Legend of the Seeker – 1×14 – “Hartland”

Originally Broadcast the Weekend of Saturday, March 7th, 2009
Since returning from hiatus three weeks ago, Legend of the Seeker has delivered a pointless clip show (“Home,” originally broadcast February 21st) and a disappointing ghost story (“Revenant,” originally broadcast February 28th). “Hartland,” however, offered one of the show’s strongest episodes to date, bringing together several characters from previous episodes and setting the stage for the rest of the season.
Oh, and Zedd wasn’t in the episode. That helped.

I feel quite badly about not recognizing Michael Hurst in this episode as the wizard Amfortas. I was a fan of both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, in which Hurst co-starred as Iolaus and its spin-off, Xena: Warrior Princess. I’m going to say it was the long hair that threw me. Of course now that I know Hurst was in the episode I can’t believe I didn’t notice. If I had, it might have made an otherwise color-by-numbers episode a little better.
Legend of the Seeker – 1×12 – “Home”
February 22nd, 2009
The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Home” originally broadcast the weekend of February 21st, 2009.
The first new episode of Legend of the Seeker in several weeks wasn’t much of an episode. It was, like Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s much maligned “Shades of Gray,” a clip show. There’s never a real need for a clip show but to show one halfway through a show’s first season? That’s unnecessary. And to make it the first episode after a three week hiatus? That’s just cruel. The framing device used to introduce the clips was weak but at least it was connected to one of the continuing plot lines of the series.
Legend of the Seeker – 1×11 – “Confession”
February 1st, 2009
The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Confession” originally broadcast the weekend of January 31st, 2009.
This was an interesting episode, one that explored a darker aspect of Confessors (in this case Kahlan), but it ultimately fell flat due to a fairly obvious plot and the introduction of Zedd’s brother. If one Zorander is annoying, imagine how annoying two Zoranders can be. All that yelling. On the plus side, there weren’t any precocious children in this episode.
Legend of the Seeker – 1×10 – “Sacrifice”
January 26th, 2009
The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Sacrifice” originally broadcast the weekend of January 24th, 2009.
The news that Legend of the Seeker has been renewed for a second season didn’t exactly surprise me. I wouldn’t have been surprised had it been cancelled either, though. The good news is that after two terrible episodes back-to-back, this past weekend’s episode was actually quite good. “Sacrifice” saw the return of the Mord’Sith (first seen in “Deena”), although technically it wasn’t a real Mord’Sith at all. Read on to learn more.
Legend of the Seeker Renewed for Second Season
January 26th, 2009
Syndicated action-adventure series Legend of the Seeker has been renewed for a second season, according to TV Week. So far, only Tribune Broadcasting’s television stations have cleared the series for the 2009-2010 season but more stations will add the series before long. From the article:
“‘Legend of the Seeker,’ the No. 1 new first-run syndicated show of the 2008-09 season, has proven to be a great fit for our Tribune launch group,” Janice Marinelli, president of Disney-ABC Domestic Television, said in a statement.
“We’re enormously pleased with their confidence in this exciting new scripted hour and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership with them into ‘Seeker’s’ second season,” she said.
“We are thrilled with Disney’s commitment to this production,” Sean Compton, senior vice president of programming at Tribune Broadcasting, said in a statement.

Legend of the Seeker – 1×09 – “Puppeteer”
January 21st, 2009
The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Puppeteer” originally broadcast the weekend of January 17th, 2009.
In my review of last week’s episode I wrote that it had replaced “The Listener” as my least-favorite episode of Legend of the Seeker thus far. No longer. “Puppeteer” now easily tops the list. It was brutal to watch, mostly because it focused heavily on Zedd, a character who is little more than an old guy who yells a lot. Even an appearance by Darken Rahl (his first since the two-part pilot?) couldn’t save this episode. Not only was Zedd front and center for most of the episode, it included not one but two annoying children: a princess and her playmate.
Legend of the Seeker – 1×08 – “Denna”
January 15th, 2009
The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Denna,” originally broadcast the weekend of January 10th, 2009.
After four weeks of repeats, Legend of the Seeker returned this past weekend with a new episode that may top “Listener” as my least favorite episode of the series to date. I don’t really have the will or desire to write a full review of “Denna,” which I think can be summed up in a single sentence:
The Seeker is abused by an evil dominatrix and Kahlan is forced to confront her feelings for Richard.
No, I can do better than that.
Legend of the Seeker Review to Be Late
January 10th, 2009
My review of this weekend’s Legend of the Seeker episode (“Denna”) is going to be a bit late. I hope to have it completed by Thursday.
Legend of the Seeker – 1×07 – “Identity”
December 9th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Legend of the Seeker through the current episode, “Identity,” originally broadcast the weekend of December 6th, 2008.
This was the last new episode of Legend of the Seeker until January 10th, 2009 and unfortunately the series went out on a low note. “Identity” was a disappointing, cliche-ridden episode that did little to further the plot of the series or the individual stories of any of the characters. It seems as if every action-adventure show has to have an episode like this in which the main character’s body is switched with someone else. None of his close friends notice and he is trapped in the other body in some sort of terrible situation.
