt sends Malsky to try to meet up with the cops and prepares to face off with the woman chasing him.

He is able to come up behind the woman and points his pistol at her head. He has her drop her gun and then tells Matt that Niki is off killing Malsky (she only seemed slightly surprised that Matt could hear Niki). He handcuffs her to a railing and runs off to find Malsky. He can hear Malsky's thoughts before he finds him at the end of hallway. Unfortunately, Jessica/Niki finds him, grabs him, and tosses him through a window.

As squad cars roll up, sirens blaring, Matt lies unconscious on a girder below the window. Shots are fired.

(after a commercial)

Matt wakes up on the girder and finds himself high above the street. Below, cops are doing their thing. He almost slips as he tries to stand up.

Claire knocks on Meredith's door. She just has to see her father and Meredith just does not understand. But Claire is willing to wait all night. The two take a walk and Claire tells Meredith about her mother being sick. She thought maybe her father could somehow help. Meredith tells Claire differently, though. She had better not count on her father. Money will be forthcoming from him, anything else is unlikely. Claire does not want her share of the $50,000 (oh Meredith, you schemer you) that is coming from her father. Meredith is planning on heading back to Mexico but wants Claire to take good care of herself. As Claire prepares to leave, Meredith snaps a picture with her cellular telephone.

Matt manages to climb back through the window and finds Malsky quite dead no the floor. The police chose that exact moment to stumble upon the body. They think Matt did it.

Mohinder finally shows up at Zane's place and is let in by Sylar (who pretends to be Zane). Sylar-as-Zane explains that he had a sort of epiphany that morning; there is no shame in having an ability. He offers to show Mohinder the ability and pulls grabs a toaster, telling Mohinder to step back. He then proceeds to dissolve the toaster without evening touching it.

Nathan arrives at the trailer park and finds his way to Meredith's trailer. He apologizes for how everything turned out, admitting he could have been a better person (shocking revelation, Nathan). He gives her the check and then asks about Claire, who is hiding underneath the trailer window. He looks at the cellular telephone as Meredith goes on about how Claire wanted him to save her. She offers to call Claire but Nathan needs to be getting back to his family. Claire watches as he gets into his car and, angrily, pelts the back windshield with a rock. She runs off, leaving Nathan feeling somewhat unsettled.

Mohinder is very interested in how Sylar-as-Zane is able to control his ability. It all comes down to a sort of peace, according to Sylar-as-Zane, a sort of destiny. Mohinder wants to take a DNA sample and Sylar-as-Zane is more than willing to oblige. The tea kettle starts whistling (Sylar's doing, obviously) and Sylar-as-Zane heads to the kitchen. The real Zane's body is lying on the floor and Sylar-as-Zane gets the DNA sample from the body's mouth. And then Mohinder tells Sylar-as-Zane of the dozens of other people with abilities with potentially hundreds more. Sylar-as-Zane offers to tag along to help Mohinder.

Hope waits for Ando to return with the bag. Poor Ando was stuck under a bed. Hope tells him that she took Hiro to meet her friend who can introduce him to Linderman. And then she tells him that Hiro told her he no longer needs Ando. She gives Ando a big ole kiss and the two head off.

Hiro is locked in a closet. He tries slamming into the door. Eventually, it opens, and Hiro is staring at the business end of a pistol. Someone from the state gaming commission is pointing it at him. Hiro offers the standard Vulcan greeting and looks sheepish.

The police are not exactly buying Matt's story of "the incredibly strong killer and her partner," especially with the diamonds missing. Matt remembers something that Malsky was thinking, finds the diamonds, and is eager to return them. But then he overhears one of the cops talking smack about him and instead pockets the diamonds.

Claire returns home. Mr. Muggles is barking. Mrs. Bennett does not recognize Mr. Muggles. Claire tries to tell her about Mr. Muggles but Mrs. Bennett insists she does not know Mr. Muggles nor does he know who Claire is.

Jessica/Niki tells her handlers that the job was done. Another package, another job, is waiting in her bedroom. Jessica/Niki remembers this man, Nathan Petrelli.

Review

Oh, that was one superb opening segment. Personally, I would have dropped everything with Meredith and Nathan plus all the family Bennett stuff. Make it all about Matt and Jessica/Niki. Although, admittedly, that might dilute the effect of the duality (is that the right word?) between Matt and Jessica/Niki. It only worked because it was relatively short. Cutting out the scenes with Meredith, Nathan and the Bennetts would either make for a very short opening or a longer, less interesting opening cutting back and forth between Matt and Jessica/Niki.

Much of this episode, sadly, felt like more filler. Especially the Hiro/Ando parts. Although I truly enjoy their antics it seems like they have not moved forward in a long, long time. Sure, they know what they have to do vis-à-vis Linderman and the sword, but they are not getting any closer to actually doing it. The same goes for Claire. Aside from her growing anger at her father, the continuing saga of a pretty cheerleader in Texas is just spinning its wheels. What happened to the momentum building up over the first dozen episodes of the season? What happened after the culmination of that momentum in "Homecoming" when Peter saved Claire?

The "Who's Her Daddy?" storyline is much less compelling than the "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" storyline. And aside from bringing a new "hero" into the mix it really does not seem to be worth all the effort. Are we going to learn that it takes the coupling of two people with abilities to produce a child with an ability? We already knew Nathan was a scummy man so seeing him not care enough to meet his daughter is nothing surprising (although it is a little surprising that he made such a stink about Meredith and Claire while talking to his mother). And Claire was already connected to Nathan through Peter so there was no need to go to all this work just to bring two heroes together. On that note, however, the way Jessica/Niki and Matt meet is neato.

Speaking of Matt, I am not a fan. He is now a fallen cop who can hear things. And he got beat up by a girl. Geeze. In all seriousness, nothing about the character of Matt Parkman has ever worked for me. I have said it before and I will say it again: Matt Parkman feels like an afterthought. And with the introduction of more heroes, do we really need a mediocre one like Matt? I have to say no.

All in all, the only parts of this episode that might have some repercussions down the line are Sylar-as-Zane teaming up with Mohinder, Mrs. Bennett totally losing her mind, and maybe the super team of Hiro and Ando being split up (but we all know they are going to get the band back together in another episode). Oh, and Jessica/Niki has been charged with killing Nathan. So that is something.
