The Walt Disney Company to Acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc.
August 31st, 2009
Comic Book Resources has the full press release announcing that The Walt Disney Company will acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc. in a stock and cash transaction in which Marvel stockholders will receive $30 cash and 0.745 shares in Disney for each Marvel share they own. Disney President and CEO had this to say about the acquisition:
“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories. Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”
What does this mean creatively? Hopefully, not a thing. And although both Marvel and Disney have approved the transaction, there are still some hurdles to clear before Disney can officially purchase Marvel.
Summer Glau to Recur on Dollhouse Season Two
August 27th, 2009
the live feed is reporting that actress Summer Glau will have a recurring role on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, which returns for its second season this fall on FOX (more specifically, the season premiere will be on Friday, September 25th, 2009 at 9:00PM). Recall that Glau previously appeared in Whedon’s Firefly as well as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She also had a recurring role on The 4400.
I’m personally a big fan of Summer Glau but even she can’t make me want to watch Dollhouse again.
Syfy Renews Warehouse 13
August 20th, 2009
Variety is reporting that Syfy has ordered a 13-episode second season of its new hit drama Warehouse 13. And I do mean hit. According to the article, it is the “most-watched show in Syfy’s 17-year history,” with an average 3.7 million viewers per episode (1.4 million of which are in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic). Furthermore, those viewers are almost evenly split between men and women, which is apparently very unusual for Syfy. And finally, so far Warehouse 13 is outperforming the first season of Battlestar Galactica, which for some silly reason makes me a little giddy.
For some reason, however, Syfy decided not to go with a 20-episode season and opted instead for just another 13 episodes. I actually prefer 13 episode seasons because it is harder to split 13 in half, meaning no lengthy hiatus. Four episodes remain to be aired from this first season (the two-hour premiere counts as two). Season Two will likely air sometime during the summer of 2010.
Two New Heroes Promos
August 17th, 2009
NBC has posted two new short promotional clips for the new season of Heroes:
The first is actually a pretty decent promotional spot with short clips from the upcoming season and a voice over. The second, though, is a laughable scene in which Peter duels at supersonic speeds with some unknown baddie using swords of some sort. Anyway, Season Four kicks off on Monday, September 21st at 8:00PM with a special two-hour “event” consisting of the first two episodes back-to-back.
Bryan Singer to Bring Battlestar Galactica to the Big Screen
August 13th, 2009
According to Variety.com, Bryan Singer has teamed with Universal Pictures to produce and direct a feature film version of the 1979 ABC television series Battlestar Galactica. The franchise was previously given a new twist by Ronald D. Moore for Syfy (previously the SCI FI Channel) and ran from 2005 to 2009. The Variety.com article states that Singer’s version will be “a complete reimagination,” suggesting that it, too, will bear little resemblance to the original television series and its lasers, capes and daggits. EW.com confirms that the movie “will be a complete re-imagining of the sci-fi lore that was invented by Larson back in the 70s.”
Whether Moore will be involved with the new movie is unknown. Is the world ready for yet another incarnation of Battlestar Galactica? Will fans of the original series who detested the Syfy channel version boycott Singer’s movie as well? Will the fact that Glen Larson, creator of the original series, is involved as a producer do anything to change their minds? Will Dirk Benedict (the original Starbuck) and Katee Sackhoff (the Syfy Starbuck) have cameos in the new movie alongside the movie Starbuck in an awesome coming together of Starbucks past, present and future?
Only time will tell.
Heroes Season Four Trailer
August 10th, 2009
I’m not quite sure exactly when this became available but this is the first time I’m seeing it. NBC has released a trailer for the fourth season and fifth chapter of Heroes, which is titled “Redemption.” As far as I know NBC hasn’t specified whether “Redemption” will span the entire season or just the first half. On the other hand, it appears Season Four will only run 19 episodes rather than 23 or 25, so perhaps a sole chapter would work best.
As always, the following video likely won’t be available to those outside the United States.
My reactions? Prison Break’s Robert Knepper will make a fantastic villain (if his character is a villain). Claire in college, though? I’m not looking forward to that. How much more whining about wanting to be a normal girl can viewers stand? As for the idea of a merry band of carnival workers who all have abilities, I suppose that could be interesting. Unfortunately, it looks like one of them — the one woman who “grows” tattoos on her body — can tell the past and/or the future.
That’s one of the biggest complaints I’ve had about Heroes. Characters being able to see the future only leads to muddled time lines. And just how many characters have we seen with some sort of prognostication ability? I’m also not sure there’s anyway a storyline involving Sylar revealing himself inside Nathan can be anything but dull. I’ve said it time and time again: Sylar needs to go.
Season Four premieres on Monday, September 21st with a special two-hour episode running from 8:00-10:00PM Eastern.
ABC’s V to Arrive November 3rd
August 9th, 2009
the futon critic reports that ABC’s new version of V will debut on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 8:00PM. Earlier, it appeared the show was destined for midseason. The series stars, among others, Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Stargate: SG-1, Joel Gretsch (The 4400) and Laura Vandervoort (Smallville). Here’s the official ABC fall preview clip:
