I read about this episode a while back, and there seemed to be a lot of internet backlash about the idea of having Jor-El physically appear on an episode of Smallville.  Much like the appearance of Zod as a regular this season, people weren’t really sure how it would work.  In reality, this episode really works, and it actually sells the idea that Jor-El and Zod belong on this show.  Add a huge serving of continuity, and “Kandor” is probably the best episode of the season so far.

With a title like “Crossfire” and the introduction of Green Arrow’s sidekick, Speedy, you’d think that the entire episode would be devoted to that.  Instead, the writers decide to cram that story in with a story about Tess vs. Zod and Chloe meeting her hacking equal.  Oh yeah…and the first-ever kiss between Lois and Clark, wrapped in a cheesy morning show storyline.  And in the end, it all just kind of comes out weak and jumbled.

The Oliver Queen Show moves on in “Roulette” – putting Oliver through a “game” to save himself and protect his fortune.  It’s a bit cliche, and there’s not a whole lot to 95% of the episode.  But in the hour’s final arc, the show finally shows some progress, some risky moves by key characters, and hopefully a return to normal for Mr. Queen.

Smallville 9×4 – “Echo”

October 20th, 2009

For the second straight week, I’m going to ask that you ignore a part of the plot of a Smallville episode because you will have to look passed it to see the good parts.  This week, instead of zombies, it will be Clark’s temporary power to read people’s thoughts.  It isn’t a Superman power, and you’re never going to hear from it again.  So put it out of your own mind, don’t worry about it, and try to focus on the rest of the episode.  Which, actually, isn’t that bad.

I was really dreading this episode, to be honest.  Usually, at least once in a season, Smallville decides to do an episode based on some kind of cliche.  We’ve seen witches and vampires, and now it’s time for zombies.  And knowing how their previous attempts at the horror genre have gone, I was expecting to hate this one.  After watching it, I was actually pleasantly surprised.

You can tell that the writers of Smallville really want this to be a story about Superman.  Tom Welling is still here, but they want to highlight the differences between their show and the one that was on the WB nine years ago.  Clark is living in Metropolis, is in love with Lois Lane, works at the Daily Planet, and is saving people on a city-wide scale.  But while the show has certainly updated itself, it is still plagued by the same problems it’s had since season one.

Smallville 9×1 – “Savior”

September 28th, 2009

“Savior” represents the start of the ninth season of Smallville.  It’s hard to believe that the show has been on that long, but one look at the opening credits will show that, indeed, a lot of time has passed.  Tom Welling (Clark) and Allison Mack (Chloe) are the only ones left from the first season, and the show is starting to rely on some former guest stars (Erica Durance and Justin Hartley, to name two) as former members of the main cast continue to leave.  But after last year’s awful season finale, can a younger Zod save the day?

The last of the networks has released its schedule for the 2009-2010 television season. Returning genre shows are Smallville and Supernatural. Smallville enters its ninth season, and the CW is guaranteeing there won’t be a tenth by moving it to the death slot, 8:00 p.m., Fridays. Supernatural remains in its Thursday 9:00 p.m. time slot.

What’s taking Smallville‘s old 8:00 p.m. Thursday slot? The new series, Twilight Vampire Diaries, which involves vampire brothers (one good, the other not so good, naturally) who vie for the soul of a girl and her friends and family.

Getting the axe completely is Reaper.

“Doomsday”
Originally Broadcast 5/14/08

Smallville, in its 8th season, has a new breath of life.  Lana and Lex are gone, ending the mindless love triangle that most people despised.  Clark has surrounded himself with Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and a mini Justice League to push him one step closer to Superman.  He’s left the small town behind, and he’s ready to become the hero he’s always been destined to be.

Well, based on this episode, maybe not so much.
