Nominations for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards were released today (see the complete list at the futon critic) and among the shows up for a statue is Legend of the Seeker. I actually grew into a relatively big fan of the series over the course of its first season. The category is Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score) and the episode nominated is the series premiere, “Prophecy,” for music by Joe LoDuca. I don’t often notice music in television shows so I can’t comment on the quality (I’m still disappointed the show doesn’t have proper opening credits with a theme song). But I’m sure Mr. LoDuca is thrilled to be nominated. He’s competing with five other shows: 24 and The Simpsons on FOX, Ghost Whisperer on CBS, Castle on ABC and The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency on HBO.

If you don’t want to know anything about the rumored change coming to Ghost Whisperer during the 2009-2010 season (its fifth) don’t keep reading. I’m sure, however, that if this change does come to pass it will be difficult for fans to keep spoiler-free. Indeed, it may very well be shouted from the rooftops, so to speak, in promotional spots for the new season.

Ghost Whisperer
“The Book of Changes”
Originally Broadcast Friday, May 15th, 2009

I apologize for the lateness of this review. It has nothing to do with how I felt about the episode; I just didn’t get around to writing it. Anyway, this was the fourth season finale of Ghost Whisperer. And it was a pretty good finale. I don’t think it’s fair to judge this one episode on the basis of the season as a whole. Maybe in a few weeks I’ll write about what worked and what didn’t during this past season. Right now, though, I’m going to discuss “The Book of Changes.”

CBS has revealed its schedule for the 2009-2010 television season. What does it mean for you, the sci-fi/fantasy fan? Almost nothing. Ghost Whisperer was the crime procedural network’s only relevant show and it remains on the schedule, airing Fridays at 8:00 p.m. What may be news is that CBS is adding the cancelled (and Ghost Whisperer-compatible) NBC series, Medium, to its lineup. Medium will run on Fridays at 9:00 p.m., sandwiched between Ghost Whisperer and the returning Numb3rs.

Ghost Whisperer
“Endless Love”
Originally Broadcast Friday, May 8th, 2009

This was a very strange episode. Not in a good way, unfortunately. Ignoring the fact that it was just another Ghost of the Week story, with practically no mention of Jim’s death and resurrection as Sam, it wasn’t a very good episode. I didn’t find the Ghost of the Week interesting at all. It is always nice to see Gail O’Grady on television, but that wasn’t enough to help save this episode.

According to Variety, CBS has officially renewed Ghost Whisperer for the 2009-2010 season, its fifth. Earlier there was speculation that the drama might move to ABC due to financial issues.

Despite bucking the current trend in network television and enjoying a surge in the Nielsen ratings this season, supernatural drama series Ghost Whisperer receives relatively little media coverage. In late March, Variety published an article discussing the show’s impressive increases in both total viewers and several key demographics. Now, as it nears the end of its fourth season, TV Week reports that there is a remote chance that Ghost Whisperer may wind up on ABC next season.

Ghost Whisperer
“Cursed”
Originally Broadcast Friday, May 1st, 2009

What a vexing episode this was. Putting aside for a moment my continued frustration at the way the Jim/Sam story line has been playing out of late, “Cursed” included some strange elements that seemed out of place on Ghost Whisperer and took an uninspired turn near the end. For the first third of the episode I was sure it would join “Save Our Souls” as one of my favorite episodes of the season. But now I’m not quite sure.

Ghost Whisperer
“Stage Fright”
Originally Broadcast Friday, April 24th, 2009

Unlike the last new episode (“Thrilled to Death,” shown two weeks ago) the Ghost of the Week storyline in “Stage Fright” was actually very interesting. There still wasn’t much going on with Melinda and Jim, though, and that’s frustrating. This was a show-within-a-show episode, involving a fake soap opera (or daytime serial) called “Hope’s Edge” that both Delia and Jim are fans of, and included an amusing in-joke for viewers of Ghost Whisperer.

Ghost Whisperer
“Thrilled to Death”
Originally Broadcast Friday, April 10th, 2009

Ghost Whisperer returns after a month-long hiatus and this is the episode we get? A disappointing Ghost of the Week with special guest star Hillary Duff and almost nothing to do with the newly reborn relationship between Melinda and Jim? To make matters worse, this week’s episode (April 17th) is another repeat! In a way, with the season’s lengthy, shocking storyline more or less wrapped up, things are back to normal. This was a decidedly normal episode.
