Summary

We open in flashback mode. A Young Eko breaks into a storage shed to get his brother, Yemi, something to eat. A nun catches them and brings them into the church. She forces Eko to go to the priest for confession, even though Eko clearly feels that Yemi's hunger made his stealing justified.

On to the present. Sayid has just returned to the beach. He looks in on Eko, who is unconscious and feverous two days after being rescued from the polar bear. Sayid leaves the tent to check in with Locke, and Eko dreams about Yemi's death. Eko wakes to find Yemi in his tent, holding a cigarette lighter. Eko is unable to speak, but Yemi tells him it is time to confess and be judged. Yemi tells Eko that he'll be waiting.

Shift to Charlie, Hurley and Sayid walking to find Locke. They notice that Eko's tent is on fire. Charlie and Hurley get Eko out while Sayid works on putting out the fire. They put Eko down, and he's acting delirious, calling out for Yemi. They go to help with the fire, leaving Eko alone. Before they can get back to him, Eko has disappeared.

Ben brings a white gown-shirt to Jack and asks him to put it on. Ben is already wearing the same type of shirt. Jack surprises Ben by asking about his tumor. Ben tells Jack that he doesn't know what he's talking about, but his body language gives him away. Jack is led to the beach. A funeral is being held for Colleen, and she's put on a floating funeral pyre. Afterwards, Ben asks Elizabeth why she showed Jack his X-rays. She tells him that she didn't tell Jack whose they were, but apparently he did.

The next day, Locke and Desmond tell Sayid that the computer in the hatch wasn't just for pushing the button. Desmond believed it could be used for communicating with the other hatches, and Locke wants to use the computer in the Pearl station to try and contact the Others. Also, there's no sign of Eko, but Charlie tells Locke about Eko's mentioning his brother. He realizes that they're all going to the same place. We cut to Eko, stumbling through the jungle until he collapses.

Flash back to moments after the flashback events from "The 23rd Psalm." Eko is brought back to Yemi's church, after being mistaken for a real priest. He goes into Yemi's church and finds Yemi's Bible, in which he finds a picture of himself and Yemi as young boys. A woman and her son come into the church looking for Father Yemi. Eko tells them that Yemi is gone, called away suddenly due to a problem in the refugee camp. She introduces herself as Amina, a worker at the local clinic, and her son as Daniel, the altar boy for the church. He tells her that he'll be taking Yemi's place. She mentions that Father Yemi was leaving for London at the end of the week, and Eko tells her that he'll be taking Yemi's place there as well.

Back to Eko in the jungle. He wakes and as he gets to his feet, we briefly see the black smoke "security system." From out of nowhere, a man throws a machete at Eko, barely missing his head. Eko grabs the machete and sees more men, all are wounded. A man kneels before Eko, begging for his life. Eko raises the machete to strike the man, but suddenly the man is the boy Daniel. He raises his finger to his lips and says, "shhh. Confess," then disappears. Once again, Eko is alone in the jungle.

Locke invites anyone who wants to come with him to try and find Kate, Jack and Sawyer. Hurley is confused by this since Jack would always pick the people he wanted to accompany him. Locke points out that he's not Jack. Nikki volunteers to go, much to the surprise of Paolo. She tells him he's always complaining about being left out, and now's their chance. Desmond points out that the fact that the computer they're after is in the hatch under the plane wreck that Eko's heading for is a big coincidence. Locke steals a phrase from Eko and tells Desmond, "don't mistake coincidence for fate."

Eko stops for some water, and we flash back to Eko in the church. He's washing his hands in the holy water. Daniel tells him that's a no-no, but he says he's washing away his sins. Gunfire is heard from outside the church. Eko goes out to see what's going on. A truckload of gunmen ride into town, shooting into the air. The leader, Emeka, gets out of the truck and asks for Father Yemi. Amina runs up and tells the warlord that the shipment of vaccine is late. It should arrive later in the week. Eko asks, "what shipment," and Amina explains that when they receive shipments of vaccines, they're allowed to keep 20 percent and Emeka takes the rest for "protection." Eko tells Emeka that he's not afraid of him, and turns to go into the church. Emeka pulls his gun and shoots the woman who was selling Virgin Mary statues. He tells Eko that he'll be back on Friday for the vaccines.

Back to the present, Eko is still kneeling over a river and drinking. He sees the reflection of the smoke monster in the water. He stands to face it and it towers over him, but retreats. Moments later, Locke, Desmond, Sayid, Nikki and Paolo catch up with him.

Juliet brings Jack a cheeseburger for lunch. She seems to be flirting with him when Ben shows up and asks to speak with Jack alone, "doctor-patient confidentiality." He tells Jack that they had a wonderful plan to break him. They were going to wear him down until he no longer believed that they were his enemy, and that he was doing things for them because he wanted to, things like saving Ben's life. Part of that plan was to get Jack to be interested in Juliet, who, at least in their opinion, bears a "striking resemblance" to Jack's ex-wife. With Jack having seen the X-rays, though, that plan had to be abandoned. Now, all Ben can do is ask Jack to "think about it." Before Ben leaves, he asks Jack if he believes in God. Jack doesn't answer, but repeats the question to Ben. Ben explains that two days after he found out he had a tumor on his spine, a spinal surgeon "fell out of the sky." If that isn't proof that there's a God, what is?

The group makes their way toward the plane wreckage. Locke asks Eko if he's looking for Yemi, and Eko freaks out. He pins Locke to a tree, holds a knife to his throat, and warns him never to speak Yemi's name again. Locke asks Eko what he's so afraid of, and we flash back again. Eko visits the clinic, asking about the vaccine shipments. Amina explains that they come from the Red Cross every six months. The militia wants them because they fetch a high price on the black market. She tells Eko not to cross the militia. Before Yemi came, they weren't allowed to keep any of the vaccine. She tells Eko that he reminds her of Father Yemi. "You're a good man, too." Later, we see Eko visit a man outside a bar. He tells the man that he has some vaccine to sell, but it has to be done by Sunday when he's leaving the country.

They reach the wreckage of the plane. Sayid, Desmond, Nikki and Paolo go down the hatch into the Pearl station. Eko and Locke go the wreckage. As they're moving rocks away from the plane entrance, Locke asks Eko what he saw just before they arrived. Locke tells him he's seen it once himself. Eko asks what he saw, and Locke tells him he saw a bright light. "It was beautiful." Eko responds, "that is not what I saw." He goes into the plane, but there's no sign of Yemi's body. Locke goes to join the others in the Pearl station, but Eko elects to remain topside.

Flash back again. Eko is confronted in the church by Emeka and two of his men. He's heard about Eko's attempt to sell the vaccines, and says that if Eko though he wouldn't find out about it, "you don't know who I am." He doesn't like the idea of killing a priest, so he's just going to cut off Eko's hands. He has Eko's hands bound and set before him on the lectern. Emeka raises a machete and swings, but Eko pulls his hands out of the way and strikes one of Emeka's men. The machete embeds itself into the lectern and Emeka gets knocked away from it. Eko grabs the machete, slashes one of Emeka's men across the throat, and hacks off another of his men's arms. Emeka begs for his life. Eko tells him, "you do not know who I am," and brings the machete down on Emeka. Eko stumbles out of the church, bloody machete in hand. The villagers notice him, particularly Amina and Daniel. Eko lets the machete drop to the ground.

In the Pearl, Nikki watches the orientation tape while Sayid checks out the computer wiring. He finds the connection is only one-way, a dead end. Nikki asks the obvious question, "what are these other TVs for?" The tape mentioned that it's a monitoring station for the other projects, plural. Sayid tries patching in the other feeds in hopes of finding a signal in one of the other hatches. Eventually, a picture comes up. It looks much like the computer room from the now-defunct Swan station. There's an Apple II-style computer at a desk and a bank of computers in the background. The camera pans to the right and we find a man wearing an eye patch. He looks into the camera for a moment then disables it. Locke says, "I guess he'll be expecting us."

Juliet brings Jack a movie to watch. He isn't in the mood, but she insists, telling him she'll turn the sound down. As the movie loads into the player, she apologizes for brining him there and for everything that's been done to him and his friends. The film starts, but it isn't "To Kill a Mockingbird" as Juliet said. It's Juliet, and she's holding up a sign that says, "ignore everything I'm saying." As Juliet continues to talk, further signs say, "Ben is a liar. And he is very dangerous. Some of us want a change. But it has to look like an accident. It has to look like we tried to save him. And that's up to you, Jack. It's a complicated surgery. No one would ever know. And I would protect you. Now tell me to turn off the movie." He tells her to turn the movie off, she does, then leaves, telling Jack to think about what she's said.

Eko walks through Yemi's church. The blood has all been washed away, and Daniel sweeps the floor. He asks where Eko is going, and Eko replies, "London." Daniel then asks if Eko is a "bad man," because his mother says he is. Eko answers that only God knows. Outside the church, the vaccine shipment has arrived. Amina tells him that the men he killed will be replaced by other men. Men from the village start to board up the church. Amina explains that the church is no longer sacred, and can no longer be used. She tells Eko to go to London and repent, because he owes God for every life he's taken, and also that he owes Yemi one church.

On the island, Eko waits for the others to finish in the hatch. He stares at Yemi's crucifix, and looks up to see Yemi standing in front of him. Yemi walks off into the jungle and Eko follows, calling after him. He asks why Yemi wants to hear his confession now, and finds Yemi standing in a clearing. He asks Eko if he is ready, and Eko says he is. Eko holds up Yemi's crucifix and places it in Yemi's hand. He says, "I ask for no forgiveness, Father, for I have not sinned. I have only done what I needed to do to survive." He tells Yemi about the boy that asked him if he was a bad man. If he could answer now, he would tell that boy about killing a man to save his brother's life, something he's not sorry for. In fact, he's proud of it. Eko gets down on his knees in front of Yemi, and tells him he didn't ask for the life he was given, but he did the best he could with that life anyway.

Yemi says, "you speak to me as if I were your brother," and beings to walk off. Eko asks, "who are you?" and follows. There's no sign of Yemi in the jungle, but we hear and see "smokey." Finally, Eko sees it, too. It towers above him and he starts to recite the 23rd Psalm. The smoke grabs Eko and starts bashing him against the trees. In the Pearl, the commotion can be heard and the group starts running for the exit. The smoke raises Eko high into the air and slams him into the ground before letting him go. By the time Locke reaches Eko, the smoke is gone. Eko is barely alive. He tries to tell Locke something, and Locke has to get close to hear. We get one last flashback of a young Eko and young Yemi walking off together, then Eko dies. Sayid asks what Eko said, and Locke tells him, "we're next."
