Summary

Kate, Jack, Sayid and Juliet make their way back toward the survivors' beach. They stop to make camp for the night, and Jack and Kate go off to find firewood, leaving Juliet with Sayid. Kate asks Jack about the week he spent with the Others. He says he had a deal with Ben that if he'd take care of him, Ben would send him home. He just did what he was told and didn't ask any questions. Kate doesn't look like she quite buys it.

Sayid asks Juliet the questions we've all been wanting to ask. What are the Others doing on the island? Why are they terrorizing them? What's with the lists and with kidnapping children? He says he wants to know everything, but first, he wants to know who Juliet is.

Flash back. Juliet and Rachel drive up to a guard station. Juliet identifies herself as working for Mittelos Bioscience. Rather than letting Juliet drive in, Ethan and Richard meet them at the gate. Juliet remarks that she didn't realize that there was an airport located there. Richard introduces himself to Rachel and thanks her for allowing them to borrow her sister for a few months. Due to security reasons, they can't allow Rachel to come any farther. Juliet and Rachel say their goodbyes. We learn that Rachel's cancer is in remission, and Juliet promises to be back before Rachel gives birth.

Back to the question at hand, Julie tells Sayid that if she told him who she was and everything she knows, he'd kill her. Sayid asks what she thinks he'll do if she doesn't tell. Jack shows up and tells Sayid to back off. Juliet will answer his questions when she's ready. As of now, Juliet is under Jack's protection. As you can imagine, this doesn't sit well with either Kate or Sayid.

On the beach, Charlie picks up Aaron and has to wake Claire when she doesn't hear Aaron crying. She's not feeling well, so Charlie takes Aaron so that Claire can get some more rest.

In the jungle, Jack tries to tell Juliet that his friends will eventually come around to her. She points out that her people kept Sayid chained to a swing set for three days, and she handcuffed Kate and dragged her into the jungle. Their coming around could take a while.

Flash back. Juliet waits in the Herarat Aviation terminal. She, Richard and Ethan are the only ones there besides the terminal employees. Ethan asks if he can take her vitals. Richard pours her a glass of orange juice, then puts a packet of powder in the juice. He tells her the powder is a tranquilizer, and that she's going to want to be asleep for the trip, which Ethan says can be "kind of intense."

Juliet begins to balk at the idea of a tranquilizer. She points out that she's put up with a great deal of secrecy already, agreeing to not contact anyone she knows for six months even though no one in the medical community has ever heard of Mittelos Bioscience.

Richard asks why she's been fine with all of that in the first place? They aren't paying her that much. He tells her he thinks she's been fine because she knows that the place they're taking her is "special." He tells her that she has a gift and asks her if she doesn't believe that she should do something significant with it. He tells her that where they're going, she can do just that, even if he can't tell her where that is. She drinks the orange juice and passes out.

Juliet wakes on board the submarine. Ethan greets her and unstraps her, telling her that she had to be strapped in because the last leg of the journey "gets a little bumpy." She climbs up out of the sub to find see her new home. Ben walks up the dock and welcomes her to the island, saying that he's looking forward to working with her.

On the beach, Claire wakes with a huge headache. Sawyer (pleasantly) agrees to get her some aspirin. As he goes to get the medicine, he sees Jack arrive a camp, followed by Kate, then by Sayid. Greetings are exchanged between the returning survivors and the people of the camp. Even Sawyer gives Jack a hug, though he saves his biggest welcome for Kate. Sawyer's also the first to see Juliet arrive, and he's none too thrilled.

After the greetings are all over, Hurley comes to sit with Juliet on the beach. He's been assigned to watch her while the rest of the castaways talk about her. He tells her he doesn't remember her from the dock. She says she had that day off. He tells her that he hears she's a doctor, and she explains that she's more of a researcher. He tells her that when Ethan came and kidnapped Claire, Charlie got "upset." He points out where Ethan is buried.

Flash back to an operating room. A woman in on the operating table, her monitor has flat lined. Ethan pronounces her dead and tells Juliet that he's sorry. Goodwin is there, too. He tells her that she tried, and that he'll talk to Ben.

Juliet sits by the ocean. Ben comes to talk to her. He reminds her that the woman chose to get pregnant and knew the risks. Juliet tells Ben that she thinks "it" happens at conception, and if that's the case there's nothing she can do about it, at least not on the island. The only way to test that theory is to take a woman off the island and back to Miami. Ben won't even consider taking anyone off the island. That being the case, Juliet says there's nothing else she can do there. Her sister is due to give birth in three months, and she wants to go home.

Ben tells Juliet that her sister's cancer has returned. She won't live long enough to give birth. He has documentation to prove it. Ben tells Juliet that she has a choice of going home and spending time with Rachel in her final days, or Juliet can stay and help with their problem. If Juliet chooses to stay, Ben claims that they'll cure Rachel's cancer. Juliet doesn't believe that they can do that. Ben points out that in all of the medical workups that she's done on the island, not a single person has a trace of cancer. Juliet says that's because of the island, and they won't let her bring Rachel to the island. Ben assures her that "Jacob said he would take care of it himself." That seems to cary some weight. Ben reiterates his proposition. If Juliet stays, they'll save Rachel's life.

The powwow over Juliet continues. Sun asks why they should trust her when she's one of them. Jack insists that since they left her behind, she no longer is one of them. Charlie asks where they went. Jack doesn't know and says that Juliet doesn't know either. Sawyer proposes having Sayid torture her and see what he can get out of her. Sayid tells Sawyer he doesn't do that anymore (since he did it to Sawyer and to Ben, of course), but he doesn't trust her, either. If she's innocent, then why won't she answer their questions? Jack says she's afraid, and they should give her some time. He thinks the fact that he trusts her should be enough. Sayid tells him it's not.

Desmond asks where Locke went. Jack says he went with the others, right after blowing up the sub that was going to take him off the island. The idea that Jack made a deal with Ben to leave the island doesn't sit well with the others, despite Jacks assurances that he was going to come back with help.

Claire walks up during the discussion and collapses. Jack and Charlie take her to a bed to check her out. Juliet watches from a distance and asks Sun and Jin what happened to Claire. Jin replies (through Sun), "what do you care?" Juliet goes to Kate and asks her to get Jack for her. She thinks she knows what's wrong with Claire? How would she know? "Because I did it to her."

Juliet explains to Jack that Claire is having a delayed immune reaction to a medication that she designed to keep Claire alive during the late stages of her pregnancy. Women on the island can't have babies, their bodies treat the pregnancy as a foreign invader. She witnessed it over and over. Every pregnant woman on the island died, except Claire.

After the plane crash, Ethan infiltrated their camp and began drawing blood samples. Even though Claire didn't conceive on the island, she showed the same symptoms, so they tried to save her life. Juliet developed a serum that she thought would reverse the symptoms. Ethan was administering the injections. When Hurley discovered that Ethan wasn't on the plane, he decided, on his own, to kidnap Claire. It wasn't supposed to happen that way. Juliet tells Jack and Kate that Ethan kept a supply of serum near the caves. If she leaves now, she can get the serum and be back before it's too late. Kate doesn't seem to buy her story, but Jack tells Juliet to go.

Flash back. Juliet is in bed with Goodwin. She realizes that the next day will mark three years on the island for her. He kisses her and tells her that he'd better bake a cake. There's a knock on the door. We next see Juliet looking over Ben's x-rays, which she had Karl develop for her. She goes to Ben and tells him about the tumor on his spine. He'd complained about back pain, and she'd expected to find a fracture or herniated disc, but found a tumor instead.

Juliet wonders, if they can cure cancer, then why does Ben look frightened by his tumor? She calls him a liar for telling her that they can cure cancer, since Ben seems to have it. Ben insists that he's he hasn't lied. The have a bit of a screaming match. Juliet just wants to go home. She pleads with Ben to let her go home, but he refuses.

Back to the present. Juliet finds a marked tree and, underneath, a case. Sayid and Sawyer have followed her with guns. They tell her to get away from the case. She does, and she tells them that it contains medical supplies for Claire. Sawyer opens the case, and it seems to have what she said it would.

Sayid reminds her of her earlier claim that if she told him everything she knew, he'd kill her. He says that now's the time to see if she was right. Juliet tells them that they don't have time for this, but Sawyer insists that they've got all the time in the world. Juliet goes on the offensive. She finds it interesting that Sawyer and Sayid now consider themselves the morality police. She asks Sayid how long it took before he told everyone on the beach exactly how many people he had tortured. She asks if he's ever told them about Basra. She tells Sawyer that she's sure the first thing he did after the crash was tell everyone about the man he'd shot the night before he got on the plane. She tells them that she's going to take the case to Claire, and they're going to let her, because the last thing either of them needs is more blood on their hands.

Flash back. We get a sequence from the beginning of the season, with Juliet preparing for, then holding the book club meeting, and the Others witnessing the breakup of Flight 815. After Ben sends Ethan and Goodwin off to infiltrate any groups of survivors, we get new footage. Ben takes Juliet to the communications station. Mikhail is viewing news feeds about the missing Oceanic Flight 815. Ben tells him he wants detailed files on every single passenger. Mikhail is already working on that.

Mikhail has also rigged a satellite uplink to Richard in Acadia park. Richard uses a camera to show Juliet a newspaper with that day's date on it (Sept. 22, 2004). He then shows her a playground where Rachel plays with her son, Julian. After a few moments, Ben tells Richard that he should get back to the island as soon as possible because they may have new visitors. The transmission cuts off, and Ben tells Juliet that he's not a liar.

Juliet still wants to go home. Ben tells her that wasn't their agreement. She has to stay until she completes her work. Juliet tells Ben that what he's asking her to do is impossible. She says the mothers keep dying. Then, he says, they'll find more mothers. Maybe there were even some on the plane.

Juliet shows up at Claire's tent with the case. Charlie doesn't want to let Juliet anywhere near Claire. Juliet did this to Claire, so why should he trust her. Jack says that he trusts her and asks if Charlie trusts him. He does. Jack asks Charlie to give them a few minutes with Claire to administer the serum. Before Juliet injects Claire, he tells her that if the serum doesn't work, or if something happens to Claire, he won't be able to protect her anymore. She'll be on her own. She tells Jack that she's already on her own and gives Claire the injection.

When Claire wakes up, she's back to normal. Jack brings Juliet a tarp, blankets and airline pillows. He gives her the good news about Claire, and tells her that the group is okay with her setting up camp with them, at least for now. He tells her that they're willing to give her the benefit of a doubt, but eventually they'll want some answers. She asks Jack why he doesn't seem to need answers and why she never has to explain herself to him. He tells her that when the sub exploded he could see in her eyes that there was nothing in the world she wanted more than to get off the island, and that makes her "one of us."

As Juliet sets up her shelter, we get one final flashback. Juliet discusses a plan with Ben. She's to take Kate out into the jungle, handcuff herself to her, and tell her she was gassed, too. If Kate catches her in the lie, she'll admit to it and tell her it was the only way to earn her trust. Then she'll go with the castaways to their beach. She tells Ben that after everything they've done to the castaways, it's going to be a problem. Ben explains that Claire's implant has been activated, so by the time they get back to the beach, there'll be a crisis situation. They've planted medicine at Ethan old drop point that will allow Juliet to save Claire. Ben hands Juliet a gas mask, then tells her he'll see her in a week and rolls off in his wheelchair.

Review

So we get a little bit more information on our Dr. Burke. In typical Lost fashion, though, we're left with as many new questions as we've gotten answers. If she can be believed, Claire was never intended to have been kidnapped. We didn't get that through a flash back, though, just as something Juliet told Jack and Kate. Maybe it's true and maybe it's something she made up to deflect some of the lostaway's anger toward her.

We found out a bit about the "history" between Ben and Juliet. It was reasonable to assume that the history was romantic in nature, but that doesn't appear to have been the case, of course, there's still several years worth of time on the island that we don't know about, so that could be there, too. Despite the apparent truth in Ben's word that Jacob would cure Rachel's cancer, Juliet's question of Ben is still a good one. If the people that Ben is associated with can cure cancer, then why does he need a spinal surgeon for his tumor? We never heard the result of the biopsy of the tumor, so maybe it wasn't cancerous, but how likely is that?

Speaking of Jacob, his name keeps popping up. Hopefully we'll find out a bit about him before the season ends. He apparently decides who ends up on the "good person" list. His name was flashed on the screen during Karl's brainwashing session in the message, "God loves you as he loved Jacob." Ben seems to have tremendous faith in Jacob, and either Juliet did, too, or she was afraid to voice any doubt.

The level of communication that the Others had before Desmond used the failsafe in the Swan makes me wonder whether Ben really understood what would happen if Locke stopped entering the numbers into the computer. Clearly, Ben used that as a way to cause Locke to doubt himself, but would Ben have gone down that path if he'd known just how much he and his people could lose?

We know that Juliet wants to leave the island. We know why. With the revelation that she's with our lostaways as a part of Ben's plan, what we don't know is who's side she's really on. My guess is that she's on the side of whomever she thinks stands the best chance of getting her off the island. Either way, it'll be interesting to see what it is she's supposed to accomplish in the few days left before Ben's week is up, and in what form is that reunion supposed to take place? Is she supposed to leave camp and return to the Others, or are the Others coming for her?
