This review contains spoilers for Marvel’s X-Men Noir and Spider-Man Noir through the latest issues (#1), originally published December 4th, 2008 with cover dates of November and December 2008 (copyright notices are for February 2009).

When I first read about Marvel’s new sub-universe (or whatever one wants to call it) “Marvel Noir” I was excited.  I’ve been a fan of crime noir novels for years and the idea of seeing the stories of some of Marvel’s most famous heroes retold in a gritty, 1930s setting sounded right up my alley.  The first issues of X Men Noir and Spider-Man Noir came out early last month (two other miniseries, Daredevil Noir and Wolverine Noir, are apparently in the works, according to this IGN article) and I finally had a chance to sit down and read them a few days ago.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed.
