Summary

We open with Vala in labor on one of the Ori ships. After the baby is born, a servant says “she is beautiful,.” but before Vala can see the child, the servant takes the child out of the room. A Prior enters and proclaims the child is “the beacon of light in the darkness” and “she will lead us to glorious to victory against any and all nonbelievers.” The Ori ships then enter hyperspace.

Next, we see Sam still floating in front of the super gate She is frantically trying to establish communication with any Earth or ally ship still left after the battle. Finally, Mitchell answers her as he is beginning to regain consciousness. Mitchell then remembers the events that took place just before the Korolev was destroyed. He managed to get into a F-302 and escape just in time. Sam asks him about Daniel, but he tells her that he thinks Daniel was still on board. Suddenly, Colonel Emerson contacts them from the Odyssey. Emerson informs them that they managed to get safely away to monitor the Ori ships as they entered hyperspace. Teal'c then hails the Odyssey. Emerson asks him if they can take some survivors, but Teal'c is overrun by Lucian Alliance troops. As Mitchell and Emerson are walking through the Odyssey, Emerson is bringing Mitchell up to speed on the current situation when the bridge calls, informing Emerson they have regained contact with the Lucian Alliance mother ship. Netan demands Emerson surrender the Odyssey or they will destroy it. Mitchell tries to talk Netan out of his threat, but Netan refuses to listen.

Meanwhile, on one of the Ori ships, Vala is in a bed in her quarters and is in pain. Her husband enters and she demands to see her daughter, and he says they have agreed to allow her to see her daughter. The door suddenly opens, and a girl of about four years old enters the room. The girl walks to up Vala and places her hand on Vala's stomach and eases pain she is having. The child also senses Vala does not believe in the Ori. Back at the SGC, Bra'tac comes through the stargate and informs General Landry that the battle did not go well and that the Ori laid waste to all in their path. Back on the Odyssey, Mitchell and Kvasir are trying to get the Asgard transporter working, but are unsuccessful. Mitchell then decides to try “Plan B,” which means taking the Odyssey to Sam and allowing her to float into one of the hangar bays. She doesn't think it's going to work, but Mitchell has confidence it will. On the Lucian Alliance mother ship, Netan blames Teal'c for all that has happened. He tells Teal'c that he's very angry and will feel better by inflicting Teal'c a great deal of pain. Meanwhile, the Odyssey, being piloted by Mitchell and Kvasir, slowly makes it way to Sam. She floats into the hangar bay and is “landed” onto the floor. In the Odyssey's infirmary, Major Marks and Mitchell show Sam the data from the Korolev's flight recorder. It shows the Korolev's ring transport was activated. We then flashback to the battle, to the bridge of the Korolev. They come up with a plan to use the ship's ring transport to transport a warhead on board one of the Ori ships. Daniel makes his way to the transport platform, but before the plan is ready, the Korolev is hit with the fatal shot that destroys it. With mere seconds to act, Daniel sets the rings for the Ori ship and beams on board

Meanwhile at the SGC, Landry is briefing Woolsey about the situation. Woolsley tells Landry that the IOA is considering bringing the ZPM from Atlantis to Earth to power the Antarctic defenses. Landry says it could take up to three weeks to get the ZPM back to Earth, and that there is no guarantee that the platform would work. Back on the Ori ship, Vala goes to visit her daughter. Vala is astonished at how much more she has aged, and comments that at her current rate she will have a very short life. She tell Vala that she is very hungry and the two sit down to eat. Vala asks her if she has a name, and she replies they call her Orici. When asked what she would like to call her, Vala says she would name her after her own mother, Adria. Her daughter likes that name, and decides to take that as her name. Adria says Vala is trying to humanize her by naming her, and that the Ori have woven all their knowledge into her genetic makeup (at least all the knowledge that a human can comprehend). She says she is the closest she can be to an Ori in flesh and blood. Adria says that the Ancients are the ones who have lied to everyone, and that they have kept the basic truths of existence. Adria also says that the Ancients are the ones who created humans to use as power in an effort to destroy the Ori. She says that's why all those who refuse to see the true path must be destroyed.

Back at the Odyssey, two more Lucian Alliance mother ships drop out of hyperspace. Netan hails them again, demanding they surrender or be destroyed. Just as the Lucian Alliance ships are about to open fire, three more mother ships drop out of hyperspace behind the Odyssey. They are Jaffa ships, commanded by Bra'tac. Instead of fighting, the other Lucian Alliance ships destroy their damaged mother ship and flee. Carter and Kvasir are able to transport Teal'c off the mother ship before it is destroyed. On the Ori ship, Daniel finds Vala as she is leaving Adria 's quarters. Vala explains to Daniel about Adria and how she is the Ori's way of cheating so prevent any action from the Ancients. Vala also says that part of Adria wants to be accepted by her mother. Vala also thinks they can use that somehow against Adria . Suddenly, Adria 's husband enters the room, but Daniel is able to hide in time. The Ori ship then comes out of hyperspace, and her husband leaves the room because he is called to duty.

On the Odyssey, Bra'tac reports that the Ori ships have been found. They are in orbit over Chulak. The Ori destroy the mother ship in orbit around the planet, and launch fighters to destroy any other ships and defenses. Cameron and Sam decide to go with Teal'c and Bra'tac to Chulak in the hope that Daniel is still alive on one of the Ori ships. On Chulak, Daniel and Vala come up with a plan to capture Adria and try to turn her against the Ori. Unfortunately as they are leaving, Vala's husband overhears their conversation. Meanwhile, SG-1 and Bra'tac devise a plan to use their mother ship's ring transport and transport a Jaffa explosive onto one of the Ori ships as it fires its main weapon. Sam points out the Korolev was trying to do with before it was destroyed because of a fluctuation that was discovered in the Ori ship's shields. Daniel and Vala come up with their plan to kidnap Adria , and Vala enters Adria 's quarters. By this time, she has aged even more, and has began to show some Ori power. She is able to light two torches with her mind. Meanwhile, the Jaffa ships come out of hyperspace and engage the Ori ships in orbit over Chulak. Sam sends a signal out to any possible survivors of the Korolev, and Daniel answers her. She tells him that they're in orbit, but he requests radio silence because he's in the middle of his plan. Within moments, one of the Jaffa mother ships is destroyed by the Ori ship. Mitchell and Teal'c transport the bomb over, but nothing happens.

On the ship, Vala gives Daniel the signal to enter, but unfortunately Vala's husband has captured Daniel and brings him into the room. He tells Adria that they were conspiring against her, but she admits she knew and orders Daniel killed. Vala tries to stop it, but when her husband fires, she steps into the beam and is shot. He and Adria rush over to her, and Adria begins to heal her, but Daniel uses this opportunity and shoots Adria and Vala's husband. Over Chulak, the second Jaffa mother ship is destroyed and Bra'tac decides to ram the Ori ship. Cameron and Sam try to talk Bra'tac out of the suicide plan, but it Suddenly, the Odyssey comes out of hyperspace and beams everyone off the mother ship just before it rams the Ori ship. Back on the planet, a Prior enters the room, but before he is able to act against Daniel and Vala, they are beamed onto the Odyssey, and the Odyssey enters hyperspace.

On the Odyssey, SG-1 and Vala are talking about the current situation. When Teal'c mentions about this being a war, Mitchell says that it's not a war. He says it's just a lot of winning by the bad guys. Carter then mentions about when they first opened the gate the Goa'uld dominated the galaxy and had a substantial technological advantage and they overcame it. Mitchell says he doesn't think they need to give up, but come up with a new plan.

Review

After coming off one of the best episodes in Stargate: SG-1 history, “Flesh and Blood” does a fine job explaining the aftermath of the “Wolf 359-like” battle that was the season nine cliffhanger. We are presented with a new single enemy – Adria . The Ori have began open warfare in our galaxy, and have apparently conquered Chulak. “Flash and Blood” has no problem sustaining the momentum that was achieved at the end of season nine.

One thing I really liked about this episode is that we are presented with a weakness in the Ori ships, or Achilles heel in reference to the shield fluctuation when they fire their primary weapon. When SG-1 tries to capitalize on this plan, it doesn't work. All through the series we see SG-1 capitalizing on a weakness of the Goa'uld but now things aren't going their way. I like to see a change of pace like this in a series. It reminds me of the first part of season six of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

As usual, the casting done for the guest characters was superb. The actresses portraying the various ages of Adria played their roles well, and even had some resemblance to Claudia Black. Eric Steinberg is also doing a fine job with Netan. I especially liked his scene with Teal'c when he said he was very angry and was going to torture Teal'c. Also, Michael Shanks and Claudia Black once again work great with each other during their scenes.

I also liked the little details that showed up in “Flesh and Blood.” Vala telling Daniel that Adria was really Vala's stepmother and a “witch of a woman” instead of the story she told Adria was a nice touch. Also the scene with Mitchell putting the transport beacon on Bra'tac's shoulder reminded me of the scene in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country when Spock put the Verdian patch on Kirk's shoulder. The mention of the ZPM from Atlantis was a nice nod to inner-series continuity.

I really didn't find many things wrong with “Flesh and Blood,” except maybe they tried to cram too much information into one episode. It did seem at times things were rushed, and the SGC scenes with Landry probably could have cut out. But overall, “Flesh and Blood” is a good beginning to season ten.
