On Tuesday, CBS announced it had canceled Ghost Whisperer after five seasons, along with Cold Case, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Gary Unmarried, NUMB3RS, Miami Medical and Accidentally on Purpose. While some of the cancellations, especially NUMB3RS, were expected, the cancellation of Ghost Whisperer was surprising.

Deadline Hollywood reports that talks between production company ABC Studios and ABC the network to pick up Ghost Whisperer are underway and things are looking good.Last season, CBS picked up Medium after NBC canceled it while ABC picked up Scrubs after NBC canceled it as well.

What do you think? Should ABC pick up Ghost Whisperer for a sixth season? The fifth season finale airs tomorrow and it seems highly unlikely that any lingering storylines will be wrapped up.

It’s that time again. The networks are canceling shows left and right while at the same time announcing new shows for the 2010-2011 season. The word going around at the moment is that NBC has canceled Heroes after four seasons but might air some sort of wrap-up for the once-popular show. Deadline.com reports that the network will announce what form the wrap-up will take after its upfront presentation this Monday, but it could be “a 2-hour or 4-hour special event in midseason.” The Live Feed has a similar story, but suggests that “tabling that verdict until after upfronts” can’t be “the best sign.”

Other rumors include ABC canceling Flash Forward after its first season but renewing V for a second year. Also, NBC has officially renewed Chuck for a fourth season. The CW previously announced that it was renewing Supernatural and The Vampire Dairies as well as Smallville. FOX announced earlier that Fringe would be returning for a third season.

CBS has yet to decide whether to renew Medium or Ghost Whisperer.

The staff at Lower Decks would like to offer our thoughts and prayers to the Koenig family as they deal with this tragedy.

Comic Book Resources has the full press release announcing that The Walt Disney Company will acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc. in a stock and cash transaction in which Marvel stockholders will receive $30 cash and 0.745 shares in Disney for each Marvel share they own. Disney President and CEO had this to say about the acquisition:

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories. Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”

What does this mean creatively? Hopefully, not a thing. And although both Marvel and Disney have approved the transaction, there are still some hurdles to clear before Disney can officially purchase Marvel.

And I do mean hit. According to the article, it is the “most-watched show in Syfy’s 17-year history,” with an average 3.7 million viewers per episode (1.4 million of which are in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic). Furthermore, those viewers are almost evenly split between men and women, which is apparently very unusual for Syfy. And finally, so far Warehouse 13 is outperforming the first season of Battlestar Galactica, which for some silly reason makes me a little giddy.

For some reason, however, Syfy decided not to go with a 20-episode season and opted instead for just another 13 episodes. I actually prefer 13 episode seasons because it is harder to split 13 in half, meaning no lengthy hiatus. Four episodes remain to be aired from this first season (the two-hour premiere counts as two). Season Two will likely air sometime during the summer of 2010.

According to Variety.com, Bryan Singer has teamed with Universal Pictures to produce and direct a feature film version of the 1979 ABC television series Battlestar Galactica. The franchise was previously given a new twist by Ronald D. Moore for Syfy (previously the SCI FI Channel) and ran from 2005 to 2009. The Variety.com article states that Singer’s version will be “a complete reimagination,” suggesting that it, too, will bear little resemblance to the original television series and its lasers, capes and daggits. EW.com confirms that the movie “will be a complete re-imagining of the sci-fi lore that was invented by Larson back in the 70s.”

Whether Moore will be involved with the new movie is unknown. Is the world ready for yet another incarnation of Battlestar Galactica? Will fans of the original series who detested the Syfy channel version boycott Singer’s movie as well? Will the fact that Glen Larson, creator of the original series, is involved as a producer do anything to change their minds? Will Dirk Benedict (the original Starbuck) and Katee Sackhoff (the Syfy Starbuck) have cameos in the new movie alongside the movie Starbuck in an awesome coming together of Starbucks past, present and future?

Only time will tell.

I’m not quite sure exactly when this became available but this is the first time I’m seeing it. NBC has released a trailer for the fourth season and fifth chapter of Heroes, which is titled “Redemption.” As far as I know NBC hasn’t specified whether “Redemption” will span the entire season or just the first half. On the other hand, it appears Season Four will only run 19 episodes rather than 23 or 25, so perhaps a sole chapter would work best.

As always, the following video likely won’t be available to those outside the United States.

My reactions? Prison Break‘s Robert Knepper will make a fantastic villain (if his character is a villain). Claire in college, though? I’m not looking forward to that. How much more whining about wanting to be a normal girl can viewers stand? As for the idea of a merry band of carnival workers who all have abilities, I suppose that could be interesting. Unfortunately, it looks like one of them — the one woman who “grows” tattoos on her body — can tell the past and/or the future.

That’s one of the biggest complaints I’ve had about Heroes. Characters being able to see the future only leads to muddled time lines. And just how many characters have we seen with some sort of prognostication ability? I’m also not sure there’s anyway a storyline involving Sylar revealing himself inside Nathan can be anything but dull. I’ve said it time and time again: Sylar needs to go.

Season Four premieres on Monday, September 21st with a special two-hour episode running from 8:00-10:00PM Eastern.
