Summary

When we last left our heroes things had gone from bad to worse in a remarkably short amount of time. After brilliantly working through a variety of traps and puzzles, SG-1 discovered they had been tricked by Adria. She forced Daniel to work with her in order to find the sangraal. Instead, they wind up trapped inside a mountain facing a fire-breathing dragon.

Thankfully, Adria is able to use her personal force shield to protect the whole group from a massive wave of flame. A hole is blown upon in the rock face and they all rushes through it. Although the dragon cannot follow them, his flame certainly can. After making there way through a series of tunnels, the SG-1 and the others find themselves back outside the mountain. Adria wants to go back inside, certain that the dragon is the final test. Ba'al is equally certain that trying to fight the dragon would be tantamount to suicide. Unfortunately for everyone, the dragon bursts through the top of the mountain and comes after them.

With the dragon baring down on them, the team opens fire and then makes a mad dash for the relative protection of a nearby forest. Daniel realizes that Adria was right -- the dragon was the final test. But Ba'al was lying about knowing the dragon's name. After coming up with a series of potential names (Darrell, Smokey, Puff) for the dragon, Mitchell gathers the teams C-4 and prepares to somehow place it underneath the dragon. Teal'c will have none of it and convinces Mitchell to give him the C-4. With Carter manning the remote, Teal'c runs into the clearing. But the C-4 has no affect.

As Teal'c runs back to the forest, Daniel realizes that they do not need the name of the dragon but the name of the person who came up with the whole shebang: Morgan La Fey. Before anyone can stop her, Vala rushes off into the clearing and yells Morgan's name. Nothing happens. Feebly, she tries Darrell. Thankfully, Daniel saves the day by yelling out Morgan's name in Ancient. The dragon disappears. They head back into the mountain, hoping the sangraal will be waiting for them. But once again the sangraal is a hologram. Suddenly, everyone but Adria disappears. They have been transported to another chamber where they find the body of Myrddin a.k.a. Merlin stuck in a wall.

Daniel posits the Merlin has been in the wall for some thousand years. As they try to find a way to revive him, Vala is almost caught by one of the ancient mind downloading device things. Activating the device revived Merlin, although he is weak and may take some time to fully wake up. So the team decides to have a look around. It turns out they were transported to another planet. And Adria is certainly capable of tracking them.

Still inside the cave, Daniel regales Vala with a tale comparing the real Merlin with the mythological Merlin. He thinks that Morgan destroyed the sangraal and stuck Merlin in the wall to protect him. Leaving Teal'c to guard the gate, Mitchell and the others return to the chamber just in time to find Merlin wake up. He thinks SG-1 are his old friends Galahad and Percival and such. Merlin silences an annoying Ba'al and settles down to be caught up by Daniel.

Back on the planet, Adria prepares to track down SG-1. The village is to be burnt for not accepting the teachings of the Ori.

Daniel explains everything to Merlin about what they have learned and experienced to date, including his own stint at being ascended. Merlin freezes up momentarily, allowing Mitchell and the others to return again. Before he joins them, Merlin wants a guarantee that the group will do whatever is necessary to stop the Ori. Mitchell agrees and Merlin springs into action. More precisely, he activates the ancient device and starts doing something with base molecules before tiring out after a few hours. Suddenly, there is a mysterious, shifty glow inside the chamber and Teal'c calls for Mitchell and Carter to join him. They have transported to another planet, this one cold and snowy. And they are still stuck.

Merlin shares his life story with Daniel and Vala, from his early days in Atlantis to his return to mortal form to finish out the rest of his life. The one thing he has learned: there is never enough time. He was frozen in time too long and his body is too weak to continue. But he gets to his feet and activates the ancient device again after saying good luck to Daniel. Then he is thrown backwards and hits the floor. Dead.

With Merlin dead, Ba'al can talk again. And he thinks he can fiddle with the DHD and get them off the planet. So Mitchell & Co. head out to the stargate to try to get it working, leaving Daniel and Vala to try to figure out why Merlin said "good luck" before dying. Daniel decides that Merlin must have used the ancient device to store the necessary information to build the sangraal. Before Vala can stop him, Daniel trusts his face into device. Vala calls for help and Mitchell rushes into the chamber to find Jackson unconscious.

Meanwhile, Adria and her motley crew of Ori soldiers and a prior have come to the desert planet where the SG-1 first found Merlin. And she is certain she can track them. Back on the ice planet, Ba'al is not having all that much luck with the DHD and wants to quit. Suddenly, the DHD starts dialing in and everyone is transported to another planet. This one is a creepy jungle locale. Merlin's body is gone and Daniel is sitting up. The first thing he says? Mitchell does look like Percival. Daniel has Merlin's memories in his head now and is a bit confused. More importantly, he knows how to build a sangraal. Merlin gave him the knowledge to build the sangraal. And Daniel is certain he can do it and starts playing around with the same base molecules Merlin was working with before he passed away.

Adria is now at the frozen planet where Merlin's body was found. Each time the planet relocates itself, she is able to track it quicker. On the jungle planet, Carter suggests that whatever is transporting them is in the obelisk located in front of the stargate and not the DHD. Ba'al dismisses the idea, partially because it came from a human and partially because it came from a human female. So Carter will try to figure it out himself. Daniel has finished the first stage of the sangraal. And he has telekinetic powers. Mitchell and Vala are worried that Daniel's brain has been rewired the same way O'Neill's was the two times he interacted with the ancient device.

Carter is forced to ask Ba'al for help with the obelisk and he agrees, but not before she punches him for making a snide remark about her intelligence. Daniel is able to finish the second stage of the sangraal before he has to lie down. Something is seriously wrong with him. He talks as if he is Merlin and gets confused. Vala wants him to fight it but Daniel knows he has to let his mind be overwhelmed. Vala and Mitchell argue about Daniel taking a chance with his life and Vala gets to know what is like to really be part of the team, having to watch her teammates risking his life.

Ba'al and Carter have identified the program that is transporting them and Carter thinks they can shut it down. But on the ice planet, Adria has found the location of SG-1 and prepares to go after them. Daniel somehow knows Adria is coming and sends Mitchell and Vala to help the others at the stargate. Ba'al is hit and goes down and the Ori soldiers are closing in. Adria transports into the chamber with Daniel. He is able to take out the rest of the Ori soldiers with some lightning but it drains his energy. Carter starts to dial out and Vala prepares to go check on Daniel. Before she can, Daniel comes hurling out of the mouth of the cave. He is able to get to his feet and fend of Adria's attack, giving the others enough time to escape.

Back on Earth, Vala tries desperately to find a way to get back to the planet and save Daniel. But there are a lot of gate addresses to go through and Daniel may not even be alive. But he is, onboard an Ori battle cruiser, and in a bit of pain. He tells Adria that whatever information Merlin gave him is gone but she does not believe him. They have a lot of work to do.

Review

And thus did the first of the final ten episodes of Stargate: SG-1 come to pass. The dragon was underwhelming, truth be told, both in terms of danger posed and its cruddy computer graphic design. But the dragon was not all that important in the grand scheme of things, not compared to Merlin being found stuck in a wall. Who does that? Morgan La Fey, apparently. Even if she had the best of intentions in mind, sticking somebody in a wall for a thousand years is just not a very nice thing to do.

It was obvious that Merlin would not turn out to be the ultimate solution to the Ori problem, so after we learned the sangraal had been destroyed by Morgan, having Daniel receive all of Merlin's memories was not much of a shock. Nor was his inability to complete the sangraal before Adria showed up to stop him. Actually, nothing was all that surprising about this episode, aside from Daniel's use of lightning to knock out the Ori soldiers.

As always, the episode was filled with that classic SG-1 humor: Vala, Mitchell and Teal'c naming the dragon, Teal'c lamenting the fact that Merlin's passing meant Ba'al could talk again, Daniel's response to discovering he has telekinetic powers. But the humor was not enough to offset the fact that not all that much happened in this episode. Sure, it seemed like a lot happened, what with SG-1 finding Merlin and Daniel getting all his memories. But at the end of the episode, we are back where we started before the first half of "The Quest" back in September of 2006. The Ori are still all-powerful and SG-1 still has no way to combat them. And since Adria has taken an interest in Daniel in the past, his capture by her is not much of a development.

Still, it was an enjoyable episode and it will be interesting to see what Adria will do with Daniel. If he really has lost Merlin's memories -- which I find unlikely -- she is going to be really upset.
