Summary

After a quick recap of important happenings in episodes past, including Vala's kidnapping and Daniel's adventures as an Ori Prior, the penultimate episode of Stargate: SG-1 begins. In a crowded but unnamed bar Vala sits opposite a long-haired man at a table playing some sort of game with little triangular chips. She goes all-in, using her wrist-activated cloak of invisibility as collateral against her opponent's cargo ship. When she wins, however, she is promptly searched and after the patrons discover she actually has a few cards up her sleeve, a dozen weapons are quickly aimed at her head. Suddenly, all the weaponry in the room is pulled to the ceiling.

Adria has arrived.

(After the opening credits.)

Adria explains her return by stating that her work is unfinished. She then throws everyone Vala out of the tavern. Poor Vala cannot catch a break. Not only did she lose her game but Adria has explained that SG-1's attack on the Ori was unsuccessful. Lots of ships are under construction and Adria is sure.

NOTE: Flashback alert!

A pajama-clad Vala rushes in on Daniel with the exciting news that she has solved the mystery of the Clava Thessar Infinatus. The answer came in a dream (in which Vala was participating in Dancing with the Stars). Somehow, the Earth symbol for infinity encircles some numbers that correspond to a gate address. Teal'c worries that Adria is once again trying to trap them. Still, Vala is able to convince General Landry to send a team to check things out.

He sends two teams. They return through the gate under heavy fire. It was an ambush. They were attacked by Ori soldiers and two men were killed. That night, Vala had the same dream with one major difference: the symbol for infinity was rotated another way. The rest of the team insists that Adria is using Vala. Even Daniel will not stick by Vala. She is put under guard in her room as a potential security risk. Not only will she be removed from the team, she will be confined at Area 51.

Adria is not buying the whole story. Vala continues, however, explaining that she stole the wrist-activated cloak of invisibility and was able to use it to escape through the stargate. And before Adria showed up, Vala had won a cargo ship. Now she has nothing. Adria asks Vala to join her -- Adria wants to find the Clava Thessar Infinatus. However, before she left Earth, Vala overheard SG-1 planning to check out the second gate address using the Odyssey rather than the stargate. Adria insists on using the stargate in order to overtake SG-1.

When Adria and Vala exit the stargate, they find themselves at the receiving end of SG-1 and a contingent of heavily-armed soldiers. Vala quickly professes her ignorance and snaps at Daniel. Mitchell smugly informs Adria that her powers are useless and that everything is going according to the plan. Suddenly, a dozen or so jaffa warriors beam in, surrounding SG-1 & Co. They are working for Ba'al. Mitchell tells everyone to stand down and one of the jaffa walks up to Adria puts something on her arm, and they all teleport away, leaving SG-1 scratching their heads.

Aboard Ba'al's mother ship, Adria is informed that her powers are still useless. Although she insists that she will.

(After a commercial.)

Mitchell debriefs Colonel Landry alongside Teal'c and they all wonder what Adria and Ba'al are doing together. Colonel Landry asks after Vala and is told she is pissed. Daniel and Sam sit her down and explain that everything that happened to her was part of a plan. It turns out the plan involved implanting a memory in Vala's mind. She even recorded a video to herself to explain what happened. Convincing Adria that Vala was not lying necessitated for her to truly believe everything she was saying.

Back aboard Ba'al's mother ship, Adria insists that Ba'al has made a terrible mistake. And she calls him a fool. Ba'al retorts with the information that her army will not be able to find her. And her wants that army. Adria is certain that there is nothing Ba'al can do to force her to allow him to use her army. He flashes his Goa’uld eyes at her and smiles.

At the SGC, an Agent Barrett brings some exciting news: the Ba'al clones are planning a convention. General Landry sends SG-1 and a marine unit to check things out. Moments later, SG-1 lies atop a stone wall looking own at a vast army of jaffa -- all dead. When they head down to investigate, they discover no wounds and no signs of combat. Symbiote poisoning, it seems. But the jaffa were not the target: the Ba'al clones were. Over a dozen clones lie slumped over on a table. All dead.

Back on the mother ship, Ba'al pulls an angry Goa’uld larva out of its tank and smiles his creepy smile at Adria.

(After a commercial.)

A lone jaffa survived Ba'al's attack. He is quickly taken out by a zat blast from Vala. The jaffa was hooked on tretonin and had no symbiote to poison. Back at the SGC, General Landry is informed of the latest developments. The jaffa confirms everything: Ba'al was behind the attacks on the clones. He also shares with them the location of Ba'al's mother ship. SG-1 and the Odyssey are sent to find the mother ship and bring back Adria.

Mitchell pulls Vala aside and tells her she can sit this mission out. There may be a need to kill Adria. Vala has no problems with that, however, and stays on the mission. Thanks to the cloaking ability of the Odyssey, the ship is able to get quite close to the mother ship. The radiation generated by the anti-Prior device is detected onboard and SG-1 beams in. They take out the guards with ease and bust in, killing Ba'al. Vala quickly zats Adria, Daniel blows the lock with a staff blast, and Sam shoots down a few jaffa running to the rescue. They are all beamed back to the Odyssey, which promptly flies off.

The team is taking no chances with Adria and have securely bound her to a chair. When she wakes up, they tell her that it is all over. When she responds, her voice has that lovely Goua'uld reverberation and her eyes flash with the power of the symbiote inside her. Adria is no longer available.

(After a commercial.)

SG-1 informs General Landry of Ba'al's infestation of Adria. Teal'c's plan is to kill them both. But that may not stop Adria's army. Sam suggests removing Ba'al and suppressing Adria's consciousness with one of the Tok'ra. It sounds like a solid plan. Mitchell and Teal'c have a little chat with Ba'al-as-Adria and learn that his plan was to order Adria's army out of the galaxy. He confirms that the Ori are dead and suggests a partnership. He offers all of Adria's knowledge, which would be lost if they kill him and her.

The Tok’ra contingent arrive, led by Ta'seem, along with a symbiote named Zanuf. Daniel hits Ba'al-as-Adria with a zat blast and his/her body is brought to the infirmary to remove Ba'al and swap in Zanuf. While the rest of SG-1 watches the surgery, Vala walks out and Daniel promptly follows. He wants to know if she is really okay with what is happening to Adria. But Vala insists that Adria is not her daughter and she has no qualms with what is happening.

Something starts to go wrong in the surgery and the gang heads back to the infirmary. By the time they get there, Ba'al has been removed but Adria has been poisoned. The kindest thing to do at this point is hit her with some more of the toxin in order to kill her quickly. Vala wants to be at her side when she passed and Daniel joins her. Ta'seem injects the toxin but before it can take affect, Adria wakes up, knocks out the guards, tosses Daniel out of the room and locks the door. Vala is left alone with a very angry Adria.

(After a commercial).

The infirmary has been sealed off from the rest of the ship. Fortunately, Adria's body really is dying. She wants to use what little time she has left to prepare for ascension. Mitchell and Teal'c attempt to cut through a bulkhead with a torch as Vala tries to convince Adria not to ascend. Mitchell gets through the bulkhead but find the door to the infirmary locked. Adria is apparently holding it shut with her mind. Mitchell and Teal'c grab crowbars and attempt to manhandle the door open. Meanwhile, Adria has released toxic coolant near Daniel. Vala grabs a gun but before she can do anything with it Adria tosses the gun aside and begins choking Vala.

Thankfully, Adria passes out before she can kill Vala. As the rest of the team rushes towards the infirmary, Vala watches as Adria begins to ascend. The brilliance of the light is blinding but momentary. When it dissipates, Adria is gone. It is too late.

Back on Earth, the team thinks things over with General Landry. They have no idea what she will do. If the Ori are dead, as Ba'al contends, she will have all their power. If they are still alive, she may simply join them. And one of Ba'al's clones may still be alive. So, in the end, despite killing both Adria and Ba'al in the same day, exactly what SG-1 accomplished is still up in the air. Nevertheless, Vala is certain that the Ori have been set back a few steps.

Review

Finally, after three or four episodes unrelated to the Ori storyline, the second-to-last episode of Stargate SG-1 returns to the threat posed by Adria with a bang. The idea of Vala being implanted with false memories to trick Adria was a good one and the video Vala recorded before starting the mission was hilarious. "Wonko" is a great word and Daniel's off-camera instructions were amusing. But the real genius of the episode was Ba'al's plan to place a symbiote in Adria. What a smart guy, that Ba'al. First he takes out all his clones to consolidate his power and then he brings Adria under his control. Brilliant!

Too bad his plan came to a rather abrupt end. He must have known that SG-1 would come after Adria. Was he hoping they would see the inherent logic of his plan and allow him to stay in Adria's body? Or was he simply unable to consider the possibility that SG-1 would find his mother ship and capture Adria (with him inside) as quickly as they did? It seems hard to believe that SG-1 would be able to get the drop on Ba'al at exactly the moment when he has been implanted in Adria -- meaning the anti-Ori device was still powered up. So, unless Ba'al wanted to be captured by SG-1, the timing in this episode is just a tad suspect.

More important than Ba'al's master plan is the status of the Ori. According to Adria, they are still alive. According to Ba'al, they are dead. Neither are trustworthy sources and both had very good reasons to lie. It would be nice to think the Ori are out of the picture because an ascended Adria is still a nasty foe. Her army is vast and she is most likely very angry about her body dying. All in all, the best part of this episode was the reverb added to Morena Baccarin’s voice, which is sultry enough all by its lonesome. The worst part of this episode was the number of episodes that passed before this one. Too much of Season Ten was "wasted" on standalone stories.
