Ghost Whisperer – 4×09 – “Pieces of You”
December 8th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Pieces of You,” originally broadcast December 5th, 2008.
After taking a week off, Ghost Whisperer returned with an episode I found mediocre. “Pieces of You” was the first standalone episode following the trio of episodes (“Imaginary Friends & Enemies,” “Threshold” and “Heart & Soul,” broadcast November 7th through November 21st, 2008) that drastically altered the framework of the series. Unfortunately, “Pieces of You” fell flat compared to those (surprisingly) strong episodes.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×08 – “Heart & Soul”

I was quite pleasantly surprised by this episode. Going in, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect, although I admit to being concerned with the way certain things would be depicted, but “Heart & Soul” did a fine job following up on the “game changing” events of the past two episodes while laying the groundwork for what I imagine will be the remainder of the season. In many ways, Ghost Whisperer has been rejuvenated. But it remains to be seen how well the current state of affairs will remain interesting. Will we see a return to the status quo sooner rather than later?
Ghost Whisperer – 4×07 – “Threshold “

After the shocking events in last week’s episode I was expecting more from “Threshold.” There was much to be disappointed with, in my opinion, along with some nice moments as well. We now know what the producers of Ghost Whisperer have in mind for the rest of the season (and potentially the series) after last week’s shocking turn of events.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×06 – “Imaginary Friends & Enemies”

What a creepy (and game changing) episode. The young actress playing Natalie really did a great job. At first, I was confused as to how Jim knew Tricia and Hunter, because I couldn’t remember seeing either of them before. I thought maybe Tricia was his sister but eventually it seemed obvious she’s just an old friend (or the widow of an old friend, as the case may be). From the very start there was tension evident between Hunter and Natalie and I assumed that was going to play into the Ghost of the Week. But really, it didn’t. This wasn’t about Hunter and Natalie or even Natalie. It was all about Tricia.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×05 – “Bloodline”

This was an interesting episode, with a rather low-key ghost of the week story that evolved into something a little more emotional and compelling. I’ve never been one to toot my own horn but I did call the big twist within the first five or six minutes. Granted, I became a little less certain as the episode progressed but ultimately I was redeemed.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×04 – “Save Our Souls”
October 26th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Save Our Souls,” originally broadcast October 24th, 2008.
Although I realize we are only four episodes in, at the moment “Save Our Souls” is my favorite episode of Season Four. Everything came together to make a fantastic episode. If not for the one short scene with Eli, it may have been a perfect episode. For once, Melinda and Jim were on equal footing, in terms of both the number of scenes they were in and the amount of fact-finding they did. And to think, from the episode previews I thought it would be Speed 2: Cruise Control meets, well, Ghost Whisperer. But it was a little more than that.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×03 – “Ghost in the Machine”
October 20th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Ghost in the Machine,” originally broadcast October 17th, 2008.
“Ghost in the Machine” was an unusual episode of Ghost Whisperer. Due to the regular subject matter of the series, this really says something about the storyline of the episode. Unusual doesn’t always mean bad and in this case it actually means quite good.
As the episode opens, Eli is discussing ghosts with Melinda. Soon, however, Melinda has someone coming to fix her computer. That someone is none other than Ned, Delia’s son. Eli is introduced to Ned and the two bond over a common interest in Alt World 2. They have to explain the concept of a massive, interactive computer game/life simulation to Melinda. Ned creates an avatar (a computer representation) for Melinda, who notices one avatar dressed like a stereotypical nerd.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×02 – “Big Chills”
October 11th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Ghost Whisperer through the current episode, “Big Chills,” originally broadcast October 10th, 2008.
Like the season premiere, “Big Chills” was an episode on a mission. It had to develop the character of Eli James, introduced in “Firestarter,” while following up on the ominous warning Melinda was given, the one about death brushing off on something (or someone) she touches. Plus, there had to be the requisite ghost-of-the-week. In all three categories “Big Chills” succeeded.
Ghost Whisperer – 4×01 – “Firestarter”

When Ghost Whisperer was first announced, I had no intention whatsoever of watching it. I was a big fan of Joan of Arcadia and Ghost Whisperer was its replacement when CBS canned it following the 2004-2005 season. Joan of Arcadia, you will recall, was about a girl who spoke to God. And Ghost Whisperer is about a woman who talks to ghosts. At the time, it seemed to me that CBS was making a huge mistake by getting rid of Joan of Arcadia (which, admittedly, went downhill during its second season) only to replace it with a new drama that was a new take on the same theme.
