TVGuide.com is reporting that NBC will only order 18 to 20 episodes of Heroes during the 2009-2010 season (its fourth).  According to the article: “The show’s writers have already started planning for the show’s fifth volume, which will involve a series of mysterious deaths. Or could they be murders?”

Heroes
“I Am Sylar”
Originally Broadcast April 20th, 2009

With only one episode left before Season Three of Heroes draws to a close I’m ready to call it: this wasn’t the tour de force, return to grace that the producers, the network and (especially) the fans had hoped for. Maybe Season One was just a fluke, a perfect storm of characters, actors, writing and special effects. Season Two, cut short by the Writers Strike, was a disappointment and frankly I was sure Season Three would be a vast improvement.

I wasn’t wrong but I wasn’t totally right.

Heroes
“1961″
Originally Broadcast Monday, April 13th, 2009

With only three episodes left in the season this is how Heroes chooses to use one of them? With a boring episode about family anguish and the horrible events of the past? I have to say, I was disappointed. “1961″ wasn’t much of an episode. There was a lot of talking and a lot of wind and not much else. On the plus side Sylar didn’t make an appearance.

Heroes
“Turn and Face the Strange”
Originally Broadcast Monday, April 6th, 2009

Although I’m not confident that Heroes has truly turned a corner, these past three episodes (starting with “Cold Snap”) have seen a marked improvement in quality. I’m really enjoying Heroes again and at the end of each episode I find myself eagerly awaiting what comes next. There are still plenty of things about the show I don’t like and plenty of things that could improve. But overall, I’m quite impressed with the way things are going and that gives me some hope for Season Four should it come to pass.

Heroes
“Into Asylum”
Originally Broadcast Monday, March 30th, 2009

Hot on the heels of “Cold Snap,” which I called the best episode of the season, comes another solid episode of Heroes. “Into Asylum” wasn’t quite as good as “Cold Snap” but it kept my attention from beginning to end and left me wanting more. I’m not at all sure why it was called “Into Asylum” — if I were to give it a name I would have gone with “Duos” or “Partners” or “Compadres” — but that’s not something I’ll hold against it.

Heroes
“Cold Snap”
Originally Broadcast Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Taking a week off seems to have done Heroes a whole lot of good. “Cold Snap” was an excellent episode, easily the best of the season, and that’s with a pretty big Hiro storyline. Unfortunately, it looks like it was also the lowest-rated episode of the series to date, with fewer than 6.5 million viewers tuning in. Can word of this episode’s high quality lure viewers back to Heroes? Perhaps. A lot is riding on the last five episodes of the season; the Season Three finale airs April 27th.

Heroes
“Shades of Gray”
Originally Broadcast Monday, March 9th, 2009

All things considered this wasn’t a terrible episode. Could Heroes finally be back on the right track? More importantly, will the Nielsen ratings ever stop dropping? “Shades of Gray” sunk to an all-time low in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic and, for the first time ever, had fewer than seven million viewers. The third season premiere (“The Second Coming” and “The Butterfly Effect”) drew ten million.

So over the course of the past six months, three million fans who stuck by Heroes during its second season have disappeared. My point is, should Heroes finally find its footing again, will there be anyone left to care?

Ten Ways to Fix Heroes

March 5th, 2009

With the recent news that NBC seems intent on bringing Heroes back for a fourth season it seems like the perfect time to suggest a few ways to fix what has become a very broken series.  Over at the Observation Lounge we have a round table going on how to fix Heroes.  I selfishly suggested that the first step should be reviving Elle, allowing Kristen Bell to return.

Here are ten serious suggestions.

According to James Hibbard’s The Live Feed, NBC’s Heroes, which has been struggling in the Nielsen ratings this season, will return for the 2009-2010 season with 18 to 20 episodes. The news comes straight from NBC’s entertainment president Angela Bromstad, but Hibbard points out that there is still a chance, however slim, that NBC may change its mind.

Heroes
“Exposed”
Originally Broadcast Monday, March 2nd, 2009

It’s Tuesday again and that means yesterday was Monday. That means there was a new episode of Heroes on last night. And that means it’s time again for me to sit down and try to find something positive to say about that new episode. Perhaps the best thing about “Exposed” was its lack of Hiro. I never thought I’d say that. Hiro used to be a wonderful character. Not anymore. In fact, that’s what I’d say about Heroes. It used to be wonderful. Not anymore.
