The CW Renews Smallville, Supernatural
February 24th, 2009
Both The Hollywood Reporter and TV Week are reporting that The CW has renewed six shows through the 2009-2010 season, including its Thursday duo of Smallville (for a ninth season) and Supernatural (for a fifth season). No word yet on the fate of Reaper, which returns for its second season on March 3rd.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that two of Smallville‘s current “showrunners,” Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin, may leave the series if The CW’s pilot for Melrose Place is picked up. Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson would remain to guide Smallville through its ninth season. The show’s creators, Al Gough and Miles Millar, left after Season Seven.
Do you think Smallville and Supernatural should each return for another season? Sound off in the comments.
Smallville – 8×14 – Requiem
February 10th, 2009
The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the current episode, “Requiem,” originally broadcast February 6th, 2009.
Well, what do you know? “Requiem” ended up being a fairly strong episode. For reasons that have nothing to do with Smallville, and everything to do with the name, “Requiem,” I wasn’t hopeful. Still, we seemingly wrapped up a few loose ends and managed take a few steps for our characters. Steps that shouldn’t, in theory, be retractable. Read the rest of this entry »

Smallville – 8×08 – “Bloodline”
November 12th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the episode, “Bloodline,” originally broadcast November 6th, 2008.
Hey, do you remember that girl that lived at the Kent farm for a while? Blond hair, tall, pretty, vapid expression? Wasn’t she supposed to be Clark’s cousin or something? Carla? Kari? Kara!?! Yeah, that was it, Kara. I haven’t seen her since last season. Don’t remember her? Don’t feel bad. No one in Smallville seems to have given her much thought, either. At least, not until now.
Smallville – 8×06 – “Prey”
October 31st, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the episode, “Prey,” originally broadcast October 23rd, 2008.
There’s a serial killer on the loose in Metropolis, and Chloe’s new friend Davis has been having blackouts? Coincidence? He’s in the clear as far as Chloe is concerned. At least for the moment.
Smallville – 8×05 – “Committed”
October 29th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the episode, “Committed,” originally broadcast October 16th, 2008.
Did you ever watch an episode of Fox’s “The Moment of Truth?” Yeah, me neither. From what I gathered through the promos, people allowed themselves to be hooked up to lie detectors and asked an assortment of potentially embarrassing questions, all for… what? Fabulous prizes? Who knows. I wasn’t willing to watch to find out. Well, someone in Metropolis decides to play the home game, only the contestants are playing for his/her life and the life of his/her fiancee.
Smallville – 8×04 – “Instinct”

Digging into DC Comics’ bag of Superman’s rouges gallery, Smallville brings Maxima to town. Actually, it’s Tess that inadvertently brings Maxima to Earth. In the process, a rift is created between Jimmy and Chloe, more hints at Clark and Lois’s growing feelings are exposed, and Tess gets her eyes opened about a couple of things. Smallville – 8×03 – “Toxic”
October 6th, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the current episode, “Toxic,” originally broadcast October 2nd, 2008.
Smallville continues its slow but steady crawl towards quality. In the process, though some structural questions arise about the past handling of the future Man of Steel, and whether it’s too late to really go anywhere with Clark. What does it say about a series when its main character is the only one that isn’t allowed to grow? Read the rest of this entry »
Smallville – 8×02 – “Plastique”
October 1st, 2008
The following review contains spoilers for Smallville through the current episode, “Plastique,” originally broadcast September 25th, 2008.
Okay, now that the players are in place, we can get going with the season, right? Somewhat. “Plastique” is a definite improvement over “Odyssey,” but there’s nothing here to suggests that the show is on track to regain its long lost form. We get somewhat of a return of the “freak of the week,” another new character (Davis Bloom) and Clark’s first day at the Daily Planet. Of the three, Davis turns out to be the more interesting storyline.
Smallville Season 8 Preview
September 18th, 2008
The following column will preview season 8 of Smallville. There will be spoilers inside, and if you don’t want to know anything about the upcoming season, I would suggest you stop reading immediately.
Is this finally going to be the season that our favorite farm boy becomes the man of steel he’s supposed to be? If you believe the spoilers, the hype, and the new producers, then that’s a big yes.
And for what might be the final season of the series, that shouldn’t exactly be big news. But it’s news to be excited about nonetheless.
