LOST Season 6 Preview

February 2nd, 2010

LOST premieres tonight on ABC, and it will launch a final season will be very bittersweet for me.  Sweet because I’m looking forward to seeing the finality of the writers’ masterpiece; bitter because it will finally be over and there won’t be any more LOST to look forward to.  But, like it or not, the show’s end begins tonight, and let’s take a spoiler-free (but speculation-full) look at what to expect.

ABC’s 2009-2010 television schedule has been announced. Lost returns in 2010 for its final season. New shows of possible interest include Eastwick, Flash Forward and V. Eastwick is another attempt to turn “The Witches of Eastwick” into a television series, where “three very different women find themselves drawn together by a mysterious man who unleashes unique powers in each of them.” If at first you don’t succeed, right? Eastwick airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m.

In Flash Forward, everyone on the planet, regardless of age, briefly blacks out and sees a glimpse of his/her future. How people deal with that knowledge, and whether they can change what they’ve seen is the focus of the show. While it sounds like a compatible match for Lost, Flash Forward is scheduled for Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m.

In another case of “haven’t we done this before,” ABC is rebooting the 1983 mini-seris (and subsequent television series), V, “about the world’s first encounter with an alien race in which the aliens call themselves The Visitors, and have a seemingly friendly agenda that may or may not be a cover for something more malevolent.” V doesn’t appear on the released fall schedule, meaning it’s destined to be a mid-season replacement.

Shows which didn’t survive the cut include Life on Mars and Pushing Daisies.

LOST‘s producers referred to the season five finale as a “game changer.”  That, heading into the final season of the show, things wouldn’t ever be the same.  And I can safely say that, after watching the finale, they were right.  Because the events of “The Incident” have changed the game, and I don’t think LOST will ever be the same again.

The fifth season of ABC’s Lost comes to a close on the East Coast in just a few minutes. It’s been an incredible two hours. Lots of revelations, lots of flashbacks, lots of drama and lots of questions left unanswered. Hit the comments with your reactions but be wary of spoilers.

“Follow the Leader”
Originally Broadcast Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

In the final pre-finale episode of the season, LOST moves us toward what should be a very powerful finale.  More than any other year, the main characters are separated (both by time and space) going into the finale.  But, with this episode, they’re able to tie together everyone with one unique and amazing character: Richard Alpert.

LOST
“The Variable”
Originally Broadcast Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

In the 100th episode of LOST, we didn’t get the usual explosive antics usually associated with a show’s centennial episode.  Instead, we finally get around to exploring one of the more intriguing characters on this show: Daniel Faraday.  In only 20 episodes on the show, Daniel has found a way to make a big impact.  And in this one, he might have firmly entrenched himself in the show’s mythos.

LOST
“Some Like It Hoth”
Originally Broadcast Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Miles Straume came onto the LOST scene 30 episodes ago, but he’s never really been given the spotlight.  The producers have teased us with his “ghost whisperer” ability, but they’ve never really taken the time to explain it to us.  But, finally, almost two full seasons later, Miles finally gets his own stage in an episode that seems to set us up for the final charge of the year.

LOST
“Dead Is Dead”
Originally Broadcast Wednesday, April 7th, 2009

With all of the activity in the 1970s Dharma storyline, I almost forgot that there was a lot going on in the aftermath of Ajira 316.  And this episode gives us an hour-long look at the present-day activities, reminding us that LOST has great arcs going on in both eras.  In the lead are two of the show’s strongest characters: John Locke and Ben Linus.

LOST
“Whatever Happened, Happened”
Originally Broadcast Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

LOST is on such a streak of great episodes that I’m not sure they have to try anymore.  Everything seems to flow perfectly from one episode to another, and all of the material seems to be right in front of them.  And the LOST universe is so rich and vivid now that all it takes is a guest appearance here and a plot twist there, and they have an automatic winner.

LOST
“He’s Our You”
Originally Broadcast Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I can still remember the first time that I saw Ben Linus in a preview for season two’s “One of Them”  It was probably the idea that we finally had a face to the Others that fascinated me because I never thought that he’d be such a major character in the mythos of the series.  Several years later, we get “He’s Our You” – an episode that might be Ben’s biggest to date.
