Ghost Whisperer – 4×19 – “Thrilled to Death”
April 13th, 2009
Ghost Whisperer
“Thrilled to Death”
Originally Broadcast Friday, April 10th, 2009
Ghost Whisperer returns after a month-long hiatus and this is the episode we get? A disappointing Ghost of the Week with special guest star Hillary Duff and almost nothing to do with the newly reborn relationship between Melinda and Jim? To make matters worse, this week’s episode (April 17th) is another repeat! In a way, with the season’s lengthy, shocking storyline more or less wrapped up, things are back to normal. This was a decidedly normal episode.

“Leap of Faith”
Originally Broadcast Friday, March 13th, 2009
Should the fact that this episode, one of the most important in the history of Ghost Whisperer, was first aired on Friday the 13th be seen as anything more than a coincidence? No, probably not. Interesting quirks of timing aside, “Leap of Faith” appears on the surface to be the conclusion of the Jim/Sam storyline that began at the end of “Imaginary Friends & Enemies” (originally broadcast November 7th, 2008). But is it?

“Delusions of Grandview”
Originally Broadcast Friday, March 6th, 2009
During last week’s episode (“Ghost Busted”) Jim/Sam learned that truth about Melinda. He took it better than expected, asking only for a little time to let it sink in. As the episode ended it looked like Melinda and Jim/Sam had taken a big step forward in their relationship. By the end of “Delusions of Grandview,” however, they had taken a huge step backward, if not entirely given up on the relationship. For viewers who have been waiting for months to see how this season’s big storyline played itself out, this was a key episode. But it was also a solid episode in the Ghost of the Week department and I hope that isn’t overlooked.

When Professor Eli James was first introduced in “Firestarter” (the first episode of this season, originally broadcast October 3rd) I wasn’t impressed. All I knew about Jamie Kennedy was that he had starred in a hidden camera reality series called The Jamie Kennedy Experiment for a few years on The WB. During the first few episodes of the season the either the writers weren’t comfortable with the character or Jamie Kennedy wasn’t.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×15 – “Greek Tragedy”

After last week’s episode finally brought Melinda and Jim/Sam together, “Greek Tragedy” appeared to push them apart. As romantically frustrating as that may be, with at least seven episodes left in the season it was premature to assume that everything would work out perfectly. As for the Ghost of the Week, I liked it. And unlike last week’s episode I didn’t see the ending coming until Melinda did.

This was a solid episode, one that I very much enjoyed despite figuring out how it was going to end after about twenty minutes. The Ghost of the Week was played by Gretchen Egolf. You might remember her from NBC’s Journeyman; she played Katie Vassar, the wife of Dan Vasser (played by Kevin McKidd), a man who suddenly finds himself traveling back in time. Ah, that was a great show. I still miss it.

I’m conflicted about how I feel about this episode. Judging from the few promos I saw for it (as a general rule I try not to watch promos but sometimes a few slip through), “Body of Water” was supposed to be a very big episode, one that answered a lot of questions. I suppose in a way it did answer a few questions, although it also raised quite a few of its own, but I just don’t feel it was an exceptional episode of Ghost Whisperer.

After what seemed like forever, there was finally some forward momentum in the ongoing storyline that has seen Jim/Sam attempting to reconnect with his fiancee. At the end of last week’s episode, Jim/Sam had decided to go see Nikki, his fiancee, and drove off. At the start of this episode, Melinda is able to convince Jim/Sam to let her join him on a “road trip” that will allow him to see Nikki and her to pick up a garage full of antiques.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×11 – “Life on the Line”

The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Life on the Line,” originally broadcast January 9th, 2009.
Unlike many network shows, Ghost Whisperer didn’t take a very long winter hiatus. In fact, it was only off the air for two weeks (the last new episode aired on December 19th, 2008) and should be airing new episodes for at least the next few months give or take a week. Still, “Life on the Line” started with a short but relatively thorough recap of the huge changes that have taken place during Season Four of Ghost Whisper. Namely, Jim being shot, Jim dying and Jim’s ghost entering the body of Sam.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×10 – “Ball and Chain”
December 22nd, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Ball and Chain,” originally broadcast December 19th, 2008.
After taking a week off, Ghost Whisperer returns with a superb episode. And not just because I’m a fan of Rena Sofer (the actress who played the Ghost of the Week in this episode) or because I felt the last new episode, “Pieces of You,” was disappointing. No, “Ball and Chain” was just an excellent episode. Unlike “Pieces of You,” Jim/Sam had only a minor role in this episode, appearing in only three scenes. Although I don’t abhor this latest twist Ghost Whisperer has taken, I think “Ball and Chain” was a stronger episode because it only touched upon the Jim/Sam storyline.
