One Month to Star Trek (2009)
April 8th, 2009
On May 8th, 2009 Star Trek (2009) opens in theaters. That’s only a month away. Judging from what I’ve been reading online a lot of people are looking forward to this new take on the Star Trek franchise. I’m not one of them. Oh, I’ll be seeing it on the big screen. I might even go out of my way to see it opening night. But I’m not excited for it. As has been the case with every Star Trek movie I’ve remained as unspoiled as possible. I’ve seen the pictures and watched the trailers. That’s it.
And frankly, I’m not sure what to think.
Star Trek (2009) Sequel Ordered
March 31st, 2009
More than a month before Star Trek (2009) hits theaters, Paramount Pictures has already ordered a sequel, according to Variety.com. Returning will be producer J.J. Abrams (who also directed Star Trek (2009), writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and co-producers Damon Lindelof (who will help write the sequel) and Bryan Burk. From the Variety.com article:
“There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet,” said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC’s “Lost” who produced the upcoming “Trek” but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman’s screenplay. “But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”
As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.
“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” he said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”
In the unlikely event that the new Star Trek movie is a flop, how embarrassing will it be for Paramount, Abrahams and all involved if the sequel winds up being scrapped?
Watchmen
March 9th, 2009
It’s one thing to hear the media to remind us recently that Time magazine helped enshrine ‘Watchmen’ the graphic novel among the 100 best literary creations of the last century, a mainstream phenomenon from a traditionally niche market. It’s another to realize that, for all the respect, the new film adaptation from Zack Snyder probably exposes what the media probably really thinks, if anything, about it. This review is going to attempt to explain what a shame that is.
The Spirit
January 2nd, 2009
The Spirit (PG-13)
Opened December 25th, 2008
Going into the theater, I knew next to nothing about The Spirit aside from what was shown in the many trailers I saw on television and promotional photographs floating around the Internet. I was aware that it was based on a Will Eisner comic strip (although for some reason I was under the mistaken assumption that it was from the 1930s and set in the Wild West) and that it was directed by Frank Miller (who also directed Sin City, which I enjoyed). In other words, there were no expectations on my part about who the movie would respect the source material and thus no expectations that could be dashed. So when I say The Spirit was a very, very disappointing movie, it has nothing to do with anger on my part as a fan of Eisner’s strip.
Sneak Peek at Star Trek (2009) Scoring Sessions
December 19th, 2008
ScoringSessions.com has come up with a novel way of previewing Michael Giacchino’s scoring sessions for J.J. Abrahms’s anticipated film Star Trek (2009) that doesn’t conflict with the longstanding media blackout — and general sense of mystery — surrounding the film. We won’t ruin the surprise but boy is it unique.

Star Trek (2009) Images Revealed
October 15th, 2008
Across the World Wide Web this evening, six websites have each been given an exclusive image from the highly anticipated Star Trek movie (to be released May 8th, 2009). The six websites are TrekMovie, JoeBlo, MTV Movies Blog, UGO, Ain’t It Cool News and IGN. Among the images are a shot of the bulk of the cast on the bridge, Kirk and McCoy on the bridge, the movie’s bad guy Nero, and a ship under attack (not the Enterprise, however).
Additionally, TrekMovie reports that the first full trailer for Star Trek will most likely debut in front of Quantum of Solace, the new James Bond movie, on November 14th. And, the next issue of Entertainment Weekly will have a cover story on Star Trek (that cover, by the way, looks off somehow — far too airbrushed and overlit, perhaps).
Negative Review of Star Trek (2009) Leads to Nastiness
May 6th, 2009
I’ve never been one to place much stock in reviews, whether they’re for television shows, movies, music or even restaurants. So it doesn’t bother me at all that Star Trek (2009) has been given one of its first negative reviews by Armond White for New York Press. White calls the movie “watchable, yet still terrible cinema” and lambastes it for applying television principles to the big screen. I’ll admit to not entirely understanding what he’s complaining about.
I do, however, completely understand the comments posted at Rotten Tomatoes in response to the review. And they disgust me.
