New episodes of Smallville and Supernatural return tonight on The CW at 8:00PM and 9:00PM ET, respectively, the first new episodes since February 5th. Be sure to check your local listings.

Both The Hollywood Reporter and TV Week are reporting that The CW has renewed six shows through the 2009-2010 season, including its Thursday duo of Smallville (for a ninth season) and Supernatural (for a fifth season). No word yet on the fate of Reaper, which returns for its second season on March 3rd.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that two of Smallville‘s current “showrunners,” Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin, may leave the series if The CW’s pilot for Melrose Place is picked up. Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson would remain to guide Smallville through its ninth season. The show’s creators, Al Gough and Miles Millar, left after Season Seven.

Do you think Smallville and Supernatural should each return for another season? Sound off in the comments.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Sex and Violence,” originally broadcast February 5th, 2009.

For an episode involving exotic dancers, a hot doctor and a twist I didn’t see coming, “Sex and Violence” was ultimately a disappointment due to a trite ending. Up until the final few minutes it was actually great episode with an intriguing Monster of the Week. I was even able to forget that it had almost nothing to do with the 66 Seals. There was a minor subplot involving Dean’s suspicions of Sam but it never went anywhere.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “After School Special,” originally broadcast January 29th, 2009.

I don’t often get the chance to watch Supernatural “live” as they say. It’s on against The Office and 30 Rock on NBC and those are two shows I hate to miss. But last night (Thursday, January 29th, 2009) both The Office and 30 Rock were repeats while Supernatural was new. So I got to watch Supernatural in its natural habitat (9:00PM Eastern).

I was having problems with my Internet connection so I also got to sit on the couch and concentrate all my attention on Supernatural rather than multitasking. Perhaps that’s why I found myself enjoying this episode so much. Because after having some time to think I realized that “After School Special” really wasn’t a great episode.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Criss Angel Is a Douche Bag,” originally broadcast January 22nd, 2009.

When I finished watching this episode I was left wondering what Criss Angel being a douche bag has to do with anything. I know who Criss Angel is and the word douche bag was certainly thrown around quite a bit in the episode, but I don’t get the connection between the two. Did Criss Angel do something to the author or authors of the episode? Did he somehow slight the producers of Supernatural? Or is the title of this episode a joke to be enjoyed by those in the know? I’m sure I could find the answer myself on the Internet, but where’s the fun in that?

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Family Remains,” originally broadcast January 15th, 2009.

After a nearly two-month hiatus, new episodes of Supernatural have returned. The last new episode was broadcast on November 20th, 2008 (“Heaven and Hell”). The Brothers Winchester have been busy with job after job, leading Sam to suggest that perhaps Dean is trying to throw himself into their work in order to forget about what he did in Hell (torturing other souls, for example). But Dean ignores him and finds them a haunting to investigate. Unfortunately, while they are checking out the haunted house — which is up for sale — a family arrives with a moving van. The haunted house just became inhabited.

New episodes of Smallville and Supernatural return tonight on The CW at 8PM and 9PM, respectively.  Smallville‘s “Legion” sees Clark meet the Legion of Superheroes, who’ve travelled back in time to help him combat a dire threat.  And on Supernatural‘s “Family Remains,” the Brothers Winchester have their hands full when a family moves into a house haunted by a ghost.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Heaven and Hell,” originally broadcast November 20th, 2008.

I don’t have all that much to say about this episode because, to be quite honest, I found it incredibly disappointing. Last week’s episode, the first half of this two-part story, introduced the character of Anna, a young woman who could eavesdrop on the conversation of angels. For understandable reasons, demons were anxious to get their hands on her. Sam and Dean, with help from Ruby, had their hands full trying to protect Anna. And then Castiel and Uriel showed up. Cue cliffhanger. Unfortunately, aside from the ending and a few select scenes, “Heaven and Hell” was an underwhelming follow-up to “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” originally broadcast November 13th, 2008.

This was an interesting episode that both continued the Sixty-Six Seals story line (last touched upon in “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester”) and, through flashbacks, attempted to fill in some of what happened to Sam during Dean’s time in Hell. Judging from the reaction I’ve observed among fans of Supernatural, what was depicted in the flashbacks wasn’t particularly welcomed. On the other hand, most viewers seemed to have enjoyed the “present” story line, which involved a guest role from actress Julie McNiven (who portrays Hildy, a secretary, on AMC’s delightful Mad Men).

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Wishful Thinking,” originally broadcast November 6th, 2008.

The teaser to this episode was brilliant. A beautiful woman is taking a shower, some creepy kid is leering at her, he disappears, she thinks she hears something, creepy kid gets a towel thrown over him, begs the woman not to tell his mom, woman screams. Not exactly what one would expect (the woman lived, after all) from Supernatural. And the episode only got better. The first few minutes after the opening credits were reminiscent of “Monster Movie,” with the Brothers Winchester hearing about strange happenings in Concrete, Washington and assuming nothing is really going on.
