Summary

Before the recap begins, a quick refresher on the characters:

Niki - the woman who takes off her clothes and sees herself in the mirror
Peter - the nurse who thinks he can fly, Nathan's brother
Isaac - the druggie who can paint the future
Hiro - the businessman who can stop time
Claire - the indestructible cheerleader
Simone - the dying man's daughter
Micah - Nikki's genius son
Nathan - a politician and Peter's brother
Mohinder - the professor whose father was killed for his research
Matt – the police officer who hears voices

After a nifty shot of the spinning, glowing planet Earth, we find Mohinder in Kanyakumari, India performing a ceremony for his father. He pours his father's ashes into the ocean and waves a stick of incense in the air. He then cries for his father.

In New York, Eden dabs at Isaac's forehead with a damp rag. She promises Isaac that after he gets himself clean he will still be able to paint. As she carefully shaves his face with a straight blade she admits she went through the same thing herself. Later, somewhere else in the rehab center/wherever Isaac is, Eden looks over Isaac's paintings. She stops in front of a particular painting that depicts a redheaded waitress who has her hands full with several plates of food.

In Texas at the Burnt Toast Diner, a redheaded waitress named Charlie serves a pair of police officers. She gives one of the officer's the answer to a crossword puzzle question: Kanyakumari. She seems to know everything about anything. She later tells Ando and Hiro that lately she has been remembering lots and lots, including quite a few phrases in Japanese.

After impressing Hiro and Ando with her Japanese, Charlie is asked to suggest meals for them. She does so and then leaves to give their orders to the cook. A mysterious man, partially hidden in the shadows, watches Ando and Hiro. Suddenly, his coffee cup moves itself into his waiting hand. Obviously, this guy has some secrets.

Back in India, Mohinder straps on some sandals. Another man sits down next to him and asks him if he will be going back (to the United States, presumably). Mohinder tells the man there is nothing for him in the States and that he finds everyone there lonely, including himself. After the two notice a pretty girl named Mira, the man offers Mohinder a job. Classes start Monday and he can move into his father's office.

At Chennai University, Mohinder turns on the light and begins to look over his father's belongings. He begins to pack things up but is intrigued by a locked door and strange symbols on a computer. Suddenly, Mira pops through the door and the two discuss their history. Apparently, Mira said something rather nasty things about Papa Suresh but Mohinder is willing to let bygones be bygones.

Mira has just gotten a fancy job at some scientific institute and she offers to get Mohinder an interview with the caveat that his father's theories do not come up. She leaves, but not before remembering that the two still have to say hello. He looks back at the computer.

At the F.B.I. Headquarters in Los Angeles, Audrey calls Matt an idiot for decking another office. She is quite upset but backs off (somewhat) after asking if the guy deserved it. He did. The two only have an hour to get some answers from Ted guy before Homeland Security moves in. Audrey compares Matt to Ted, much to Matt's dismay. She hands him a radiation badge, warning him that if it stops being green they are in trouble.

Back at the diner, Hiro helps Charlie with her Japanese. She is able to remember anything she reads, calling it a skill. Hiro says his skill is much more complicated but when she asks what it is, he pauses. His skill is teaching Japanese to anyone. Charlie calls him sweet and then leaves to pick up an order. Hiro is happy.

The mysterious shadowy man takes a drink.

Ted is upset. He was not allowed to go to his wife's funeral. Things get heated (ha!) when Ted gets even more upset and threatens to blow the whole place up. Matt manages to calm him down and starts reading his thoughts. Ted blacked out and when he woke up things started dying. Matt realizes Ted went through the same thing he did after he passed out at the bar. He asks if Ted woke up with bruises. Ted pulls aside the collar of his shirt to reveal a tattoo on his neck.

Matt has the same tattoo.

Mohinder continues clearing out his father's office and finds a notebook with a key. He places it in the box and sits down, staring at the computer. It is still churning out numbers. Mohinder then flashes back to an argument he had with his father before Papa Suresh left for the United States. Only rather than just remembering the argument, he finds himself standing in the midst of it, seeing his father arguing with himself.

He then finds himself watching his father talk with his mother. Papa Suresh thinks Mohinder will hate him for leaving. Mohinder picks up a soccer ball that has rolled towards him. He spots a boy standing and looking at him. The boy does not answer any of Mohinder’s questions and runs off after Mohinder throws him the ball.

He wakes up and walks away from the computer.

Ted tells Matt and Audrey about his experience at the bar before things went wacky. He went to a hotel bar to buy everyone a drink. There were only a few people in the bar. The next thing Ted knew, he was in his car and it was two days later. He soon noticed that things started dying, like plants. And his wife came down with radiation poisoning.

Matt admits that he, too, woke up with two days missing. And now he can hear things that he should not be hearing. Ted and Matt bond over their similar experiences. They have to find the presumably Haitian man who both Ted and Matt saw before they blacked out.

The Homeland Security folks barge in and take Ted, letting slip the fact that Matt was suspended. He argues with Audrey about not telling her he was suspended and about how Ted can help him figure out what is happening to him. He stalks off.

Mr. Bennet heads to the office, says hello to the security guard and then walks down a long, narrow corridor. He then makes his way to a very, very large room (like a warehouse) where Isaac and Eden are waiting. The heroin is out of Isaac's system and Mr. Bennet is ready to meet him. Eden introduces the two. Mr. Bennet calls Isaac's ability a blessing. Isaac sees it as a curse. Mr. Bennett promises to help Isaac figure things out. He admits he needs Isaac's help.

At the diner, Hiro is enamored with Charlie. He heads to the bathroom. Charlie heads to the storage room and begins opening a large can of tomato paste. She hears a strange sound but continues working. There is another sound. Blood drips down Charlie's face. Another waitress hears Charlie crash into something and goes to investigate. Her screams bring the two police officers. Charlie is dead.

Hiro exits the bathroom with a smile on his face. Ando points him in the direction of the storage room and Hiro sees what has happened. The smile disappears.

Back in India, Mohinder talks with his mother. He shares the dream he had and asks if it was true. His mother admits to pushing Papa Suresh to go to the United States. Mohinder then learns that he once had a sister (she was the one Mohinder could never replace). Her name was Shanti and she was five years old when she died. Mohinder was only two years old. Papa Suresh was convinced Shanti was special and equally convinced that Mohinder should never know.

Mr. Bennet tells Isaac that the girl he has painted three times is his daughter. And the dark, shadowy man Isaac painted is Sylar and he is going to kill Claire the next day. Sylar is killing people and nobody can stop him because nobody knows where he is. Mr. Bennet needs Isaac to paint. But Isaac cannot paint without his drugs. So, Mr. Bennet pulls out some drugs and offers them to Isaac.

But Isaac is not willing to throw away his life and literally pushes the drugs aside. Mr. Bennet tells Isaac about something that happened fourteen years ago. A woman was killed and left a baby behind. Mr. Bennet and his wife took that baby in as their own. And that baby, now fourteen years old, will die if Isaac does not paint. He promises to try once more without the drugs.

Mohinder returns to his father's office and finds someone typing at the computer. It is the boy from his dream. The boy runs off and Mohinder chases after him. He runs through a door and finds himself in a dark alley. He sees his father sitting in his cab. He sees his father beaten to death. He sees the boy again, pointing at him. Mohinder walks towards the boy, who opens his hand to reveal a key.

When Mohinder wakes up, he pulls his father's notebook out of the box and takes out the key tucked inside. It is an exact match for the one in his dream (but then again a lot of keys look alike).

Mr. Bennet is surprised to hear Claire calling out his name. After being reassured that everything is okay, Claire explains that she needs a big ole roll of paper to make a banner for the trophy case. She has come to her father as a last resort -- nobody else had any idea where to get paper that size. Mr. Bennet is more than happy to help out but the touching father-daughter moment is interrupted by Eden, who tells Mr. Bennet they have situation.

Claire seems a little startled to see Eden but Mr. Bennet quickly takes charge of the situation. He sends Claire to the sample room with permission to take whatever she needs. Claire leaves and Eden tells Mr. Bennett that Isaac simply cannot paint without the drugs. Mr. Bennett pulls out a syringe. Eden is surprised, is he going to tell Isaac to take the drugs? No, Mr. Bennett says. Eden is.

But Eden insists she was promised she would never have to do something like this again, Eden was promised she would never have to do something like this again. Mr. Bennet reminds Eden of what she was before he found her. She takes the syringe, reluctantly. Mr. Bennet watches as she Isaac argues with her. But she whispers something in his ear and he takes the syringe. She then shoots Mr. Bennet a very evil look.

At the diner, Charlie's body is carted out of the storage room. One of the police officers sits down with Ando and Hiro. Charlie's head was ripped open. Quite disgusting. She was killed the same way Isaac was in the vision Hiro had of the future. And Hiro thinks he can go back and fix this. He still regrets not doing anything when those poker players were killed.

He suggests going back in time to the day before to stop Charlie from coming to work. Ando is worried Hiro will get himself killed in the process or find himself somewhere else, somewhere else. Against Ando's wishes, Hiro shuts his eyes tight and then disappears, leaving Ando sitting alone at the table. He waits a moment and then starts counting.

Hiro does not reappear.

Janice (Matt's wife) looks through a photo album when Matt walks in. Someone called Janice to ask why her husband punched another officer (that sleazy Tom character). Matt hears his wife's worried thought that Matt knows. And he does. When the truth comes out, Janice wants to know if their marriage is over. Matt is not sure and the conversation is interrupted by a phone call. It is Audrey. Ted has escaped.

Matt leaves.

With the key from his father's notebook Mohinder is able to open the locked drawers in his father's desk. They appear empty but eventually he finds a folder filled with clippings about sleep research and learning while asleep. There is also a picture of the boy he keeps seeing in his dreams.

With his eyes clouded over Isaac paints as Eden looks on.

Claire lies on the living room floor, making the banner. Her father watches her, a worried expression on his face.

Ando waits for Hiro to return. Behind him, on the diner's bulletin board, is a picture of Charlie. Hiro is standing next to her. Before he went back in time, the picture only showed Charlie.

Review

Before the episode began I asked myself what would happen if Rena Sofar (Nathan's paraplegic wife Heidi) did not appear in the episode. Would I be sad? Would it make or break the episode for me? It was an interesting question. As it turns out Rena Sofar was not in this episode. I was disappointed but the episode was nevertheless very enjoyable. And very, very intriguing.

I was especially grateful for a Mohinder storyline that actually had some meat to it. Not only have we learned why Papa Suresh was so obsessed with his "crazy theory -- the special daughter who died at age five -- but Mohinder has regained his faith in himself and his father. Rather than just wandering around half-heartedly following up on his father's research, Mohinder now has a mission.

Also impressive was the Mr. Bennet storyline. We now have confirmation that Claire's mother, at least, was somehow involved with the work Mr. Bennet does. Whether or not that means she herself had an ability or if she was just collateral damage is still a mystery. But if Mr. Bennet is to be believed, he is working against Sylar, which makes him a sort of good guy. And he is not working alone. Eden has the ability to convince people to do whatever she wants with but a whisper. Before Mr. Bennet got his hands on her she was apparently getting herself into quite a bit of trouble.

So, Mr. Bennet is apparently able to not only track people who have abilities but also those whose abilities have yet to manifest and then manifest those powers. But why? Why would he want to turn Ted from a loving husband into a walking, talking nuclear reactor that slowly kills his wife?

And Sylar, boy, what a character. He sure likes to kill people. And kill them good. Poor Charlie, she had such an attractive accent and was so smart. And poor Hiro, finally able to connect with someone and she gets the top of her head lopped off. It was a little strange, though, that nobody else noticed Hiro disappear. Although, if he did go back in time, does that mean he never went to the diner in the first place, meaning Ando should never have gone to the diner in the first place? So Ando should have disappeared as well? This is the problem with time travel.

Matt is really boring me despite the fact that he is the only character thus far who is really concerned with where his abilities came from (aside from Ted). Probably because all the other characters discovered their abilities on their own, not after they were drugged and cut and bruised and tattooed. Still, Matt is really boring me and his marital problems are almost hilarious, not depressing.

And finally, Claire's imitation of Jackie (the annoying cheerleader from earlier episodes) was far too funny. That is all.
