The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester,” originally broadcast October 30th, 2008.

After two standalone episodes, one I found enjoyable but flawed (“Monster Movie”) and one I thought was excellent (“Yellow Fever”), Supernatural gets back to the latest End of the World storyline. In other words, Sam and Dean are back on the job of stopping the 66 seals from being broken, which would lead to Lucifer rising from Hell and bringing with him a host of nasty demons and other baddies. And it’s Halloween, to boot, so horrible things are sure to happen.

This was a tour de force episode for Jensen Ackles. From start to finish, this was his episode and he performed brilliantly. The monster of the week story was interesting but somewhat confusing.  I could have done without the tired television contrivance of starting an episode with a brief scene and then flashing back to tell the rest of the story. Although it was hilarious seeing that the horrific beast Dean was running from was a tiny dog, would it have changed the episode at all to simply start at the beginning? No, not at all. And in my book, if there’s no good reason to set an episode as a flashback, it shouldn’t be done.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Monster Movie,” originally broadcast October 16th, 2008.

Oh, how I wanted to love this episode. The entire time I was watching it, I was desperately trying to like it. And while I enjoyed aspects of the episode the end result never came together for me. Airing an entire episode in black and white is a novel idea (and one that USA Network’s Monk tried in December of 2006, although it also aired the episode in color). Black and white instantly adds a certain atmosphere to a television series, a mood, an ambience. For a show like Supernatural, steeped in horror tradition, it actually makes a great deal of sense to try shooting an entire episode in black and white. It was a noble effort, but one that ultimately failed (but was nevertheless an enjoyable way to spend an hour).

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Metamorphosis,” originally broadcast October 9th, 2008.

Apologies for the lateness of the review. There is so much on television every Thursday and so little time to watch it all, let alone review it.

Following the customary recap (which told the story of “In the Beginning” within the space of two minutes), the episode begins. Having been warned by Castiel that his brother is walking down a dark path, Dean comes across Sam and Ruby exorcising a demon. Sam can do it just by pointing his finger at the demon-possessed man. And, luckily for the man involved, it survives. When Dean learns that Ruby is the woman Sam has been spending time, he pulls a knife (Bela’s demon killing knife, perhaps) and lunges at her. Eventually, Sam has Ruby take the man to the E.R. with the man and Dean stalks off.

Well, this was an interesting episode, I’ll say that about it. While watching, I was completely engrossed. It was a solid hour of television with some shocking reveals and some hilarious moments. But when it ended, and I took a minute to think about what I had just seen, I found myself wondering whether I had actually learned anything of consequence. I have never been a fan of time travel episodes (regardless of the series) especially when nothing actually changes when the character(s) sent back in time return to the present.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester,” originally broadcast September 25th, 2008.

Following up on last week’s impressive season premiere “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester” explored some of the new storylines introduced in that episode. But only after what felt like an incredibly length recap (at ran 1:45). As someone who watches Supernatural on a weekly basis, I find these recaps a waste of time. And I doubt very much Supernatural is the sort of show that viewers occasionally tune in to. Thus, the recaps are also probably a bit pointless. And finally, as recaps are apt to do, by showing scenes with Meg it lessened the shock of seeing her ghost later in the episode. But enough about the recap.

The following review contains spoilers for Supernatural through the current episode, “Lazarus Rising,” originally broadcast September 18th, 2008.

Confession time: I started watching Supernatural on a whim. The evening it premiered, for whatever reason, there was nothing I really wanted to watch on television, so I tuned into The WB and watched Supernatural. It was enjoyable enough but not something I would call “Must See TV.” Still, thanks to repeats shown throughout 2005 and 2006, I managed to catch all but one episode of the first season (“Bugs”). The banter between Sam and Dean was what kept me coming back week after week, not the demon of the week.
